Everything looks great!
I like the orange stands.

Jon

Thanks for the visit and the complement, I was unsure of the orange color selection, but I'm really happy with it after getting those pedestal's all together 🟠

DaBarn is still one of my favorite shops on GJ. So well done! Glad to see an update. How is your daughter doing in the house she bought?

Jay

Wow! thanks for your comment on my barn, there's so many cool garage's here on the journal.

Thanks for asking about Emily, she is doing great in her new house, she has it decorated so cute, she purchased a light bar for up over her bathroom mirror and I stopped over there Thursday night and installed it for her

They are daBears Orange. Just what we expected.

Scott

Should of painted those bases blue 🔵 :ROFLMAO:

I decided that my drill press stand looked so good that I had to give my drill press some love too, I kind of hesitated on tearing it down, even though it looks a little rough and dirty it runs as smooth as the day it came off the assembly line, my dad would say "its as smooth as Dairy Queen". :ROFLMAO:

According to Vintage Machinery's website model 101.03582 was produced in 1942 and 1943, its badged as a Craftsman but it was produced by Atlas.

04-X3.jpg

I managed to remove both of the badges without any damage

Oh ****! what did I do

Looks like I have its twin...waiting to be restored

Jay

You will have to send me a picture of the motor that's on your drill press, I don't think mine is the original motor and I want to see what's on yours? Mine is badged as Craftsman but I think it came off of a pedestal grinder?

cant wait to see your resto. I have an old Delta that I need to fix up myself

Thirdyfivepickup

I have a few updates on my drill press, I took all the parts to work and degreased them in the company's parts washer tank and got them sandblasted, I also organized all the hardware to help me get it back together correctly...hopefully!

06-X4.jpg

I took a picture of the bottom side of the motor mount, it gives me a good idea of what the original paint color was, I will try to match it.

07-X4.jpg

Hopefully I can figure out how all these parts go back together  :ROFLMAO:

08-X4.jpg

The parts are in great shape after blowing 80 years of crud and paint off of them

Looking great Tony! I don't know if you've seen this before or not, but @11b30b4 has some awesome Craftsman Drill press rebuilds and a wealth of knowledge on the subject. Here's a link to one of his builds that is worth a look.

Here are a few shots of the motor on my DP, not sure if it's original or a replacement, my guess is original. I'm no expert though. :lol2:

I know that I'm a little late to the party but man do I like your new shop look!!! It makes me want to come and work in there and lock my shop up. But then I thought of how much dirt and dust that I create working in my shop and didn't see a vac system in yours so I guess I'll just stay home and dream a bit. The colors in your place are very inviting. I may have to take a page out of your book and buy me some new equipment like the bitchin bead roller. Don't you have a magnetic break too?. Your Spark plug cleaner looks right at home next to the gas pump along the wall. Good luck with the drill press. You have made a good start and wisely marked everything.
I'll try to drop by again soon.

Are you planning to polish up the table and top of the base of the drill press to a chrome finish. I sure would and because of my crazy ways I'd be thinking of how to get rid of the casting marks before painting, but that just me LOL

Tony, I will get you a photo of the motor on my DP. Remembering how all the pieces go together is a challenge when it might take a while to get it back together. Good luck, nice start so far

Jay

Thanks for posting photos of your motor 📸

It won't be a problem getting my drill press back together, its not that complex  :headscrat

Thanks for the link, I love those old craftsman drill presses, that guy done a nice job of restoring those old drill presses, I love that gold color that they were painted with back then.

Thanks for the pictures of your drill press, after looking at your motor, I believe the motor on mine is original too, what was throwing me off was the toggle switch is gone on mine and it made me think that it came off of a pedestal grinder, yours has the same switch too, someone must of rewired it at sometime in the past and removed the original switch, also the color of my motor does match my drill press too

Thanks for checking in on DaBarn and the complements. I try to do all my grinding and sanding outside to keep DaBarn clean, I will try to make you proud and remove all of those mold lines and polish the base and table on my old drill press.

The spark plug cleaner was an awesome addition to "The Little Party Garage" one of my favorite things in the barn

I had to put the drill press on hold today, I have a really nice lady that I have worked with for the past 18 years and she is retiring on March 27th, so I decided to make her a shelf for her retirement party gift 🎁

01-X4.jpg

I got to work in my wood shop today :ROFLMAO:

02-X4.jpg

I cut a piece of hickory 30" x 6" that I had on hand and then added some flat stock steel to it on three sides and attached it with some #8 brass wood screws.

03-X4.jpg

04-X4.jpg

I got the mounts finished too, I used some 1/2" floor flanges with some 1/2" black pipe ******* and elbows, I soaked them in degreaser and got them primed.

