Hello Alloooooooooo.. Anyone here?

Yes, that is the sound of my neighbors when they go inside the house because I tell them that every month, next month will be done.

Those of you that still remember me, will know that I said that this was going to be quick and easy. Little I knew version 4.0 already.

Now I know why Doug is taking so long and I don't blame him one bit.

I posted a render of the new look of the house, that was pre-authorized by HOA.

Of course HOA turned into HOEs and denied it later. I almost lost my sanity there, but I will have my revenge.

----

That is one thing, the other thing is the moneeeeeeeeeeeeeyyyyyyyyzzzzzzzz.

Of course this world runs on money, how else would my national coin would devaluate so much because the greeks voted no?.. Car parts just went 30% more expensive for me, thank you globalization.

I had a budget of many many many little coins, then that budget went into what you already saw me build.

Now my budget is of a very few little coins. I should be fine right? house is almost done.

Since I have been super busy at work and super stressed with the people I had working for me. You know, the kind of people you explain how you want something and they say they understood and 5 minutes after you left they call you and ask you the meaning of the universe.

Yep it burned me, so I called one of the guys that went to see the house, professional contractors.

He made me a new quote to finish the house.

The quote was, savage, brutal, and very realistic.... And it was for as many coins as my initial whole house budget.

I won't bother you with the story of how my soul left my body for a few weeks.

------------

Here I stand.

I changed the first floor porcelain for some cardboard and plastic, very protective now that I have a daughter that is ready to walk anytime now. ( Yes the same daughter that should have been born in this house ).

D13.0548s.jpg

Then I agreed to pull off all the plaster roof.

D13.0545s.jpg

D13.0544s.jpg

No, I'm not kidding, all of it... Here is proof that time has passed.

D13.0546s.jpg

AHA! That myth that plants don't die if you don't water them for 6 months resulted to be real. BUSTED!

You saw me do the kitchen ceiling 3 times, but that time was because design was lacking, this time tho, it was because I made a huge mistake.

Mistake was trying to be a smart ***, that is why people specialize in doing certain jobs, because they know how to do them!.

Well of course I'm not an electrician nor do I knew the fact that poliduct is made with certain amount of chloride that in event of a fire will kill anyone that breaths the fumes. HA... HA...

So we are changing the whole over ceiling electric circuits just to be safe.

D13.0552s.jpg

D13.0553s.jpg

This time, assisted by a real electrician, we are using PVC conduit.

I took the time to hire some artists to decor the walls.

This quality graffiti is by Geovanny C. , his view on how the half bathroom should have been done.

D13.0549s.jpg

And this one is by a talented team of designers, its called Executive Project.

D13.0550s.jpg

They don't even know how I made it so far without it. Now that I know what it is, I don't even know myself.

They also suggested to open some roof for natural light instead of having nasty windows that will give ample entrance to bugs and water.

D13.0554s.jpg

D13.0555s.jpg

Should be awesome, specially the main bathroom one, honestly after looking at how much light it has now, makes me wonder how much of a caveman I was when I asked not to put any windows there the first time.

And lastly, instead of hiring a well known landscaper I left nature do her thing, by 2020 my garden will be the last oxygen source of the planet.

D13.0556s.jpg

I love you guys, didn't miss you because I still visited but I'm back, love me back!

Thanks for the update.

Hang in there!!

Looks like you have a good path forward, and in a few years you can look back and be satisfied that you made good choices, even if it took you an iteration or two.

I started working on my 1972 Corvette in 1983 (give or take a few years) and I'm still working on the same car. I'm re-doing everything for the second or third time. Doing all the work myself, even when I have no idea how to do it has cost me a small fortune. On the bright side the car hasn't been stolen or wrecked in almost 40 years of ownership. I expect to total it backing out of the driveway in a few years. Then I can have a professional fix it and tell me about all the horrible things wrong with the car.

I have grandchildren graduating from college who were born a decade after I started working on the car. Patience is a good thing ... up to a point.

I like your crisp pictures :)
Clever, very clever.

Thanks for the update.

Hang in there!!

The problem is that this hampers my plan to buy an island on the Caribbean.

Love you too. And i still believe the house will someday be amazing.
the amazing would be actually finishing it haha.

I expect to total it backing out of the driveway in a few years.

Patience is a good thing ... up to a point.

Call me up when you are backing it out, I will bring some cognac and laugh with you in desperation.

You are scaring me. Will that happen to me too??
It happens to all of us, its a disease, its called tinkering without being hefty rich.

I sold the Camaro, the Cheyenne and bought my own "will crash it on the driveway project".. That kept my sanity this passing months.

You replied while I was posting.

The thing with poliduct is that it can be installed under something, but will kill you on open air installs, and even worse with fan & coil units because they accelerate the process or something like that.

All the house had false ceilings, so everything came down.

HOEs are claiming that I have an excess of construction, which this extra flying box will even add more.

ONE: I have an excess of construction, yes. By an amount permissible by the local gov.

TWO: Flying **** that you can't actually LIVE on, does not count as construction.

Soooo.. HOEs will be HOEs...

I'm slowly getting over it, once I live there and see the beautiful human being I am they will regret not being nice to me. haha

I love you and this thread. I want to reach out and give you a hug. You are not unique in renovating new construction. I have gone through a similar emotional roller coaster. I had a luxury that you don't. My house was built with wood and I went through the phase of just wanting to burn the summa *****. It does work out in the end. It's worth it.

Oh believe me, if I had enough money I would tear this house down with my own hands, moving the controls of a big machine of course.

Get it done before the TPP goes through. bammy will make sure your money value will drop even more.

I don't think that will hamper my dreams as bad as my people buying lots of dollars but who knows.

Keep the faith!

My parents were both architects who did ultra modern construction, and I can tell you it's all in the details. I watched them put up many ultra modern homes. When you design a conventional house, all of the architectural and engineering details are standard; and known to virtually any builder. When you design something unique and crazy, the smallest details can be extremely frustrating. For example, keeping water from intruding on a flat roof, and controlling water flow off the roof in a way that satisfies a zoning ordinance that requires gutters..when you want no gutters. It takes creativity from the design/engineering standpoint, AND the right contractor that can pull it off. I know my parents broke new ground in many ways on each house in terms of architectural and engineering details to create a certain look. When you want an element that's never been done, it's never easy. Sometimes the materials did not even exist to do a particular job, and they had major manufacturers make new products to solve an engineering problem. Or using a certain product in a way that it was never intended. It helps to have a client with a fat checkbook.

That is very true, I had to pay to remove things they made in the "usual way" because that was the "right way" and I was crazy.

Arguing that this house was like nothing else they built before was just pointless, they just didn't want to work with the quality I was asking.

There is NO DOUBT that I indeed saved a lot of money keeping up with that team but in the end there were a few things that were mistakenly done because we did it old style, like the poliduct and other little bits that will be redone.

My wallet went from ultrawide to ultradeep and not because I have big bucks now, because I have to dig to the bottom of it for pennies hahaha.

Thank you all for the encouragement words and as uknown said, if our problems are with money, then we don't have real problems... such deepness.

LCG,
I first started reading your thread shortly after you started this project and lost track. I just went over it start to finish and wow you are amazing with everything you touch it seems. I'll be tagging along to see this one to the end. It ***** there is so much that will have to be redone but at the same time at least you know it will be done correctly and to your standards and you'll get what you want.

Now tell/show us this car you plan to crash backing out of your drive the first time please.

I know the feeling, Bob. 1966 Chevelle, 1971, back in the garage for the 5th time( for almost 20 years).

Best wishes on getting the home done the way you want, as soon as you can. Still enjoyable in spite of the heartache you've been through.

LCG,
I read over your car build thread and it was hilarious and scary! For those of you wanting a good laugh, or to see some interesting repairs/upgrades check it out. I'd like to see where you take this car now that you have it stripped and ready to actually build. I wish you the best of luck on the house and the car.

I'm afraid that the build part won't be as interesting for people and the thread will loose its current market value, I have been thinking of selling the stocks now.

My broker should be contacting you very soon. He's prefers to invest my money in things that are on the way down. On the other hand, if you and I could find a few more unique vehicles, maybe the Lords of the Car Hoards TV show will contact us and fix up our treasured (soul sucking?) rides. Oh, and thank you Dr. F.'s metal cutting tips. I have a banana tree with nearly ripe fruit. Just need to find a cheap goat and I'm good to go. I'm hoping goats like fiberglass as much as metal -- I'll just double the thickness of the banana markings.

If you have that kind of broker tell him he can invest in my house.

Never seen that show before but it must be some kind of overhaulin for depressed driveway totalers?

People please, don't get on the run to buy bananas and goats just yet, the legend says that Dr. F's goat had teeth with carbide inserts so hold your ******* and get a proper goat the first time.

Doubling the banana coating seems like a good idea to better lubricate the cut and keep the goat cool.

she needs a better imagination! Natalie loves waking up to the natural wood about the bed...

I won't bother... more moneyz for the garage

I don't have any substantial in terms of new impressive and dangerous materials but more of a iFixit and iRemodelbeforeevenlivingin Update.

First, I went on a small flash vacation of 5 days, the kitchen sink was leaking a drop every minute, so in an effort to not waste any water while we were not there I closed the supply valves.

GREAT IDEA LUIS, YOU ARE SO SMART AND ECOLOGICAL!

we get back and as I open the door house a big puddle was waiting for us. My best guess is the valve when closed could not handle the pressure and leaked even more than the sink.

But why you care? well you don't obviously but a lot of the boxes of stuff I have for the new house drank a lot of the water.

I lifted the box of the oven and it came off from the base as easy as 1 2 3.
Next time you want to open a brand new fridge or anything heavy on a box just wet the damn thing. It should be in the manual.

D13.0557s.jpg

I also had the only circular sink ( and most expensive ) on one of those boxes, that box was empty, it gathered so many water that it collapsed, and this happened.

D13.0558s.jpg

Sigh, as laughable as totaling a car on the driveway after that oil change that took 10 years.

Now onto remodeling.

This is December 5 - 2014

D13.0481s.jpg

This is December 24 - 2014

D13.0511s.jpg

And this is July 28 - 2015

D13.0559s.jpg

Hilarious!

The half bathroom that you will all use if you come to visit got the outside wall removed in case I need to watch you over.

D13.0560s.jpg

Naahh It will have a new detail on it, but I will still watch you!

Completely removed the green wall.

D13.0561s.jpg

Most likely it will come back after some treatment to the actual wall to keep humidity out, don't want neighbor problems in the future as the houses will be back to back.

And now the iFixit stuff...

Electrics are on going, all the ceilings are on PVC conduit and all exposed polyduct will be switched to PVC too.

D13.0563s.jpg

Spiderman was here

D13.0564s.jpg

D13.0566s.jpg

And now the cherry!

Remember this?

D13.0502s.jpg

Of course you don't. It was a fixture to install the valves for the showers, should keep the valves aligned and centered to install the vanity plates that will hold the knobs.

Well it didn't work as valves were all crooked and looked like *******, they never point the same direction.

D13.0569s.jpg

took the BFH out and went town, there is a specific joy when you know it hurts your wallet but still you hate in enough to not care and care at the same time... I am a complicated human being.

This is fixture version 2.0

D13.0567s.jpg

D13.0568s.jpg

This time there is a nut and a counter nut on precise cut and aligned holes, mind you this is the first attempt at the new fixture, the final version will be unobtanium.

I can see the light now, from all the holes the renovation has done.

The super thing is now that I don't have ceilings I will add Fan & Coil units instead of minisplits. How COOL is that?... ahew ahew

A quote my wife likes: "If you can fix your problem with money, you don't really have a problem."

I usually take comfort from that quote but Luis, I think you really have a problem. I would have turned the house into a barn full of concrete-eating goats and just.walked away. Then again, I replaced a number of supporting walls in my house when termites turned them into distressed lumber artwork.

Have you given any thought to buying half of the lot next door? I'm not usually superstitious but maybe if your house number was D Doce Punto Cinco instead of D Trece you'd have fewer problems.

A quote I like: "So I smiled and things got worse!"

Jeezzzuuzzzzz Craaaaiiiiizzzt. I almost wipe a tear because I imagined all in detail of myself doing the 12.5 thing.

I would change your quote to.. "So I smiled as things got worse"

//Update

So what happens in a month at the haunted house?

A lot that can not be measured because you cant actually tell the difference from what it was before.

Yet, I wont let this thread turn into one of those builds that the OP stops posting and then 2 eternities later he resurrects and posts already finished pictures without even updating the links to their already dead first pictures. Yes I'm talking about you Jordon *kiss.

So, to keep the thread alive I will cover not really interesting for anyone topics, more like this and that has been done and sharing more "don't do this" stuff.

I start with a DON'T DO THIS, yes with caps, I am internet screaming.

D13.0570s.jpg

Please for the love of God, do not install granite on your facade, it will look awful no mater how cool you might think it will look when you see it at the store. And if you insist on doing the atrocity please make sure they seal the damn thing before grouting.

I will eventually half cover that mistake, still thinking how and with what.

Next;

We extended the half bathroom on the first floor so when you come to visit me you won't see anyone coming out of the bathroom, instead they will be able to scare the **** out of you when you pass by and they grab your eyes with their wet hands while asking retardedly who am I?

D13.0571s.jpg

Next;

Green wall, or better known as the Grey wall now got sealed perfectly and will eventually grow green again, just not anytime soon because my budget for pretty flowers went to -$856,145.74.

