Tony, that's a nice lantern. We loaned out the nickel-plated Coleman 50D my parents gave us and it was never returned. Only one we have left is a rusty 228H. It's still the best emergency light when the power goes out for more than a day. I love your dad's '54 and the dual carb intake brings back great memories. I picked up a dual 2-barrel setup for my '56 Chevy 235 stovebolt. With a solid lifter 3/4 race cam, 0.030 overbore and high compression pistons it was pretty strong for back in the day. I always hoped I'd get another straight six to hop up but the 4,678th time Liane asked me why I hadn't sold it, I cleaned it up and sold it on Hotrodders.com.
attachment.php

As an extra enticement I offered two fuel line setups: a single feed-through line setup and a dual line fuel block setup.
attachment.php

A cool feature on the Edmunds Custom manifold was the exhaust manifold heater box delete -- it used engine coolant routed parallel to the interior heater setup. It also had two vacuum connections, one for the distributor and another for the windshield wiper motor. Note the lack of an EGR connection.

BF: not only can you restore cool stuff you can make cool stuff from scratch even with Imported stuff. WELL DONE!!

yep I think you might have a couple brownie points saved up cause your bride is smiling (and crying) nicely.

nice video and I used to turn on "O Brother where art thou" vhs tape in my little garage and work while that song would play a few times.

in fact while I just played your YouTube video my bride was dancing to that song while she was making us dinner.

cheers and have a great weekend

This is awesome!

Vieux

Thanks for the visit! The lantern looked in really rough shape when I got it, but after stripping it all down it turns out to be in really good condition, except for the chipped porcelain.

Nice video tribute. Lamp looks good too.

Its always a pleasure having you visit DaBarn, My dad's 54 was a Alabama car and in real good shape when he got it, but my brother repainted it for him and it is in perfect condition and dad enjoys showing it off whenever he can

Wow that is one cool intake! I think dad would of like to of had that, but he does like keeping the 54 true to original as possible. :pimpflash

With a awesome weekend for weather I spent most of it working in the yard and doing some mushroom hunting, I did find some time to work on the lantern, I have all the pieces polished and the fuel tank all smoothed out and ready for primer, I just need to finish the top and it will be ready for primer and paint.

Here are some pictures of this weekends progress on the lantern.

Looks like you have some sanding to do.
You sure feathered out the porcelain nicely.
The polished parts will make that baby jump when put back together (SWEET)

Really enjoyed your posted with your wife's gifts - they turned out great. The lantern is really coming along...

I love your Dad's '54! That's really straight and clean. My Dad had a '52 as his first car - I still have all the paperwork from when he bought it used, including the cardboard T-plate.

Thanks for keeping us up-to-date with your projects!

Guys

Thanks for all the positive comments and following along!

I haven't had much time to post lately, been super busy with my day job and that is good considering the United States is shut down and has lost all common sense! I still work for a company that is thriving in this economic downturn, but enough of that **** :wtf:

I have been spending a lot of my free time working on one of my hobbies! taking care of my yard, we have had lots of rain here in northern Indiana and the grass is growing like crazy. I really enjoy doing my yard work and having a good looking lawn

I did manager to finish the Coleman lantern and I was really excited on how well it turned out. Here are the finished pictures.

1101-X5.jpg

I spent a bunch of time hand sanding this project.

I painted the bottom black, it looked like that's how it was originally.

I got all the parts painted and clear coated, I was really excited on how well it turned out

Wow, great refurb. Makes me want to get down my two old lanterns, box them up and send them to Indiana for some TLC.

The lantern looks great!

Jon

Thanks Jon! My daughter already said she wants it since it did belong to both of her grandpa's at one time  but I may have to keep it on the shelf for a while :)

Superb on the lantern!!

Homebody

Thanks for the visit! I can't believe how much hand sanding I had to do on such a small project, but my hands are now really smooth :lol_hitti

That lantern looks very sharp sitting there on display

Nice work Buddy

Don

Don

Thanks for the complement! I had some orange peel on the top part and I thought about shipping it out to you for a quick buff job

That lantern rebuild is enlightening.
You should be fired up at the result.
It deserves a place on your mantle.

Amazing work! Lantern look's like brand new.

T-handle

Thanks for the compliment on the lantern, it was a fun little project! It does have some sentimental value too.

