Great thread, you may have mentioned somewhere in the post but can you give an approximate dollar amount for this construction/project built there in Guadalajara, Mexico? I know that here or anywhere would be a huge amount and am very curious about how much better, if any, it was Meixco. Be cool, freezer'

Every time someone asks that question I run some numbers and then the house eats another car

So no idea till I finish for real. Which will never happen anyway.

Greetings to all! I stumbled upon this site and had to join.Although I'm not building a new garage,I have to totally gut mine since my son decided to let his truck catch fire recently. The truck was a total loss. Burned to a crisp but by the grace of God it's the only thing that was destroyed.Miracles do happen. The bad part is everything is covered with a sticky soot. Even the things in drawers. Garage is two bays plus a workshop. Lift still works and compressor survived even though they were right next to truck. Very strange. Very depressing every time I go in there. Gotta toss all cabinets,Vacs, parts bins etc. will have to replace all the ductwork from the furnace. Would like to save the metal tool cabinets but not sure how to remove the soot since its on the inside as well as the outside. Haven't opened up the welders yet but i'm sure everything inside is covered with soot as well. Be warned...Don't let your son ever work in your garage or this might happen to you. Might take some pics and post them so you all can see this mess.

Greetings, I too have found this thread and many others remarkable. Would def like to see you post your restore. I too am rebuilding an old block building (used to be an old jail) into a garage and am interested in starting a thread dedicated to it. Thanks

Yet at the very least I will enjoy the fact that there will be no ridiculous amount of non used plug sockets here.

Counter tops are brutally perforated by diamond hole saws, creating a lot of pixie dust ready to turn your boogers black.

D13.0662s.jpg

Those empty hole will be filled with thick sticks.

D13.0663s.jpg

This sticks go up and down as needed and contrary to popular belief they do not offer any pleasure to the granite.

What kind of outlets are those?

Stationary update time!

At the rate we were going I was asking for miracles not to happen but it finally did. Wallet went 0. I have some money left that I won't touch (emergency only)...

So with 0 money to continue this will be finished on monthly payments haha. I'm not even mad, today I took my wife and little daughter to the house and both of them were so happy that I just don't care about money anymore.

Fireless place is done and stoned, my daughter already grabbed some rocks and threw them around. Bound to happen.

D13.0669s.jpg

Kitchen is done, the glass pieces were the only thing left but they could not pull it one piece around the ovens, it kept braking.

D13.0672s.jpg

Sinks are glued to the tops now, I made a quick mockup with the unfinished knobs.

D13.0674s.jpg

Also placed the mockup pieces to a shower, they are super heavy, I hope the valves can take the extra weight.

D13.0673s.jpg

I think contractor missed the memo on the position of the tub haha. Not inside the shower?

D13.0675s.jpg

Front door "lock" is done.

Door side/plate

D13.0676s.jpg

Wall side/magnet

D13.0677s.jpg

And finally... Don't even ask because I don't even know what is going on here... This happened on the course of the week and no one called me or told me there was a "problem" with the garage door.

D13.0678s.jpg

As I said before, I'm not even mad. It cracked me up.

You would think after all this time the contractor would have a feel for your sense of style and finish quality, and know to call you about that garage door mechanism

How will that be fixed? Can it be hidden behind a panel to keep the clean exterior look?

Wow. That door made me laugh out loud. That's so Okie-rigged, I wouldn't even do that on one of my crappy old fallen-down barns. If you don't already know, the equivalent of Okie in Espanol is "paisa" I think :)

Instead of starting early stopped in @ Garage Journal main page. Spotted this thread for the first time.

Now its nearly time for lunch as read through this entire thread!

F A N T A S T I C Read. Enjoyed it all!

Now I have started to read the Stance Works thread.

Maybe, Just Maybe I will get to my projects some time after lunch!

