BF: so how's the scanner working? your daughter is a cutie and i'm usually a fan of long hair, but her short haircut looks great. how many times did you have to chase off the boys/men while she was living with you?

hope your new porch and the coming year are amazing!!!

stay warm!!

That is my wife in the picture, she is a keeper. I'm one lucky man :pimpflash

The scanner is good, since all the police and fire channels have moved up to the 800 mhz band, I don't have a list yet of the local frequencies to add in, I have been doing random scans to find some, but I have not had a lot of time to play with it. We have a life flight helicopter that flies over the house all the time and I would like to see if I can pick that up :headscrat

Don

Thanks for checking in on me! All is good here in NE Indiana, just been busy with work, life and ****** Indiana weather. But I know that is no excuse to not post :wtf:

I have had been working on a few new projects in DaBarn, My daughter is moving out of the house and we are giving her our old kitchen table, so my lovely wife got to go out and buy a new one, well I decided to surprise her with a coffee bar to go with the new table.

01-X5.jpg

I got to use my new Baileigh 3 in 1 on this project, it is awesome to have this in DaBarn

03-X5.jpg

02-X5.jpg

04-X5.jpg

I cut six 1" strips out of 16 gauge steel and rolled them into 12" circles :pimpflash

05-X5.jpg

I cut 1" square tubing into four 36" pieces and added a top plate and a base plate to the main legs out of 16 gauge steel and got everything tacked together.

06-X5.jpg

I decided to add a piece of 1" square tubing horizontally to give the whole thing some strength and stability.

08-X5.jpg

I gave it two thin coats of flat black and then two coats of flat red, after it was dry I wet sanded it with a scotch-brite pad to give it that worn/vintage look, then I rubbed it with dark walnut wood stain to give it a very cool vintage aged look.

I loved this technique and I picked it up from one of my favorite makers on YouTube, here is a link to one of his videos.

ZH Fabrications

07-X5.jpg

I picked up some of my favorite wood (hickory) and cut two pieces down for the top and glued them together and put two cleats on the bottom to hold it all together, then I cut two more pieces for the shelves.

After a bunch of sanding I added three coats of boiled linseed oil and that was it, here are some pictures of it when I finished it, but that was a couple of weeks ago and since then the wood has darkened up quite a bit with the linseed oil on the hickory wood and it now looks amazing, and couldn't be happier with it.

Gentlemen

Thank you for the visit and the complements! As weather starts to improve here in Indiana maybe I will get motivated to spend more time out in DaBarn.

Shorty that is a awesome desk that DH Fabrications made on that YouTube video, well worth the watch! I really liked the finish he had applied and how he used two pieces of channel back to back to make the legs

I finished restoring a Mills Model #107 one cent vending machine recently, it was made in New York City and used in the subways to dispense gum in the 1930's.

I had to clean it up and repaint the inside, but the outside is all chrome, it is way too costly for me to have it rechromed, so I just buffed it out, it does have a few pits in it, but I can live with that

02-X5.jpg

I located some reproduction decals for it, they were not the best quality but they will do, I have since made my own decals on CorelDraw and will get our local sign shop to print them out on vinyl.

03-X5.jpg

These are the candy weights for on top of the column, they also keep the column from vending and taking your penny if it is empty, I cleaned them up and polished them, I was lucky to have all six of them, usually some of them are missing.

06-X5.jpg

05-X5.jpg

I have it finished and it did turn out nice, I'm now working on stocking it up with some time era correct candy, I have been making my own labels on CorelDraw, then I cut some small pieces of wood and wrapped them with Reynolds Wrap then cover them with the new wrappers

Great thinking on making your own brand of chewing gum. Tell us more of this program you are using to create those nice labels

Thanks for the visit, Making fake candy, that's what happens when my brain has too much idle time

The program is called CorelDraw it is kind of expensive, but it is cheaper then Photoshop and I think it is a little more user friendly, Photoshop is a great program, but I like CorelDraw for doing these little decals, I want to start making more when I get time. I watched a lot of YouTube videos and self taught myself on how to use it, so I think anyone could figure it out. I have had a lot of fun with the program, I'm adding a link to their home page. They do have a free trial period.

https://www.corel.com/en/

I received a Amazon gift card for birthday (best present ever), I really like Channellock brand pliers, some company's do one thing great and I think Channellock does that with their plier sets and they are still made in America.

And they are blue

I always wanted to outfit my entire plier draw with all Channellock, but never could justify doing so until now, it might seem trivial to some, but now all is right in DaBarn.

I call it OCD, my son calls it **** :headscrat

I salvaged some barn wood off of a neighbors barn before they tore it down, they have since put up a new pole barn in its place, My brother has a plasma cutter where he works and he cut out the letters for me, I cut the barn wood down to size and made this sign for my neighbor to hang back up in their new barn, I found the old gate valve handle laying in the old barn too and gave it a coat of new red paint, Anglin is the maiden name of my neighbors wife and it was her dads farm.

Candy/gum machine is sweet, Nice job!
I've used Coreldraw for 20+ years at work and home.

$99.00 at Best Buy for the Home and Student edition is all most will need.
It's always been the go to program for sign makers, vinyl shops, etc. Pick up a cheap plotter for a few hundred bucks and you can make decals, stencils, etc.

BF, nice additions to the can collection. I really like the barn sign you made for your neighbor.
Your plier drawer is looking better, as soon as you get rid of the turquoise, yellow and orange handled pliers I think we all will be able to sleep better. :lol_hitti
Great job!

Thanks for the visit and the inspiration from when I visit your thread "The Big Party Garage" The Almite bench is gorgeous :pimpflash

The shelving unit came from a visit to a IKEA store, it reminded me of a old vintage medicine cabinet

Very nice tribute and a thoughtful gesture.

