Paid $31 for it, auction stated "used, very good condition" in the description. The whole point of buying used, is getting a decent piece, at a bargain. At $30, I'd expect just about any hand tool to function. I have seen auctions stating "needs repair." Pictures were also shoddy on this auction, but the BIN price was affordable. I was hoping that the seller was just bad with a camera. Like I had said...I find the tool cosmetically fine for the price paid on a used tool. It's the guts that concern me. I didn't buy it because of "ooh pretty!" I bought it because "hey, Cornwell!"
I've been selling on eBay for 16 years.
In your first post you mention the peeling chrome. Later you mention that the pictures were poor quality, implying that you couldn't accurately gauge the ratchet's condition, but that the Buy it now price was good. This tells me that you were buying an item, unsure of its condition.
You also stated that the seller said it was in good used condition. Was this all he said? Did he go into more detail? A good seller would include separate descriptions of the items physical and mechanical conditions. Does this seller have an eBay store selling tools exclusively? He might not know to test a ratchet under load. Did the ratchet skip when you turned it by hand? If not, I don't think you can realistically blame him.
This scenario plays out a lot with lazy sellers. BUT, my opinion ( barring additional info )is you bought an item with a short description light on details with crappy pictures. You took a chance. Man up and deal with it.