LCG - you are my first post on GJ and I've read this, your Porsche and BMW posts - jeez, I thought I had some bad luck...! :lol_hitti

I admire your enthusiasm and wit - your really funny and have quite the fan base all over the world..! Well done and keep up the good work! No doubt you probably have a few more battle scars but majority 'seems' to be coming together with house / bmw.. It's been a really enjoyable read and I've lost hours reading it all!

Well done and keep it up! :rocker:

Two sets of torsion springs and a Rube Goldberg chain drive between them? No way that could poossibly go wrong in some YouTube worthy fashion.

Seriously, as I've said before this place is spectacular and your attention to detail is beyond even my OCD....but that garage door opening system looks kind of scary to me.

I have been following your ecoboost project since the beginning.. did you do anything today?

Amazing as usual!

Amazing house, congrats!

Thank you both

Well done and keep it up! :rocker:

Glad you found joy in the text, I have that thing going, makes me happy when people get a kick out of something.

The neighbor is waiting. Patiently. Quietly. Waiting.

Judging by his acts I guess he already shot himself by accident. So no worries!

Haha, I don't plan to submit fail videos any time soon.

I called the door guy today, he says the door is just too heavy for a torsion system. I will have to remove the glass and install acrylic or polycarbonate.

I would change the whole door for something different but at this point of no money I just have to chase the end. I most likely will have to replace the whole thing for another "idea" sooner than later.

On a serious note those final details going in are solid, you must be seeing the light at the end of the tunnel at this point. Stay strong, it looks great!

The more you fight with this door the more I'm reminded of someone with the idea to have it raise and lower out of and into the ground. :)

I keep reading threads like yours! So not much done yesterday. Spent hours just reading your thread. Today in the shop early hoping to get something done but G-J got me hooked. A couple hours so far just reading. I really need to get going . .

Your story sounds so familiar to me. If I posted a pic of everything I needed to sell it would fill many pages . .:lol_hitti I keep selling but then keep adding larger projects. Now nothing left to sell, no $$ to continue . .

I put a ad on CraigsList offering to dig ditch, bury a Prius, sell dirt. Split the $$. So far no takers.

you just laugh at my pain, you break my heart

Hey LCG , my wife wants to know if the guy that installed the garage door is still alive :)

Come on, my neighbor is still alive, this guy is pretty ok

forget about that, it would be easier to have a gigantic "floor" ramp that just levels with the house. Next time on way better ideas than tandem springs...

haha mocking on the prius while swapping a ecoboost, you need better credentials. Takers may think you are some kind of closet environmentalist just looking to bury them.

Maybe you can turn that garage door mechanism into a steampunk style "feature". Several big wooden and copper gears, some big heavy chains, and a massive "clunk-clink, clunk-clink, clunk-clink," sound when it opens and closes!

Like the super gigantic door that was featured on the homepage some time ago.. Or like a timed killing mechanism out of a SAW movie?

A drawbridge style garage door would be awesome.

I know!!! next time I will build a Castle.

***********************

Past month was very frustrating as I took the "**** it, I will fix it when I live here" stance. "FIIWFILH"

It is pretty obvious that I can't control myself. Over the time the contractor carried over my big mess we developed a good friendly relationship. The kind of friend that you can go very dark humor without hurting any feelings.

Said that...

This thing was done a while ago.

D13.0652s.jpg

There was some miscommunication and this thing was done horribly wrong. It looks ok but it is not how I told them, leaving some bigger than expected gaps on the doors. *sigh*

Well, just as if we were married. I pointed out a lot of the stuff that I was not fully satisfied with and he told me I was being too picky. "FIIWFILH"

Then we got in an argument about tiling in the kitchen, I placed an idea on the table and he just said that it was gross. That got me ignited.

I guess that makes me the woman in the relationship because I just went all over the house pointing every single problem that existed and that wood wall was a traumatic experience for him. I never rant around screaming like a bleeding teen as I don't have the self confidence to be hated for being a *****.

I could see his eyes wandering in disbelief of what was happening.

