Cutoff wheel recommendation

Hey guys its time to buy some 4.5" cutoff wheels in bulk again. I've been using these for general steel with good results but was wondering if anyone has a better recommendation since there are lots of guys here do way more metal work then me. Thanks!

Thanks guys. Never tried the Walters but have tried the Pferd and liked them. Hum, maybe I'll have to swing by a couple places tomorrow and see if I can't get a couple of each and see what's what.

Pferd may be good, I have used Norton, SAI, 3M, Diablo and Forney and the only two that have come apart on me are the 3M and Forney.... I was surprised the 3M came apart, but not really surprised the Forney did. Always wear a full face shield!

I have a list going of what I have cut with 1 so far you can add to that the heads of 8 Ford truck bed mounting bolts, and then cutting 5 of the bolts again so they would drop through the holes in the frame.

The damn thing is still going strong.

Does Walter actually make them?

They rebadge Metabo grinders, it wouldn't be a stretch to think they rebadge their abrasives as well.

Norton Blue fire is the best I have used, Walter are good as well. Thin as possible is the way to go.

Im a welder/fabricator and do quite a bit of cutting.some air some plasma etc.i usually buy norton discs or the brand p f e r d.quality is comparible between the two.but last year a local welding/construction company went for sale,the owner retired and he had a seperated machinery,tool,inventory auction. I bought anything welding related.with the inventory was probably 100-150 lbs 4 1/2 cut off discs made by falcon abrasives and made in usa! Several styles the ones i use are blue talons and X p.these discs cut thru material like butter.they last longer,very easy to cut strait and they dont fly apart.i looked the company up and it seems you have to locate a distributor near you to get prices.i haven't done that yet.the prices may scare me or may be worth it judging by the performance.

Sait, Lenox, and Norton, are my go to's but I bought a lot off of CL a while back with 100+ Sait and dewalt discs of dif varieties... so far so good...

Thanks again for the suggestions guys. And ya I'll be buying from Lehigh more then likely as I always have in the past.

Thought I'd point an observation out about the saits and maybe this might make a difference on the suggestions. I noticed if I maintain the cut shallow on the blade and "scrape" my way through the cut they last a good long time. But anytime I'm forced to go deep on the blade, as in let's say 60-90 degrees to the metal it eats up the blade 5x's faster for some strange reason. Normally if I'm on the bench this is never a problem. But right now I'm doing a mini tub and having to drop in pretty deep to catch all the layers of metal which has the cut relationship all over the board which I have no control over. I know in the past I've had some wheels that didn't suffer from this issue but have no idea whose they were, it was just a random selection I got at the welding supply place. And I hate just walking in there to buy them one or two at a whack since they're 3x's what I can buy them for from Lehigh by the box.

And nice write up on the blade thumper, but I prefer they have a hub (whatever that offset is called) so I can flush cut.

Norton blue. I've used quite a bit of different discs over the past 35 years. Sometimes even harbor freight just cause their so cheap. But nothing compares to the quality of Norton. Same goes for their Da paper, long board, air grinder, everything. Great product.

Well by cracky I'm going to try out all these plus get some damn Walters and Pferd and this time I'm going to keep track of what I like the best. So thanks for the input guys.

I got some off eBay, 5" in my case, I can't remember the acronym but it's something-USA, and surprisingly enough they're actually made in the USA. They last pretty dang long for the instances I hit it with an electric grinder vs the typical pneumatic one (which is use 3M wheels on).

I e-mailed Lenox and suggested they make a cupped center wheel, because you are right the cupped center does make some cuts easier.

They have cut off wheel, flap discs etc.

All cut off wheels wear away so I have trouble spending extra for a name brand.
On a similar but different note, I went through many brands of flap wheels trying to find the best option. In the end, I concluded, rather than pay three times as much for a flap wheel that didn't last 3 times as long, I just buy 3 of the cheap discs and move on. In some cases, having a new disc more often reduced the effort I had use.

i use metabo super slicers, they ARE the cats meow.
picked up a box of de walt cutting discs, used enough to get thru that days job, and threw the remainder away

Nothing much better then grenading a blade every now and then to keep you on your toes.

like a clear shield over the disc/wheel?
probably because it would scratch easily and be useless in a short time

A full face shield is proper PPE, how is this very different than a welders face shield?
