Bears: up in the PNW all that stuff might have cost me more than your truck so happy to see you were able to buy it and still own your truck to haul it home.

while i love the look of your shop's walls i don't have the space for those sort of things and need the walls for racks to hold materials and cabinets, but i'm starting to see the benefit of maybe having one wall for just stuff to display.

great finds and any chance you took and can post up a few pictures of the guy's place where you found all of this?

drives

Thanks for the visit! I really don't want to post any picks of the shop where I picked up my latest finds, I may get to go back? so I don't want to give it away or upset the guy as they are some really good folks. They actually sent my wife and I a thank you card and a gift card for supper for helping them out on a little roof project...People like that are getting harder to find these days...

Cool parts cleaner. I have the No-nox version of this pump. I guess when you say you’re just winging it, you won’t be lying. lol

The parts washer is a cool piece and I still haven't decided what to do with it yet? I don't run across items like that very often so the right time to buy them is when you see them  Sometimes you just have to wing it and hope for the best :pimpflash

Vieux

Thanks for the visit and the inspiration I get from visiting your garage. I always think twice about throwing anything out now and I say to myself... Vieux would just repair that

im very envious of that wing skin!

racestatus

Thanks for commenting on my thread...I never thought I would pick up that airplane skin...something I never thought I would have hanging in DaBarn, but everyone that has seen it loves it :D

I'm still waiting for that spark plug cabinet to arrive

Thanks for the compliments...I do like the parts cleaner! It is in good shape too...I have never had one particular gas or oil brand that I collect or I'm loyal to, but I have always seemed to take a liking to the orange of the Gulf brand :D

Picture postcard. Glad it’s up there though. On a positive note, no grass to mow so more time to find treasures.

Your "Lil party garage" looks much bigger from the inside and in there is really shaping up nicely.
Your new additions are super and I'm a little envious of all the Gulf products
I wish I had started collecting when I was your age.

P.S.
I got the price sign hung in the Sinclair station

BF: yep there are still GREAT PEOPLE IN THE USA and all over the world so don't give up on the human race just yet. I totally understand you not sharing more pictures even if it's only to protect the folks that sold you all those COOL OLD THINGS.

i have to say you have a good eye and keep up the great work.

Is your daughter's car almost ready for her to pick up at Christmas? does she know you are fixing it for her?

MERRY CHRISTMAS!!

He also has two other cabover's completely restored, one is setup as a wrecker and the other is setup with a pickup style bed on it and they are top of the line custom builds! If I ever get a chance I will see if I can get some photo's...

I think the picture of the barn makes it look smaller then it is? just a weird angle...I have sort of taken a liking to the Gulf products, maybe it is that orange paint? Hope you and Ann have a wonderful Christmas and the price sign looks good hanging at the Sinclair Station

This thread is absolutely fantastic! The quality of the garage build, the quality of the memorabilia, the photo quality are all incredible. Love the 2014 Silverado (I have one too), and love the lawn as well! Haha.
Thumbs up and Merry Christmas!

Thanks for checking in! I hope 2018 will be a good year for you!!! I'm getting tired of this arctic weather that has gripped us here in the north :wtf: If it keeps up you may have to make room for me down there in Florida, HELL at this point I would stay in your garage! "I will work for heat"

I have had this idea for a long time to build a little hardware store for DaBarn, I always see a lot of things being done with these Harbor Freight small parts storage cases, well just before Christmas I saw that these cases went on sale for only $5.99 each for the 20 bin case that is 13" x 16 1/2" x 2 1/4" deep. I ordered 12 of them I wanted to make sure I had enough room to organize all my hardware into one place...

24668247927_08bdbc45d4_o.jpg

At the last minute I added two of the deeper bin cases to fit some of the larger hardware I have, these cases are 13" x 16 1/2" x 4 1/2" deep. They were on sale for $10.99 each, so now I have a total of fourteen cases, this should be suffice for all my hardware  These are nice cases for the price and the little bins are removable...

24668250547_d41bc2becf_o.jpg

I had some 1/2 sanded plywood on hand, left overs from building my Goodyear sign, I thought about using 3/4" plywood to build the cabinet with but I wanted to save some money...I ripped all the pieces on the table saw and then pre drilled all the holes...

25665232738_bb133f488a_o.jpg

I ripped 26 pieces of plywood down and added a chamfer on the front to act as slides for the cases.

24668247437_38344f5ed5_o.jpg

I was sanding the sides of the cabinet before I assembled them and my daughter snapped this picture of me outside of the barn in sub zero weather sanding on the sides, she said the picture was Garage Journal worthy and I had to post it

24668249887_519cd5f69e_b.jpg

Due to it being so cold here! I decided to take all the parts in my basement to glue and screw them so they would be at room temperature.

25665231988_60e02762d6_b.jpg

Here is the cabinet all glued and screwed together, I thought about using brad nails to hold it together, but i wanted the extra strength of the screws

24668249227_509027146d_b.jpg

Here is the first test fit of all fourteen cases in the cabinet...Perfect fit!

25665229248_2244242f96_b.jpg

Just another shot of the cabinet all glued up and the cases installed...

25665231238_9d521abe03_o.jpg

After getting the cabinet done I got the idea of adding some shelves to the side of the cabinet to hold my collection of spray cans, I got all four shelves cut, glued and screwed together...

