Excelent execution sir. Beautiful!

Jim

Thanks for the kind words, looks like you have your hands full with your basement, driveway and knee walls, it always inspires me to see how much time you spend helping out your neighbors, family and friends (y)

Tony, what are you spraying your paint with? It’s really coming out nice.

Scott

I do have a couple of okay Devilbiss brand HVLP spray guns, one for paint and one setup for primer, but with the cost of high end automotive paint supplies I don't break them out too often o_O I will though when I paint my Flying A sign I made some time back, it is too large to paint with rattle cans 😂

10-X4.jpg

08-X4.jpg

On my small barn projects I do use rattle can paint, its easy, fast and cheap! (just like my women) I do like the high performance Rustoleum brand, it seems to have more PSI when it comes out of the can, I have tried to prefect the rattle can paint jobs as much as possible.

I'll never forgot this lesson from a mentor when I first started out in a body shop right out of high school, it was a simple phrase, but it stuck with me all these years later, "if you can feel it, you can see it", meaning its all about the prep work, and you need get it right and smooth before you paint.

I always do the best I can to properly prep what ever I'm about to paint.

Then I give it a heavy coat of primer, then I wet sand that down smooth with 600 grit, then do it all over again if needed. I'm a big fan of wet sanding.

I think one of the biggest mistakes people make is they lay the paint on too heavy, they are looking for full coverage on the first coat, I usually do three very light coats and I always set my timer on my phone for a least 20 min. giving each coat time to flash off, sometimes longer depending on the temperature and humidity, when using rattle cans I move the spray pattern pretty fast across the project to try and reduce the orange peel as much as possible, after the project dries I usually wet sand that down with 2000 grit and then clear coat it.

09-X4.jpg

I always like to sit my paint projects out in the sun to see if I can get them as hot as possible before painting them, I also always use this little trick, I keep this old bean can around, I will fill it up with the hottest tap water I can get and sit the paint can in it to warm it up, I will even put more hot water in it between coats to keep the paint warm, this will thin the paint out some and will help it lay down smoother.

11-X4.jpg

I did get the black laid down on my rebar sign that I was working on, it came out pretty good considering the temperature yesterday morning, it did have some orange peel, but I will wet sand that out with 2000 grit.

Burritos?

Scott

That is a fantastic idea! I actually think that would be better then the one I came up with 😋

In a past life I used to be a big bass fishermen, I thought maybe I could turn this into a Rapala bait vending machine.

$4 microfiber towels? I guess Hawaii is out of the question? LOL

Billy

Yeah, I think Hawaii is out of the question 😎 I do enjoy a good trip to the Harbor Freight store though, they do have some good Chinese things there 😅

BF, I will remember those painting tips, especially the hot water bath. Since sunshine is rare around these parts for 9 months of the year, I warm up my part with a heat gun.
I used to enjoy bass fishing back in the day too. 👍

Thanks for the tip! I will have to break out the heat gun on my next paint job, I will try and clear coat four projects I have waiting on me this coming weekend, I do miss the bass fishing too, but I sold my boat many moons ago! 🎣

Man...you fooled us again. We're going to have to work harder to get inside your mind. Oh, wait..... that might be a bad idea. LOL!

Billy

There's plenty of room in my head, I'm usually not there half the time 🤣

I worked on the Rapala vending machine last night, it is huge and I'm struggling on how to fill up all the space on it to make it look like it was produced that way, so I added another Rapala decal to the bottom and I spent about an hour masking off the rivet heads so I can paint them black or red to give it some color contrast, did I mention this thing is huge o_O 🤣

You need to add some images and text about the lure you want it to vend. Most vending machines that you cannot see what is inside (thinking truck stops) have images and sales jargon about what you are getting.

It is looking really good so far, it just shows of the perfectly polished aluminum!

The bass looks good; maybe add another ( or a Wallleye or a Muskie?) facing the opposite direction above your lower Rapala label?

Another thought would be to blow the bass up so big that only the head and mouth fills the center of the space, especially if you could have a lure in his mouth.

You’ll figure it out if you stare at it long enough…

Thanks for the advice! I'm not sure what else to add on it just yet? I did get to work on it some tonight (y)

That's some great advice right there, you read my mind 🤣

I purchased the bass decal, I didn't make it, I have a vinyl cutter, its not a printer.

10-X4.jpg

I masked all of this just to paint the nine bolt heads on the front black

12-X4.jpg

I did make a couple of Shell decals for my rebar sign tonight.

Same company (Flood) that’s why I mentioned they offer latex and oil versions. I’ve had better results with the oil based stuff; never had any problems getting latex to flow out.

Finally! sunshine, 65 degrees and no rain here in Indiana, so I had a good day to get four projects clear coated and a little closer to the finish line 😎

First up is the Rapala vending machine.

