Makes you wonder if you got screwed on the price for the other work he did...
I know, right? Honestly, I've been fine with the process/prices up til now (work actually hasn't started yet)- we got a number of bids and everything seems in order. I am not big on hiring folks for this reason exactly, though- it always costs SO MUCH to get something done. I kind of feel like he thinks he's got us on the hook, might as well start overcharging, hoping we'll say "eh, whatever, just go ahead."
All told, I am hoping there's been a miscommunication. The actual gutter part of the bid (remove old cobbled together leaking junk, replace with new, seamless 6" gutters) is only $1100, so I'm currently holding on to the hope that he meant (talked to my wife this morning) that it'd be $1400 instead of $1100. I can swallow an extra $300. I guess we'll see.
Am I completely nuts to think that this should be a relatively minor change instead of over $1000? This is just trim painting, not the whole damn house.
Update- Contractor DID in fact mean "an extra $1400-" apparently the painter they always use is hiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiigh, in all possible sense of the word. So I'm painting this weekend.