24668248557_539102bd18_o.jpg

I cut some 1/2" flat stock I had left over from making some shelves, I drilled and screwed them to the front with some brass screws...

25665230478_2dafa95599_o.jpg

Here is a finished shelf ready to add to the side of the hardware cabinet...

24668246847_29d146bcbc_o.jpg

A little test fit :pimpflash

39546278371_ebecfd8e24_b.jpg

I glued and screwed the four spray can shelves on the side of the cabinet...

24678546117_44e2f3d040_b.jpg

39546277071_681da1fcf5_o.jpg

I picked up four soft rubber swivel casters for the cabinet today at the local farm store, I want to make a angle iron frame for the cabinet to sit in and the casters to mount to...but I have no 1/2" or 3/4" angle on hand. I will have to pick some up next week...I want the cabinet to be mobile.

24678545777_4d6624b8a4_o.jpg

One last shot of the cabinet, I need to give it a final sanding then prime and paint it, I have yet decided what color to use? But I'm partial to blue

With the paint cans on the left side I still have the right side of the cabinet empty...I'm up for suggestions on what I could add to it?

Bears Fan,
Great job on the cabinet!

Jon

Thanks for the compliment! It was a fun project and it wasn't to complicated, just a little time consuming...It gave me something to do with the extra days off at Christmas and New Years...

Great Idea, that is marketable i'd think.

Rockyboy

Thanks for the visit to DaBarn! Although not perfect I do like how the cabinet turned out! It was fun to be able to do a project even though it has been colder than HELL here

The cabinet looks awesome. You may want to order a spare parts bin, in case someone finds a way to break one. I have had friends in my garage break hinges off little storage boxes, and container got crushed as someone was letting the lift down. Of course, when you have a back up, you will never need it. $5.99 is cheap insurance....

It was crazy cold last week - brave soul sanding in that.

That's totally ******** BF - sanding in the snow.

How about a small lift up wing on the other side so you have a small surface area to work from and somewhere to put your drill(s) when working on a project ?

Cheers GB.

Wow! It has been a while since I have heard from you or had a chance to visited your thread! "not enough hours in the day". You are the first one to give me any suggestions for the other side of my hardware cabinet! Its funny you mentioned drill bits because I have no good place where all my drill bits are organized? I have been trying to come up with the idea of a small cabinet on the side with a door to keep all of my bits in, but I still need to get the roller base finished first :willy_nil

I did take some time to start the frame for the casters for my hardware cabinet, I picked up some 3/4" x 3/4" x 1/8" angle iron and welded up a frame for the cabinet to rest on...When I do a project like this I always miter the corners, but I decided to go with a notched version to see how it would work out! I do like how the corners turned out, but it did take me a little bit of hand sawing with a hacksaw...

38965147574_ea81090805_o.jpg

The corners turned out real nice and square thanks to my 90 degree corner clamp, I love this toy... uuhh I mean tool

25802397928_af44925dbd_o.jpg

I got the frame all welded up...I extended the width of the frame for more stability since the cabinet is 4' tall and will be pretty heavy once loaded up...

38965147184_bde46cfe88_o.jpg

Here is the bottom of the frame, I ground it smooth so I could mount the caster to it, but with the angle iron only being a 1/8" thick I decided to put some thicker plate steel on the bottom so I would have more steel to tap...

28039159899_d829ec29dd_o.jpg

I cut some 3" wide flat stock that is a 1/4" thick into 3"x 3" pieces, I will use a 1/4-28 fine thread tap for the caster bolts, that should give me 6 or 7 threads for each bolt, then I will weld the plates on the bottom of the frame, this will allow me to change out the casters if one ever goes bad...

Speaking of mounting casters, unless you have the fine thread laying around, you can probably use coarse. I was removing the casters of a tall Vidmar cabinet this weekend and they used these nut plates with 3/8” coarse bolts. 86af2aea5c05f650925389e53b9db991.jpg
The small threaded part is only about 1/16” thick. The cab holds 500# or more.

Thanks for the suggestion! I already picked up some fine thread bolts, I just haven't had the time to work out in the barn this week! My dad had a hemorrhagic stoke and we have been spending some time with him and the family down at the hospital...

Great corner clamp. So nice and easy to do straight angle.

Vieux

Thanks for the visit! I highly recommend one of these clamps to anyone that does much steel work! It makes getting a square corner really easy and quick...A very handy tool and well worth the money

I'm just now checking in this year 24 days in (MY BAD)

I like the hardware cabinet you have 3 sides to fill not just 2
I'd consider putting it on a turn table and maybe put my battery tools on the back side. I like the idea of a small portable work table with flap.

Oh yeh rather than going south come west. I have a guest wing in the house you could occupy while thawing out (and I could use some help on a few of my projects)

Hope you have a great 2018

Don

I'm just now checking in this year 24 days in (MY BAD)

I like the hardware cabinet you have 3 sides to fill not just 2
I'd consider putting it on a turn table and maybe put my battery tools on the back side. I like the idea of a small portable work table with flap.

Oh yeh rather than going south come west. I have a guest wing in the house you could occupy while thawing out (and I could use some help on a few of my projects)

Hope you have a great 2018