12-X4.jpg

11-X4.jpg

Second is the rebar/shell sign I started forever ago 😂

13-X4.jpg

Third is the Veedol sign! Just needs some dry time then its ready for assembly :)

Signs and vending machine looks perfect. Great minds think alike, I just took the chicken off the grill also, Pat loved it.

Jim

Thanks for the comment! I had a good weekend trying to get some projects finished up, we started a step challenge program at work so I'm keeping track of my steps and I got 11,027 Sunday just working in the barn :D

At my day job today I was in an Amish grocery store in Topeka Indiana doing a quote to get fiber in the building, adding a hosted PBX phone system and running cat6 wire to all the required locations when I had a WTH moment! it stopped me in my tracks, I just stared at it trying to figure out what the hell was someone thinking o_O

I decided to make some garage art, I started with copying a vintage Ford V8 logo off the internet and cut them out on my vinyl cutter.

01-X4.jpg

02-X4.jpg

03-X4.jpg

I cut some out in yellow and black.

04-X4.jpg

05-X4.jpg

I cut a small license plate out of 16 gauge steel.

06-X4.jpg

Primed.

07-X4.jpg

A coat of red.

08-X4.jpg

I used the decal as a stencil.

09-X4.jpg

I added a few stripes with some fine line tape.

10-X4.jpg

Then I laid down a coat of black and then pulled the tape and stencil off, then I wet sanded the plate with 2000 grit, my vinyl is pretty sticky and it made it tough to pull off 😓

11-X4.jpg

We finally had some warm sunny weather, it was a nice day to lay down some clear on it.

12-X4.jpg

13-X4.jpg

I was happy with how it turned out! but I did get some dirt in the clear

DaBarn just gets better and better with your additions. Ever since I saw your tank/shelf project I have been on the lookout for a similar tank, with no luck in my area.

As always, your projects look great! When I looked at the Rapala dispenser, the first thing that came to my mind is that needs some type of made-up OSHA warning on it. Something ridiculously humorous, of course.

Just color sand it smooth and put some more clear on it.

Billy

Billy

That was the second time I sanded the clear and resprayed it o_O :ROFLMAO:

Tony,
Looks good from here.

Jon

Thanks, I think? my dad always said "I like it! the further back the better I like it" 🤣

I believe i fixed it for you...........seriously it does look great.
We tend to be our own worse critics.

Chris

That's funny you said that, because my wife said the same thing to me, but she does it too with her crafts and cooking 🤣

Thanks for the complements on DaBarn, I got really lucky on finding that tank, but that's the stuff I'm always keeping an eye out for, "if your not looking for it you will never find it", that's what I keep saying about the lottery too, "if you don't play it you will never win", well that one hasn't worked for me yet 💰 🤑 🤣

Jay,
Seattle is a relatively “new” city; most of the industrial development occurred when pressure vessels were welded rather than riveted. These are much more common in the rust belt.

Scott

That is some interesting history! I didn't think about that, if I run across another tank like that I will ****** it up and see if anyone wants to pay the shipping on it

Thanks for the visit! I'm still racking my brain on what to add to that Rapala vending machine? when I see it I will know, it might take awhile though o_O

Warning:
Not for human consumption.

Scott

WARNING! YOU MUST BE 21 TO PURCHASE, CAN CAUSE YOU TO GET HOOKED!

I’m thinking one of the sing fish for dispenser.

Shorty

That made me laugh! I remember when the Billy Bass came out, my dad had to buy one 🤣

Nothing says redneck more than having a Billy Bass hanging on the living room wall 😎

"DaBarn" is looking pretty spiffy these days. I love the tank shelf and the signs, I hope to make a few next year to go with the Sinclair theme. Keep up the good work Tony!

Jim

Thanks for the compliments on DaBarn, you need to finish up all your house projects so we can see you working on some of those cool garage projects, are we going to have to call Pat? 🤣

Tony
You have my attention. The lil party garage is filling up nicely. I love all your personal touches

Don

Thanks! That is a real compliment coming from you, the barn is cheaper than a psychiatrist 🤣

I do enjoy making my morning coffee, then sitting down to see whats going on in the Big Party Garage 😎

I started a new project yesterday, well actually an old project, I had made this rolling bench a long time ago for the barn and was never happy with how it looked, so I never finished it, but I have been using it ever since.

This is what it looked like when I stopped working on it

05-X4.jpg

Its a great bench, 2' wide 4' long, made from 2"x2" square steel with 3/16" wall thickness, very heavy and stable with some pretty good casters on it, but I didn't like the 2" maple top and the 3/4" boards I cut for the bottom shelf.

16-X4.jpg

I removed the wood.

17-X4.jpg

Then I picked up some 3/4" pine panels from the big box store.

18-X4.jpg

I had to rip down the bottom panel to fit, but the top panel was a perfect fit.

19-X4.jpg

Fits like a glove OJ 🤣

20-X4.jpg

I added a nice radius to the top, then I removed the casters and took the bench to a local Amish man that does custom sandblasting, I didn't feel like spending hours getting the mill scale and rust off.
