Local-ish dealer said that he'd have no problem rebuilding the ratchet. Even if I gotta cough up the cash for the rebuild (nothing mentioned of this), I'm still doing well in my own opinion. I just gotta meet him on route sometime this week. He's a few towns over, but I wanted to get a look at other products, and possibly snag some stuff.

For the Ebay ratchets I've bought, I mentally note how much a gear kit would cost (for the Snap on's 9.00-12.00 bucks). I stick to the price I want to pay plus a rebuild kit. Ive had pretty good luck with that plan and its worked out that I've only replaced 2 kits, one from wear and the other from a damaged selector lever.

Good luck with Cornwell getting your tool up and running!

Thanks. I am looking forward to it. I wish he were closer, but I can't do much about that. I'd rather do face to face business anyhow.

Paid $31 for it, auction stated "used, very good condition" in the description. The whole point of buying used, is getting a decent piece, at a bargain. At $30, I'd expect just about any hand tool to function. I have seen auctions stating "needs repair." Pictures were also shoddy on this auction, but the BIN price was affordable. I was hoping that the seller was just bad with a camera. Like I had said...I find the tool cosmetically fine for the price paid on a used tool. It's the guts that concern me. I didn't buy it because of "ooh pretty!" I bought it because "hey, Cornwell!"

I've been selling on eBay for 16 years.

In your first post you mention the peeling chrome. Later you mention that the pictures were poor quality, implying that you couldn't accurately gauge the ratchet's condition, but that the Buy it now price was good. This tells me that you were buying an item, unsure of its condition.

You also stated that the seller said it was in good used condition. Was this all he said? Did he go into more detail? A good seller would include separate descriptions of the items physical and mechanical conditions. Does this seller have an eBay store selling tools exclusively? He might not know to test a ratchet under load. Did the ratchet skip when you turned it by hand? If not, I don't think you can realistically blame him.

This scenario plays out a lot with lazy sellers. BUT, my opinion ( barring additional info )is you bought an item with a short description light on details with crappy pictures. You took a chance. Man up and deal with it.

Yeah. Dealer warrantied the whole thing. Definitely exceeded expectation. He'll be getting more of my business.

I was more or less in the op's situation, except my deal was face to face and I knew the appearance of the ratchet. Got it home, took it apart, found it had a chipped tooth. Was OCD enough to want new gears, stopped at Cornwell truck and asked about BUYING a new kit. He said the peeling chrome(my little OCD didn't go so far as to worry about that) was grounds for warranty replacement and gave me a new ratchet, guranteeing he would get my business in the future.

They are definitely one of my favorites. I wish my Cornwell dealer didn't leave the business. No one has taken his place either. Solid tools at good prices. I have taken lug nuts of with my jr40. It ***** that they don't sell off the site but if I was a dealer I would like it because that protects their territories

A dealer that warrantied my second hand stuff would get a lot of business from me, too...

Lifetime warranty. If the dealer/company backs their product like this dealer did, then I would place my confidence there. He offered to warranty the whole thing, it wasn't an issue I pushed.

I'm a huge believer in tool warranty and believe that a company should always back up their warranty as it was stated whenever sold. I take advantages of warranties myself but not disadvantage.

Unless I'm grossly mistaken... Cornwell warranty is for the original purchaser only. I have not and will not get any Cornwell tools replaced under warranty unless I purchased it first hand. I'm sure if I inquired to a driver about a ratchet kit and he chose to replace it under warranty for free then I have to assume as a representative of Cornwell, he has that right and it's good for business. I would also divulge the fact that I purchased the tool off of ebay in used condition because it would be the right thing to do.

"Lifetime warranty" aside I doubt I will get any tool truck driver to be that gracious to me from a second hand purchase and if I did, just as I was stating, he would get a lot of business from me.

I've been working on the want list...he sent me outta there with a catalog. I'm looking at 2 more ratchets, a better set of 3/8 shallows, possibly deepwell too, and a better set of 1/4" deeps. He did me a solid, I can at least buy a few things that I want anyway off of him.

Maybe buy the Cornwell stuff from that list rather than looking at the cheapest Mac offerings like you mention in the other thread?

I look at many options. Most the bigger names have something I want. Cornwell the 3/8" shllows, deep 1/4" sockets, and long handled 1/4" drive ratchet, Mac the deepwell 3/8". Gearwrench the intermediate 1/4" sockets. This isn't even getting into long pick sets, or a good pry bar for home mechanical work.

It's all a work in progress. At the end of the day, I like bsing about tools.

Haha well that's understandable. I would get good relationships going even just with the cornwell guy as he seems willing to work with you and buy some stuff. It's good and you have a great driver it seems like.

Sounds like that they backed their product, good deal.

Thanks. I will get in contact with him. Still need some Cornwell goodness. What area of Akron does he cover?

He's close to Goodyear's world headquarters. I'm not sure what territory he covers, when I need something I just e-mail him and drive to his house early mornings. I live is Tuscarawas Co ( New Philadelphia) but work in Barberton, we have a Cornwell guy down here but he won't return messages. I found Bill with a google search and he's been great to deal with.
