faux? what does that mean in the great scheme of things? I absolutely love your detail, but it would drive me crazy telling the builder how to do it. do you ever sleep or just lay awake dreaming this stuff up? your place is awesome upper garage?

jim

What detail did you like Jim?

And I do lose sleep because of many things. But most likely I will wake up at 4am and think about the origin of the universe till its too late (or early?) to sleep again.

Upper garage: extra garage space not intended for cars separated by a couple of steps from the general car area. Yet integral part of the garage as possible use of "man cave" space, in my case, wife/daughter area so they can hang while I work on the cars trying to maintain a conversation of her sisters fighting over who washes the dishes on their parents house.

Faux = imitation ... for cheapos like me!

Look at the positive of using genuine, authentic porcelain tile. It isn't as soft as marble. It isn't as susceptible to stains as marble. It doesn't require the ongoing maintenance as marble. I'd say for your garage, it is a superior product.

I'm not usually a modern home lover, but your interpretation is modern and yet still warm. I've followed this build since you started posting and while I am excited to see you get done, I will be sad to see it end. Of course, then we get to see your trials and tribulations of finishing the garage. By my estimate, we have 3-4 months left on the house and another 2.5 years work on the garage. :lol_hitti

I believe you're slightly mad. We're undergoing a bathroom reno at the moment for which we picked out items and I did the sourcing and purchasing, and just that is enough to wear me out. An entire house...no f'ing way.

Cool as hell though!

I really hope your house estimate is wrong but you must be right on the garage one

The ability to have options is what wears the brain.

Wall paper? Uh? I guess to distract from the garage door opener. Lol. Always appreciate your updates.

This is to distract the casual visitor, the people who reads this thread already know all my dirty secrets

I like LGC's house way better.

One thing is cheating on me but telling everyone about it? really?

**********

Today I won a fight.

Previous posts I mentioned fighting over the phone with the garage door guy.

They told me they could not balance it because it was too heavy / it was a safety concern bla bla bla. They said the door was 350kg/770lb+

Today we meet at the house and I brought a scale with me.

They removed the tension and voila! 190kg/418lb.

I almost dance while middle ********* them but I kept control of myself.

I have been ultra busy at work and have not been able to dedicate the time to make a proper update with pictures and silly text.

The pictures I have are very much outdated so give me a couple of days to take new pictures and think some new silly text.

Its been so long that I don't even know where to start.

Since the garage door Frankenstein got so much attention...

And I just realized I did not take a picture of the garage door final mechanism. That update will have to wait.

Duh..

All time lapsed from last update to today has been just finishing details so I'm afraid there is not much more NEW stuff to show you but more like IN DETAIL stuff.

//starts

Remember that passive aggressive bathroom "tiling"?

ITS BAAAAAACK!

D13.0692s.jpg

Yes it resurrected on the back of the house, beats the **** out of a blinding white wall.

There was a misunderstanding on what I call a smooth finish, after two tries with my contractor I just called the guy that bought my Camaro and is painting the e38. Asked him to paint all the "exposed" steel on the house, he went over, told me a price, we negotiated (no *** involved).

D13.0685s.jpg

Everything is getting coated piano black and cleared with automotive grade paint.

Here is a badly focused close up of the work

D13.0686s.jpg

I don't have before pictures but believe me, night and day difference.

Now that we are in the garage.... Still dirty from grouting, a picture of the faux granite ceramic.

D13.0687s.jpg

I could not get a proper picture of the top but you can more or less see the patterns on the steps, sorry about that.

Kitchen... ohhh the kitchen...

Remember that concrete board wall, I never liked the edges of it, and when you don't like something you fix it right!?

WRONG!

you hide it like peppa pig from little toddlers!

So we made this

D13.0690s.jpg

Needs finishing touches of paint on top and bottom but made an awesome difference to that space, pretty proud of myself for that one, like nothing else yet on the house haha.

D13.0691s.jpg

This thing helps a lot hiding the bad edges and the lack of straightness of that wall. Looks like it was meant for it instead of made to hide ****.

Remember how I was crying because I did not have money to put the marble backsplash? I think we pulled out a rabbit.

It may not be everyone taste but we loved it.

D13.0696s.jpg

D13.0697s.jpg

The hole on the bottom of the island is a surprise from a punctured pressure tube.

We added a metal frame to the window to stop the tiling straight instead of having to turn to the edges and look like utter ****.

D13.0698s.jpg

Still have to paint it... a lot of stuff actually.

This a detail of the half bathroom, but damn bathroom is so small that even with a UWA lens I can't take a full picture.

D13.0689s.jpg

its like the baby of passive aggressive tiling.. tiny marble blocks glued to a net, glued to a wall.

Main bathroom got tubbed.

D13.0694s.jpg

Looks so empty that makes me feel a void inside.

Electricity has been slow, so far only circuits for the plugs are being installed since all the lighting will be controlled by the myhome stuff and the guy doing the install has yet to do his magic appearance.

D13.0693s.jpg

Thanks for reading, makes me feel like I have understanding company.
I would give you all a kiss, but most likely you are not my type and I have a wife so it could get weird.

You might as well have the ***. Not because you want to, but because it will make the thread better.

All ******** aside, this is great man. Carpentry is not about perfection. It is about solving problems. You are going 100% custom on this build. It is much harder than writing a check and standing aside. You have found the tenacity and persistence to work the problems and move the job forward. That's great.