I will paint the steel on the shelf flat black and the shelf mounts a moss green and I will give the hickory a couple coats of stain to finish it off.

I love the way you build those shelves. I've been tempted to borrow that idea but haven't taken any time to work on my garage yet.

Don

You can steal my ideas anytime, but just remember you have to post pictures when completed

nice tape measure.

My guess (as a lifelong Bears fan) is that it's a 25 footer but only reads to 24 feet... because the Bears always seem to come up short... lol

Thirdy

I think its more like a 100 footer that only reads 12 feet :ROFLMAO:

The world famous and fellow Garage Journal member PugetDude sent me that many moons ago, I try to slip it in my photo's once in a while

Nothing too exciting in DaBarn this week, I did finish up the shelf in time for a retirement party for a special friend next week 🎁

06-X4.jpg

07-X4.jpg

08-X4.jpg

I painted the two mounting brackets moss green, and the steel around the edge flat black, I put two coats of dark walnut stain on the hickory wood followed by two coats of polyurethan, I used 0000 steel wool in between coats. I hope she likes it

I made a trip to Menards this past week, as I drove up to the parking lot I spotted this car and just had to shoot a couple of pictures  o_O

01-X4.jpg

I'm not sure how this guy could every safely make a righthand turn o_O

02-X4.jpg

I don't think the queen would ever approve of this  :ROFLMAO:

Due to my job allowing me to drive around the city a lot, I see these vehicles often. They are usually so packed that you can't see through the back glass and it's uncommon to see through the passenger side glass too. Strange thing is it's not a case of homeless most of the time. Sometimes it is, but it's rare.

How's the drill press coming Tony? The shelf looks great! The car... not so much.

KansasProud

Oh look squirrel 🐿️ I got distracted and set the drill press parts aside for now. I purchased an anvil back in December and I wanted to get a stand built for it ever since, so I started one last weekend.

01-X4.jpg

02-X4.jpg

I bought some treated 4x4's and cut them down to 26" long, when I went to test fit them up I realized how out of square they were.

03-X4.jpg

04-X4.jpg

I had to scrap these

05-X4.jpg

I went back to the big box store and found some Douglas Fir 4x4's that were finished square on all four sides, Douglas Fir is a little softer then what I wanted, but I'm not planning on doing any real Blacksmithing on it, I will just be using it for light duty work.

I made a cardboard template to locate the holes for the 1/2" threaded rods, so they all end up in the same spot

06-X4.jpg

07-X4.jpg

08-X4.jpg

I drilled and glued three rows of three together and let them dry over night 🗜️

09-X4.jpg

I drilled 1/2" holes through the center for three more threaded rods and did a test fit.

10-X4.jpg

I sanded the three sections where they will mate up to give them a tight fit before the final glue up

A QUICK RIDDLE: how many clamps does it take to clamp up an anvil stand after gluing it?

Answer: ALL OF THEM :ROFLMAO:

11-X4.jpg

12-X4.jpg

Or at least sixteen, because that's all I had :ROFLMAO:

Now to let it sit for a couple of days to cure

You've pointed out a problem that I've had for a long, long time now. My garage is tragically infested with a couple herds of squirrels that distract me on the regular.

I took apart an old drill press about a year and a half ago in order to restore like you. It currently sits in several bins patiently waiting on the squirrel exterminator so I can resume restoration. I'm very excited to see yours completed.

The anvil base looks awesome! Has more hardware than most stumps I've seen and will make an excellent addition to DaBarn. My experience with treated lumber has been similar to yours. I have a corkscrew willow with straighter limbs, less twist and more right angles than most treated lumber I've seen. :ROFLMAO:

See Tony, you don’t have enough stuff. 🥴

01-X4.jpg

Shorty

I came across this Sun Automotive tester this week in a storage container here locally, I don't think I have ever seen one of these so complete and in such good shape and it still works, I can get it for a good price, but I think I'm going to pass just because of the shear size, I really don't have the room! :(

On the other hand I'm on the lookout for one of these small Craftsman bandsaws. If anyone knows of one available, let me know. It matches my Craftsman drill press and is from the same era.

Picked up a couple 1958 Veedol Prints, in great condition, they may be reprints? I don't usually buy paper or cardboard items, but I thought these were pretty cool

03-X5.jpg

04-X5.jpg

I picked up a couple of frames for the prints, now I have to play garage tetris again  :ROFLMAO:

80-X4.jpg

I was at my favorite watering hole the other day and spotted these, I immediately thought of The Garage Journal :thumbup:
