Found some time to check in and catch up.

Great grab at the auction. I love going to them but have trouble holding to a price limit on something that catches my attention and I always buy more things than I went for lol

Your wall is taking shape very quickly (and I like it)

I'll be back

Homebody

Thanks for checking in and the complements, I was really jacked up when I got this stand and I liked Duker's idea of using it for a table base, now I just need to find the time to work on it :)

Thanks for stopping by and the complements, I love going to sales and auctions but I have to be careful on what I drag home, I will never find the time to work on all of it :dunno: But I do need to find a mount for the old brass fire extinguisher so I can get it hung :)

My son Cody bought a new house and the chimney didn't have a rain cap on it, well the firebox rusted out, so until he gets it replaced we needed to cap it off, so I made a cap for it until he is ready to repair the firebox or replace it with a pellet stove or maybe a gas log?

I measured the chimney top and made a rain cap for it...

01-X4.jpg

This is what it looked like from the top of the chimney...

02-X4.jpg

I cleaned the top up and added a large bead of silicone to hold the rain cap on...

03-X4.jpg

The cap fit perfect, this should keep it dry until he decides what he wants to do with it?

04-X4.jpg

Did I say he bought a cabin on the Lake? I had a visitor while working on the chimney, A Blue Herring sitting on the pier :)

Nothing to exciting this week, But I did pick up two new Coke signs for DaBarn, they match the two Pepsi signs I already had hanging. After rubbing them out with some car wax I got them hung up, On the west wall I picked up a long Coke display rack sign to go along with the Pepsi sign already hung up...

A while back I picked up a box of stuff at a auction cheap, Inside was a old really rusted nail puller, my first instinct was to toss it! but I hung onto it. I decide this week to restore it. I soaked it over night in apple cider vinegar then took a scotch bright pad to it, then I gave it a couple coats of self etching primer followed up by a couple coats of black enamel paint, now I have another good looking tool to place in the ole' toolbox :)

This year I was out mushroom hunting in a woods just down the road from me and I walked up to this tree a saw something sticking out of the ground (not a mushroom), but what appeared to be a top of a old rim so I dug it out of the ground and I was surprised to see I found a Model A rim, I keep digging but never found the car  I decided to pressure wash it today and it cleaned up pretty good, but it is well pitted...I think I will sandblast it then paint it red, it will need a lot of primer. Then I can pick up a chrome center cap for it and just use it as a display piece.

Its Memorial Day weekend and there were a ton of garage sales going on in our area and the wife had one in particular she wanted to go to, so Saturday we set out to go junking and we didn't find anything that we wanted there! On the way back home I spotted another that we ended up stopping at and I scored this really cool Alemite Pneumatic Grease Gun. It has a really cool art deco style to it and was painted a cool dark burgundy color. It appears to be in fantastic shape and complete, except for one missing caster. This thing will look awesome restored (Whenever I find time to get to it) Or maybe I'll just send it out to Don Long's house for a quick restore  Turned out to be a really good day and buy at $25.00...

My neighbor has two old barns he wants to tear down or have the local fire chief come and burn them down to make way for a new pole barn, eventually. Meantime he said I could have all the wood out of them that I wanted, boy I wish I had a place to store a bunch of it before they are burnt down and gone. So this weekend I went over and scored a few of the old boards from inside and made Mrs Bear some wooden crates out of it and she loved them :) I only had a couple of hours in them...

Thanks for stopping by and the complements, I really like your place and the work you do too. Stop back...

BF, its a 1930 wheel, the same as mine.

Great find.

1/2 Cup

Always a pleasure when you stop by, I guessed the rim was around the 30's, thanks for the info, now to find the time to work on it

Now that you have both Coke and Pepsi, you need a "Take the Pepsi Challenge" sign right between them.

NUTTSGT

Great to have you stopping in! Thanks a lot!!! now you got me looking for another sign  It would be cool to have a Pepsi challenge sign up there...keep your eyes open for one...

I have serious barn wood envy. Those are a very rare find around here! AZ wasn't exactly a farming Mecca! Can't wait to see how that grease tub turns out.

upndown

Nice having you check in, I wish I had a place to store some of that wood before they tear it down, someday when I had time I could make some vintage looking signs and other items with that wood...

My wife was admiring your Vonnegut family find when I showed her this thread the other day. Enough that she said, Kendallville, that's not far. Let's go over and give him $100 for it. Doubt that would happen, but she's into anything Vonnegut. ;)

Bears Fan,
I just got caught up on your thread.
You have done alot of cool things!
Great job!

Thanks for stopping in at Dabarn and the complements, I like all the organization you have been doing too, your garage is pretty popular here on The Garage Journal  I will be passing by Niles next weekend on state road 12 as the wife and I head to New Buffalo for the weekend...

Thanks for dropping by DaBarn, I really like the grinder pedestal, we have decided to make a dinning room table out of it, when I get the time, so sorry but its not for sale...

that is one hell of a well built pole barn! thanks for in depth look at the build, and the info on the spray foam. i inherited a 40x40 with 14 walls when i bought my new house and it is just a shell and i was wondering how much it would be to seal it up with foam and your numbers don't scare me all that much.

Thanks for the comments on my barn, If you can swing it, spray foam is definitely worth it! makes a huge difference.

BF, the grease gun is sweet. Great score.

No doubt there would be some beautiful timber in that old barn and good to see you have been able to salvage some.

I really would like to tear a bunch of that wood out of those barns if I had a good place to store it for projects down the road...

Great Score on the gas pump!

Can't wait to see what you do with it.;)

PugetDude

I wish I was retired, I have enough projects to keep me busy for years :)

Your doing my head in with all your great scores BF.

1/2 Cup

Thanks for the comments, I have been pretty lucky lately and have had the opportunity to pick up some cool items for the barn, I really enjoy working on the vintage stuff, especially the gas and oil items I have collected. I just hope the wife doesn't catch on

Love the pump  would look great in a TEXACO theme ;) congrats!

Sunbimmer

Thanks for stopping by! I was really excited to have picked up the pump, most of the old guys around here don't usually want to sell their stuff, I just got lucky yesterday. I'm not sure what brand to redo it in? it looks like a old Conoco decal on the front, I do like the yellow, maybe a Shell pump would look good?

Hey Bears what a great thread. Love the barn build and the truck.

Are you going to seal the barn slab to protect it a bit and keep the concrete dust at bay ?

You are on fire with some cool old finds there.

Thanks for sharing

Bears Fan,

I was just kidding, I too think the yellow looks fantastic and I think to restore it in it's original CONOCO glory would be a very wise choice.
It's besides TEXACO one of my favorite gas station brands.

Sunbimmer

Thanks for taking the time to look in on my barn, I really like the Texaco brand too, I have tried to mix it up and not stay with one theme or brand in DaBarn, I like anything vintage gas or oil  The pump restore might be a ways down the road... "there's never enough hours in the day"

Grumblebum

Thanks for the comments and compliments on the barn, believe it or not I sealed the floor just a few days after it was poured, I think I done it to soon and I used some sealer I got here in town at a local farm store and it wasn't worth a ****! I know I need to reseal it again, but not sure when that will be.

Keep up the practice on your welds, Those vertical and overhead welds take a lot of time to master :)

Hi Bears Fan.

I just some time reading from the beginning and what an awesome space! What you have done is really great and will make sure to use some of your ideas in my own space.

My great aunt and uncle moved from Fort Wayne to Kendallville and I went out to see them on the way to South Bend when I was looking at colleges way back. Really nice out there.

Will be following along.

OK, I will admit when I looked at the first few photos I said - "seriously? this looks like it may be a budget DIY project that might turn out on the bad side of 'good'". WRONG! After going through the complete build I am totally impressed with EVERYTHING. Although this type of construction would never fly here in South Florida it's very well built. Very, very nice build...you have many great talents!

I have been working on a little side project with the help of Cody, my son. Not really barn related but I thought it would be interesting anyway...I used to rent a propane tank from a local business and I always had to buy my propane from them, so I decided to buy my own tanks and make a cement pad for them to sit on, This will allow me to buy my propane in the summer time when the price is down. I decided to buy two 500 gallon tanks instead of one, its hard to find a 1000 gallon tank around here since they are in high demand. I built a 8'x10' cement pad for them to sit on and started to repaint the tanks, it did require some sandblasting, one of the tanks had some heavy spots of rust on it, I was nervous sandblasting a propane tank that is 60% full  I got the sandblasting done today and had to shoot some self etching primer on the blasted areas because we have some rain rolling it. Good thing to because it is pretty dry around here right now...

Not a lot going on this weekend, we did get some much needed rain here! I was able to get the body work completed and primed on all three of my propane tank covers, there ready for paint now :)

Thanks for the visit and the complements! I'm not a experienced contractor or construction working, I decided to research pole buildings and just jumped in and did it all myself (with some help from family and friends). I saved quite a bit of money. That's the way I was raised. I'm really happy with how everything turned out and enjoy posting and sharing on The Garage Journal. Pole buildings are really a popular construction method in this area.

Of course he does, he's a Bears Fan!

Not much happening in DaBarn, had a busy week at work, but I did manage to get some paint on my three propane tank lids, I went with a gloss charcoal gray color, I got a little orange peel but that's okay I wanted a thick coat of paint on them. Heading to New Buffalo Michigan for a weekend away with Mrs Bear, We will sit on the beach at Lake Michigan, hit a couple of wineries and maybe a antique store or two

Nothing got done in DaBarn this weekend because I went to New Buffalo Michigan for the weekend with Mrs Bear, Had a fantastic time, we hung out on the beach, did some wine tasting at The Round Barn Winery, went to some local antique shops and ate some great food at some local restaurants/bars...It was a great way to recharge the batteries and get away from home for three days :) And we took a bunch of pictures...

I brought home my companies Vermeer trencher to help out a neighbor tonight, He is having a pole barn put up and I ran a trench from his house to where the barn is going up for the electrical conduit, it is 270' from the house, I tried to talk him into putting the barn a little closer to the house but this is what he wanted? The company putting up the barn will now have power available to them.

I swear I had nothing to drink before I started

Having trenching equipment like that available, must make you a very popular guy on the block, lol!

Looks like you had a great get away! I love being near the Great Lakes. My wife and I where just up at her families place Door Co., on the Green Bay side, a week ago. Warm weather, fine dining, cooking out, enjoying the new beer huts on the lake, and of course shopping for the wife.

I think your future summer home there will require a matching Bears Cave, lol! Great photos!