D13.0572s.jpg

I have been thinking of printing a 1 to 1 vinyl of some prettier green walls and just don't let anyone get near it.

Next;

AC ducts are done and F&C units will be installed later if they prove to be needed.

D13.0573s.jpg

There are many more ducts but since most of you already know how they look I guessed one was already too much.

Next;

Last time on valve jigs, things went very wrong, so this time, instead of making a removable jig I made dispensable jigs.

D13.0574s.jpg

One for each shower and they will live there they whole life till they rot and start dripping oxide residue on the walls

Next;

Ceiling design changed much, so this time plaster will only be used for details and the rest will be sheetrock.

D13.0575s.jpg

New ceilings and new electric runs EATED.. no.. DEVOURED the rest of the budget.

Next and final;

The contractor has a wood guy, he sent me the quote for "whole house carpentry" I kid you not. 150,000usd. Yep that is no sarcasm.

Obviously after I collected my broken jaw from the floor I asked them to make me a sample of their "Godly" work.

So they made a "step" for the main staircase. Took it to my trusty small shop carpenter and he made me another "step".

D13.0576s.jpg

The lower one is a trillion dollars, the upper one was 40. yes. FOURTY.

Small shop takes the win in ALL aspects, finish quality, edges, wood cutting and assembling.

I don't dance, I don't have the self esteem to do It, but of course when contractor said, -You Win- I danced like a swan while middle ********* him.

yeah, we get along.

Wow, this is so awesome! Entire thread is awesome! Detail is awesome, house is awesome!!!

If you don't mind me asking what does something like this cost? Or a rough estimate of how much it is going to cost? I've always wondered what a modern house with details like this would run, and obviously it's going to be different areas in the country...etc.

Thanks,
-Nigel

LCG, I think the cost is best expressed in Mexican Pesos. Using the US dollar cost would only make it outrageous. I mean, the whole house carpentry estimate wasn't $150,000 -- it was really $2,512,500. The single bargain step was done for only $670.40. And your flower budget isn't -$856,145.74, it's -$14,349,002.00.

Just so you don't feel more horrible, this house in Connecticut is selling for $14 million (just Google $14 Million modern house):
14M%20House%202_zpsa3l7ivhy.jpg

OK, that might be a misleading picture. Most of the mildew-covered house is on the lower level:

I don't know how to feel about that Bob, but you are insanely right.

After seeing your impressive math skills I reversed them and found a catastrophic mistake that doesn't help.

By the time I had that quote in my hand it was 150,000. at instant exchange rate yesterday it is a mere 90,000. Yep, that is how much my gov is taking care of us in the span of 3 months.

So yes. I may even go back to the first post and start changing all my usd comments to mxp units so they stay real at current exchange of the reader.

And I think I have called this before or if someone asked me by PMs but here it is.

- A house like this should be in the $18,000mxp per sqm on construction alone.

That price goes up and down depending on finishing details and if you want solid gold toilets. Also if the neighborhood looks like you will get shot as soon as you go out, that tends to drop the price too.

None the less I am happy. As the contractor says, I have hair, nothing else should matter.

You're a funny guy! Thanks for living and sharing :).

Glad you get my sense of humor

On the garage I built a wall to keep the Commifornians out of my polluted space.

But after receiving a call from Reagan asking me to tear down this wall, giving it second thought and still using budget for nonsense I made the order.

Don´t mind the particularly good looking board cage, contractor is using that space to store tools and other valuable assets.

I intended this place to be an "extra-room" for the whole house, for extra large visiting or 24/7 maid and what not. But I am a space greedy ***** and I wanted a larger Fabrication space. If some day I need that extra room drywall will solve that.

Half of the rest of my budget arrived, I just hope it delivers. Every time my wife convinces me to go to a mall or something I enter stores, look up at the ceilings and cringe at all crooked, swagging, showing all the cuts drywall. It just bothers me.

If the ceilings end up crooked here I'm positive I will get eye cancer or a stress aneurysm.

On the bathrooms I was going to deck the floors, that is why I used the black tiling but contractor convinced me that pipi and popo don't go well with decking so I went for some textured granite and raised showers.

I really wanted the deck feeling on bare feet but common sense won this one, just this one.

Structures for bathroom commodities are done and placed.

That will be a sight that we will get used to as there will be no budget left to actually make the wood for them

I NEED to live on this house ASAP, deadline is December.

So most likely house will be 3/4 finished, carpentry will be done while we live there and I will personally finish that 1/4 left myself to save some pennies... sorry Bob I meant pesos.

No, I don't shoot for ducati and I don't have an army of festool tools so don't expect miracles
