Except without the laughing.

The contractor who's putting together the roof tear-off re-do and gutter fix/replace on our house just quoted me $1400 to paint the fascia board behind the gutters. Unless I am completely off my rocker, that's going to be $100 or so in materials, and probably another $200 worth of time out of Jose and Juan up on the roof.

I'm disappointed. Sounds like I'll be up there on the roof painting this fine sunny weekend away.

I know, right? Honestly, I've been fine with the process/prices up til now (work actually hasn't started yet)- we got a number of bids and everything seems in order. I am not big on hiring folks for this reason exactly, though- it always costs SO MUCH to get something done. I kind of feel like he thinks he's got us on the hook, might as well start overcharging, hoping we'll say "eh, whatever, just go ahead."

All told, I am hoping there's been a miscommunication. The actual gutter part of the bid (remove old cobbled together leaking junk, replace with new, seamless 6" gutters) is only $1100, so I'm currently holding on to the hope that he meant (talked to my wife this morning) that it'd be $1400 instead of $1100. I can swallow an extra $300. I guess we'll see.

Am I completely nuts to think that this should be a relatively minor change instead of over $1000? This is just trim painting, not the whole damn house.

Update- Contractor DID in fact mean "an extra $1400-" apparently the painter they always use is hiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiigh, in all possible sense of the word. So I'm painting this weekend.

He must hate painting as much as I do. Usually when you get a crazy price it is because they really don't want to do it, but for crazy money they would reconsider.

Crusty has hit the nail on the head I think. When I was a young teen I used to get asked to weed flower beds all the time when I was out mowing in the neighborhood. I'd quote $20/hr just because I hated doing it.

For reference, I think I charged $12/hr to clean up leaves which required some expensive blowing equipment and fuel. I didn't mind doing the work, though.

Make sure you keep an eagle eye on him while he is doing the other work, sounds like hes a little hinkey.

Keep a close on those guys. A lot of work crews are staffed with prisoners on work release program. They will scope out your house, shop, and belongs and tip off their cronies who are out on the street to rip you off at a later date.