I moved on to a honey do project, my wife owns a pretty nice 1968 VW Beetle, the last couple of summers it has been running a little rough and she didn't idle properly, after doing some internet research on rebuild kits for the carburetor, I decided to just buy a brand new one, the price was not too bad and I really don't trust myself rebuilding the old one. I threw the old one in a box and will keep it, as it was the original Germany made carburetor for the car. I also ordered new fuel lines and a fuel filter.

After completing the upgrades on the little 1284 HP, um I mean 1284 CC engine it was purring like a kitten, the new carb ran perfect right out of the box, I just turned up the idle screw a bit and added new gas

The distributor cap and rotor still look new but I may have to pick up a new set of spark plugs for it soon.

The wife has drove it quite a bit this week and is loving life in her little bug

those bugs were sure popular back in the day. every one was driving them.
I was a bodyman back then and cant count the number of fenders we replaced on them I remember they only cost $15.00 and it took less than 15 minutes to change one.

She looks pretty nice sittin there.

"Far out" on the bug can't believe I missed this thread just got caught up, great build and great projects within!

Bears Fan,
The Bug is sweet!

Gentlemen

Thanks for the compliments on the Beetle, it was my father-in-laws passion and my wife got the fever from him, they loved going to the local VW shows together to show off the VW's.

Don't tell my wife but I'm not a huge fan of VW's :dunno:

On the other hand they are pretty simple to work on and I have the 68' running like a sewing machine again and it puts a big smile on my wife's face every time she takes it down the road :)

On to new business! I have had NO time in DaBarn the last two weeks :wtf:

If you followed along, I had built a new porch on my house last fall and left a lot of the finishing touches until now. I got motivation to try and get it finished off. So I started with the siding last weekend, we picked out vinyl shake siding. I'm really happy with this product, the brand is Novik, it is real thick and not flimsy like cheap vinyl siding, it does snap together really tight too.

Note: this is my first ever siding job :scared:

34-X5.jpg

This is what it looked like when I started, I removed a outside faucet, I will relocate it inside the garage when I'm finished and I removed the old siding on one section first so I could finally connect the porch with the sidewalk.

35-X2.jpg

I wrapped it with new Tyvek house wrap and put new seal tape on around the windows.

36-X2.jpg

37%20%282%29-X5.jpg

It took me both Saturday and Sunday of last weekend to do just one section of the siding

38-X5.jpg

This weekend I decided to make the ramp connecting the porch to the sidewalk so I wouldn't have to climb up and down off the deck anymore.

39-X5.jpg

40-X5.jpg

41-X5.jpg

With the hot weather it had about kicked my ****, but I decide to put in the landscape too this weekend to get it out of the way.

42-X5.jpg

43-X5.jpg

This is where I left off on Saturday, I was whipped after this! I will take fathers day off today to rest my weary bones.

Now I just need to wait for Shorty to get up here and help finish all the siding, we are having Florida safety shoe weather right now

Happy fathers day to all!!!

I've been following along quietly and just saw the old Bug. I showed Mrs. JBLNUT and she gave me a prompt reply of "well, his wife has one, when will mine show up in the garage !!" She's been Beetle shopping for quite a few years and we haven't pulled the trigger on anything yet. We've narrowed it down to a early 70's Super Beetle and would like to find one that is all fixed up and purrrrty already so we can have fun with it and use it while learning a little as we go.

The deck/siding/ramp look fantastic !!!

Thanks for the visit and the compliment on the siding, it has been a lot of work and hot! I'm way to cheap and have too much pride or stupidity to hire anyone to do work at my house :wtf:

It has been a while since I have posted, This is where I left off on the house clear back in early July and it still looks like that today.

01-X5.jpg

And then this happened! OOOOOOH Snap!!! I broke my right tibia. This is me in the hospital after getting it put in a cast.

02-X5.jpg

This is a couple weeks later after another visit to Ortho and a second xray, they decided to give me a boot, it is now easier to take a shower. I had split my tibia vertically and it has to be non weight bearing for at least six weeks :wtf: That is a hell of a long time for me to stay off my feet and out of the barn

Before I broke my tibia I had started on a project in the barn that I wanted to do for a long time now, I wanted to start making my own signs for the barn as the price of buying a real vintage sign has just sky rocketed way out of my budget and I never liked buying the repops. The first one I wanted to start on was a Flying A service station sign that I always thought was cool. I added a few pictures of the one I want to replicate below. I had made a pattern for it a long time ago and posted it once before, but life got in the way and I put it on the back burner, I was excited to get back to the sign and was making good progress on it until I got laid up.

