Dealing with interior stucco walls.

Hello Gents,

The skinny.

My place is in Florida. Reinforced cinder block construction.

The inside walls of my garage have the same cement stucco finish as the exterior. So nothing can immediately lie or be mounted flush on the walls. Ceiling is drywall on 2x4's.

I want to install a tool / equipment organizers on the wall. How to deal with the stucco?

I've read 2 options:

1. Run a skim coat of drywall mud over the wall and then sand it smooth. I would still need to use masonry anchors of course.

2. Rig up a layer of plywood (kinda like in a work van) and then mount everything to that.

Anybody dealt with this use and have any advice?

Thanks.

I'd go with #2.

Unless you're sure you're not going to move anything down the road... the stucco texture might be hard to match/repair.

Still going to need to drill the blocks to screw into plywood unless you fur it out far enough.

Get a broken brick or a broken piece of concrete block 4 or 5 inches square and use the flat side of it as a sanding block to knock off the high spots on the stucco. This will leave a surface that might not appeal to the next owners. Or, option 2 as others have said.

Same construction & also in FL.

I have Gladiator wall cleats for clip-in holders of various types. I mounted my cordless chargers on the wall cleats using small pieces of plywood for each charger to remove 'em from the workbench surface.

For Gladiator steel welded cabinets, they're held by Tap-Cons & fender washers. I used a ledger board beneath the cabinet bottoms to simplify hanging/aligning the cabinets. No issues after 7 years.

To fit Gladiator shelving in the returns of the OH door walls, I shortened the depth. Put a 1/4" piece of Masonite on the wire shelf to ease removing things from the shelves & also to keep something from falling through the openings.

I would not bother with drywall mud over stucco, not really compatible materials, just use the stucco finish as is unless it's a really rough finish, then consider a color coat over the stucco.