Thanks for the updates. No *** was involved? I guess you're tired from being screwed by the neighbor.
On the boring white back wall, I first thought you meant the back house wall. Your solution looks great and hopefully you're putting mirrors or something highly reflective on the back wall of the actual house.

Yes the kitchen back flash is an acquired taste. Maybe the picture doesn't do it justice. The sitting part of the island is interesting. Looking forward to a picture of completed kitchen.

The master bath. Gorgeous!!! Is the shower entrance going to be open or a glass door? Looks like it is probably open which is how I'd want it. Looking forward to a picture of you in a bubble bath. NOT!!!

You have a beautiful house and I know you're ready to make it a home. Great job.

Maybe we're weird too, 'cause I showed the pics of the tiling in your kitchen to my girlfriend and her first reaction was: 'COOL!!! but you must have big cojones to make such a decision'.

I absolutely love it all! If I had the time to do my house at least 6 times over I would have done it your way.

I like those kitchen tiles also. Great contrast with the simple lines of the room and understated wood tones found everywhere.

Really enjoying this build, i bet you are looking forward to actually living there!

Enjoy the humor of the writing but sincerely, as a modern home, this is off the rails. I'm just hoping for your sake there's an end in sight and you can actually LIVE in it very soon. Realize too that many things that bugged you will disappear once you have all the furniture, cars, tool boxes, toys etc. in place.

I also agree Tacostand that finish carpentry isn't about perfection. It's about hiding flaws such that they aren't noticeable.

You really have a thing for my neighbor and ***, do you mind if I give him your number? :lol_hitti

Thanks for the cheers, I'm not sure if I understood the carpentry thing as you meant it because my English is lacking but what the hell, might as well build a taco stand.

You sexing too!? damn I guess I should not create a child build thread. I already had pics and explaining of positions to better procreate.

While I appreciate the idea of the open shower/wc I really have not passed that... hmm.. thing? that me or my wife would poop while the other takes a shower so, I would rather rub myself behind an etched glass door

The end is already here, there is a lot of stuff left to do, but I will tackle it while living there, as I have said many times before and have not done it yet :dunno:

Well here is the garage door update...

First of all, DO NOT LAUGH.

D13.0704s.jpg

You laughed....

Now, It looks super mexi-made but it actually goes up and down and I do not even care any more.

Here is the calculation .

D13.0688s.jpg

Now for the not so much surprise...

The Liftmaster won't last anything so I will be replacing it with a Manaras jackshaft operator.

Said that...

I have water knob ****! For me at least, I just love machined metal.

I swear if I was some sort of metal I would just machine myself to nothing and enjoy it all the way. ( As long as it doesn't hurt, I'm not that kind of person... I don't even have black clothes )

At first we were going to water jet the plates but turned out to be more expensive than just machining all the job.

D13.0699s.jpg

First set of Operations

D13.0700s.jpg

D13.0701s.jpg

Second Set

D13.0702s.jpg

And with a set of knobs with indents on them.

D13.0703s.jpg

This things are awesome, I can't properly describe the feel of them turning but just to give you an idea the knobs are 1.75 lb each!

I just hope the valves can take it hahaha...

Till next time!

PS: The hole on the kitchen is now a lot bigger and I can see the garage thru it, plenty of it.

Wow, man, this place has come a long way. I'm hesitant to ask but how bad has your budget been blown? I'm impressed that you're committed to getting things done they way you want. Too many people settle for the work they get rather than what they paid for.

Oh, ok I'll stop now. Glad to hear another hurdle has been conquered. Not only is the water fixture cool looking, I bet the feel does feel great. Solid!

Im just stubborn stupid... I have spent 2.3 times initial budget. But that is purely because detailing was never thought of. Also because I have been promoted a couple times at work while we were building, so new amounts of money not available before were injected.
The house costs very much what its worth, I just would not make any profit if I sell it right now.

Looks great!

you look great too!

what about bringing some of your wood designs outside to cover up your Brazer engineering on the garage. Build like a cover or something man.

Pfft that thing is getting covered for sure, what did you expect?

:lol::lol::lol::lol::lol:

Yeah, if burglars get in, we have weapons in every bathroom now.

Haha, I wish, the list is smaller.

No new whole house pics, it looks very much the same, so I will wait till we remove the temporal fencing.

Custom furniture is on the plan but will have to wait till we live there, I have some ridiculous ideas that my wife agrees on

any updates?

Garage door goes up and down now, I have seen video of it, have not yet watched that milestone in the flesh.

I have a "I won't let this go of my mind till I do something about it" Wife.
I have a "Can't go out of a store without buying half of it" Mother.

They went together to see wallpapers.

We have a lot of wallpaper.

And the finishing/painting of all "inside" metal is taking way too much time, we stopped everything until they finish because its getting everything else really dirty.

No point in clean/finishing if someone is doing more mess.

Sorry no pictures this time. I hate text updates but, that is the only thing I can give you. Beats the **** of not knowing anything. ( Not that any of you care at all but don't we all suffer from concrete underground drama? )

Your words are making pictures in my mind -- very interesting but also very disturbing.

Funny you say that, whenever I am reading a random thread and I see a post of yours, the only thing I can think of is a chain inside an ankle.

Gold!.. you nailed it! but more like... ahmm 17th century in France.

Believe or not they are way more sophisticated than me

Yet... I made the ridiculous choices :pimpflash