So no more "FIIWFILH" and he tells me that they will fix everything I pointed out.

D13.0679s.jpg

They are fixing it now, a new door for the most right side and some detail lacquer on the rest of it.

I'm not proud of myself for acting like a reality tv mom but when you are paying you deserve to get what you are paying?

Needless to say, our friendship took a big hit, things were different, my 7th sense could tell me that he was just full of regret of taking the house

Yesterday was his birthday so I made him a present.

geocumple.jpg

I think we will be friends again.

Good morning. Well this is interesting. I was an overhead door installer for a number of years and spent a lot of time repairing and troubleshooting. In this situation I believe what your trying to do is possible but is definitely out of the box. One of the things that I see that will not work is the cable drums. When the door is raised and at the top the springs have to hold it up and the door will be the same weight through out its travel. On an overhead door and also rollup doors the weight the springs have to overcome is decreasing as the tension is decreasing therefor the door is balanced throughout its travel. This is where the cable drums come in. Since you are lifting a constant weight, the drums will have to provide enough leverage to balance the door as the springs loose tension. Not sure if this is making sense but I believe this is how it will work and not sure if there is anything off the self that will work. What it would look like is a cone shape with the big end toward the spring, just the opposite of what is up there. Once the drums are figured out, the springs should be easy to match.

I was about to tell you that we had the correct drums, then I looked at the picture again.

This fucktard changed my conical drums (vertical lift ) to hybrid drums ( high lift )...

I am so pissed now, if that is the problem I will ******** him with the acrylic he made me buy.

Thank you.

Just wanted to clear up some things in my previous post. It has been 15 years since I was in that business so I had forgotten how the vertical lift doors worked. The drums are installed the same as those that are on there and as I have found out, door parts are easy to get now with the internet. Some things you should do with this heavy and type of door. The shaft should be a solid shaft, split in the middle with couplings in the middle, which it looks like it is. Everything should be keyed to the shaft especially the drums as they will slip over time if not.

It is clear and you are right.

Your post made me realize they installed the wrong drums, even when I personally handed them the correct ones. ( I bought them long before ).

I totally overlooked it till you mentioned it, so Thank you.

While following this for the last three years or so I never felt the need to comment, despite the witty repartee and grand project.

Today however, the birthday gift for your contractor, perfect!!

Best wishes and I feel the unfortunate reality is the 'squeaky wheel' does in fact get the grease.

Haha, almost 3 years and that was the thing that made you comment?

Thanks for the good wishes and while the squeaky wheel gets the grease, at least it gets it, then goes smooth...

***********

Upper wood wall got repaired, one door instead of 2 for better access to the water tap. While they were doing that I asked for a protruding extension of the wall to finish better on the side wall.

D13.0683s.jpg

It gives a place for the baseboard to end properly and should look great once the wallpaper goes on.

Here is a closer look.

D13.0682s.jpg

Looking at how baseboard was being done I asked for some changes, one of them was to keep it running on the flat doors.

D13.0684s.jpg

If this works out as I imagine (hardly anything goes like that) the doors could disguise a bit more once the wallpaper goes on. (yes I said that twice now).

D13.0680s.jpg

A lot of detailing still to do on the baseboard and walls so don't judge too hard... yet.

And lastly. This was my vision for the top wall, yet looking at it now I'm not sure my imagination can coupe up with reality and the ability of the people working on the house.

D13.0681s.jpg

It still needs a bunch of work to fit properly but I imagined an invisible door. Not a lego door. .. I would raise hell but my wife saw it and said "looks so cool" meh.. I can live with that.

Upper garage is getting tiled but I could not get a picture because I did not want to step on it. I bought 40x60cm ceramic tiles with faux marble print. While I am ashamed to say that particular sentence, it looks very nice

faux? what does that mean in the great scheme of things? I absolutely love your detail, but it would drive me crazy telling the builder how to do it. do you ever sleep or just lay awake dreaming this stuff up? your place is awesome upper garage?