Here's the pictures of the progress on the sign and where I left off.

Tony, I hope you were doing something exciting to earn that fractured tibia. SWMBO has suggested I avoid having fun so I don't end up in the local ER with the maskless hoard.

BF, nice to see an update, bad to see a broken leg. How did that happen?
Hope you heal up quick and get back to making that awesome flying A sign.
Looks like it will be a heavy one! What gauge material are you using?

Thanks for the visit!

I messed up and put an extension ladder on a algae covered deck and when I went to get off the roof and back onto the ladder the bottom kicked out and I had to bail, landing awkwardly on my right leg from about eight feet up :wtf:

My Baileigh shear and my Baileigh 3 in 1 are two awesome pieces of equipment to have in my little hobby shop, my shear cuts through 16 gauge steel with ease.

Great advice! I need to stop doing stuff for others that sometimes gets me in trouble! Like cleaning their gutters, by the way I never planted any trees on my property just so I wouldn't have to clean my own gutters or rake any leaves, but yet I get injured cleaning some else's gutters :eyecrazy:

And by the way I think I'm getting to old for that **** anyway

Thanks for checking in! This is the first time in my life that I have had a broken bone, damn I just ruined my 56 year streak! I was lucky and didn't need any surgery so I still have that streak alive :)

I would love start working on the sign, but when I get this damn boot off my leg I need to get back to work on my house and finish it up

I got a little carried away on the size when I made the pattern for the sign, this thing well be big and heavy using 16 gauge steel. :bounce:

BF,
Sorry that you broke your leg.
I hope you are healing up quickly.

That sign will look awesome when you are finished with it!

Jon

Thanks for the complement on the sign, I love doing these kinds of projects but it seems like life always gets in the way of my fun time

Once I do finish the sign I need to pack it up and ship it out to Don Longs place for one of those professional paint and buff jobs :pimpflash

You send it and I'll be happy to paint it for you right after I take a pattern off it for myself. That thing is looking great. Second thought send the pattern with it.

So sorry to hear bout the leg. Hope it heals quickly so your wife can get back to her regular routine.

Happy to see your post today. I've been wondering what you were up to.

One more thing. I just went back and looked at your pictures again and must compliment you on how clean and organized your work area is. Makes me want to go into my shop and start it over again. Very nice place to work

Hope you get back on your feet soon.

It has been a while since my last post :dunno: Thanks for checking in on me.

Don I will send you that pattern, I'm still limited on how much time I spend on my feet, I'm still having lots of pain in my feet and one leg, hell even my knee is hurting

I may be a little O.C.D. when it comes to my barn, but my son calls it **** :wtf: I moved everything in it last week and swept the entire place removing all the spider webs, I like to keep things clean and organized. Everyone that comes over gets a kick out of how well my barn is organized :pimpflash

I did get a little more accomplished on the Flying A sign, it is 32" tall and has a wingspan of 80".

My six weeks are up, heck I broke my leg clear back on July 18th and I'm still paying for it with PAIN...its a bi#$% getting old :willy_nil

Thanks for the complement on the sign! "Things never move to fast in DaBarn" :dunno:

I have two sayings I always use when talking about the barn.

1. "One can never have too many clamps"

2. "Things never move too fast in DaBarn"

My grandmother always said "Don't do today what you can put off until tomorrow" :bounce:

My wife always says "All good marriages need a barn"

I took my wife out to a really good Italian restaurant last night to celebrate our 27 wedding anniversary, we have been together for 29 years now total.

Some people say I married an angel and the other half ask me if there is something wrong with her for being with me for so long :dunno:

BF, great to see you up and around and posting an update on your thread.
That ***** about your continued pain, hopefully that clears up soon and you are back to 100%. Although at the age we are 100% now is equal to 70% of our younger selves.
The flying A sign is looking good, can't wait to see how you finish it off.

Are you happy with your Bears so far this season? I'm hoping the season doesn't implode from Covid because the Seahawks are off to a great start. :pimpflash

I've been lurking too. Very nice work on everything. The ramp boards being perpendicular to the deck boards ping my OCD a bit but I understand that you had to do them that way. If you hadn't, you'd probably have two broken legs! ha ha (yeah, probably NOT funny to you)

Can't wait to see your sign finished and lit.

PS: The only thing worse than getting old is the alternative!