With the warm weather coming I was able to mess around outside, I started making another picture frame.

I finished making the two main pieces for the frame.

I got the frame all welded and cleaned up.

I started to make a desk for my office last year and in the middle of it I took on a new job for the same company, well my new office came with its own built in desk, so this has been sitting in DaBarn untouched for some time now. Well I decided to make a rolling bench out of it, so I ordered some heavy duty casters for it, the overall height of the casters are 9 1/2", the wheels are 8" x 2" this makes the bench's over all height at 38" a great height for me to stand at and work, my back hurts if I sit to long so I enjoy working upright.

02-X5.jpg

03-X5.jpg

04-X5.jpg

5-X5.jpg

Now I have to figure what kind of top I want to add to it? it matches the other rolling bench I made some time back.

BF: great looking bench and nice that both benches are the same height now. did you order the bigger casters with that in mind?

here's something i'm guessing you have the skills to make if you'd like a fancy top for your benches. another member made this for his kitchen island while he was updating his old home to sell and I saved a few pictures cause I do like it a lot.

happy to hear your weather is getting better cause sunshine seems to make me smile a bit more too.

Thanks for the visit! I already added a 2" maple top to the older rolling bench I have, I may do something similar to the newer bench to keep them exactly the same height, but I'm also thinking of a welding top too, similar to this one?

Top-X4.jpg

I don't know why but I never posted anything on the other bench I made, I do have some bad quality pictures of it, as I built it.

This brings me up to date on the older bench, I decided to decorate the maple top up a bit, so I'm wrapping the sides in some 1/8" steel.

I bought a new welding helmet, Viking 3350 and man this helmet is awesome! it makes a huge difference on the quality of your welds when you can actually see :wtf:

I spent some time out in DaBarn last night welding up the trim piece for the maple top.

I test fitted the trim piece for my rolling bench, all that is left to do is add some screws to the sides, clean it up and then tear it all apart for paint.

BF, as usual nicely executed. I might steal that metal edge trim detail in the future.
Stay safe out there...

Thanks for the visit! I just finished my fourth week of working from home and it has been a very different experience for me, but I'm thankful to be working and doing well

My wife had a birthday roll around Wednesday the 22nd, so for the past couple of weeks I have spent my free time in DaBarn making her birthday gifts instead of buying her something. I had three projects going all at the same time and it was interesting trying to keep that a secret from her

First up is a spice rack, all of our spices are in a top self cabinet and when she needs one she has to climb up on a chair to reach them and that always made me nervous, I still have some details to finish on it, but she loved it.

01-X5.jpg

Every good project starts out with a cad file blueprint :lol_hitti

02-X5.jpg

I used 16 gauge steel that I had on hand.

03-X5.jpg

I added four shelves and then ordered some spice bottles online, it will hold four rows of four, she will be able to have sixteen of her most used spices at arms reach, so I won't have to see climbing up on a stool :wtf:

06-X5.jpg

I added some 1/2" wide by 1/8" flat stock around the sides to beef it up, I thought this made it look a lot better.

05-X5.jpg

I welded on three barrel hinges for the front door.

04-X5.jpg

Then I got started on the door its self.

08-X5.jpg

07-X5.jpg

09-X5.jpg

You have heard the saying one can never have too many clamps :lol_hitti

I clamped it down tight to keep it from warping as I welded on it.

10-X5.jpg

11-X5.jpg

I have it welded up ground down and ready for paint.

13-X5.jpg

15-X5.jpg

It was a huge hit with her, she loved it.

I still need to make a door knob for it and add a magnetic latch too.

I gave it two coats of black paint and then three coats of red paint so I can rub it out, like I did the coffee bar I made to give it that worn vintage look.

Next up is a picture frame I had started to make, I posted pictures of it on a previous page, well I finished that and gave it to her for gift number two.

07-X5.jpg

I made some aluminum tabs and tapped the back of the frame with some 10-32 screws to hold in the pictures and glass.

06-X5.jpg

08-X5.jpg

09-X5.jpg

I painted it yellow (her favorite color) and added three pictures of her family that I printed out at the local CVS.

10-X5.jpg

Yes! This one made her cry, can you say brownie points :pimpflash

01-X5.jpg

02-X5.jpg

For the third gift, I made her a shelf. I started out with some pipe fittings that I already had and I had to get rid of all that damn Chinese stamping, I ground them down and filled them in with body filler.

03-X5.jpg

I painted them a moss green and lightly sanded them with some scotch-brite pads to give it a worn vintage look, then I cut down a piece of left over hickory for the self and added three coats of boiled linseed oil for the finish.

04-X5.jpg

I was surprised on how much she liked it

Okay correct me if I'm wrong? but I think I made enough brownie points on her birthday gifts to last me until our anniversary on October 16 :pimpflash

The next project has a bit of a story behind it, my dad owned this lantern for years and at some point he gave it to my father-in-law, they were old car buddies, well my father-in-law owned it for a long time until he became ill, so he decided to give it back to my dad. Well one day my father showed up at my house and he brought the lantern with him and he gave it to me, he said here I thought you might like to have this. So I guess it has become a family heirloom at this point.

Well I decided to tear it down and restore it, I guess I will have to pass it on to my son someday.

It is a Coleman model 242B, the base was nickle plated and it looked rough, I didn't think I would be able to get the old plating off, I just hand sanded with some 80 grit and then some 120 grit and I was pleasantly surprised it came right off and looked great, It just has one small dent and a few deep scratches.

Here is some pictures of the progress so far.

I had to throw in this photo of my dad and my father-in-law taking a cruise in dad's 1954 Chevy, a couple of "GOB's" (Good Ole Boy's).

I also put in a link to a video I made of Pop and his 54 if you want to watch it.

This is awesome!
