Finally pulled the trigger on the Fuel 3/8" impact gun and jumped into M18 last week. I replaced my drill and impact driver with M12, and picked up an M12 Hackzall, but am without a grinder, or a real sawzall.

Look at their site, and what do I see but...

M18 Fuel grinder, sawzall, circular saw, and 1/2" (and 7/16" hex and 3/4" for that matter) high torque impact. Well, guess I'm glad I hadn't picked any of the regular stuff up yet. I'm like a crackhead for the battery life of brushless. Dammit, there goes my wallet. Again.

You say the brushless tools have a longer run time?

I do say. :D I put the 3/8" impact through its paces today, doing struts on a rusty Acura TL. Used it for anything you'd expect (read: not the axle nut, etc.) including using it on the spring compressors. Battery still had 2 out of 4 bars showing when I finished. I've used the M12 impact for a work week on one of the 4.0 batteries. I seriously charge the battery in the LED light more often.

Not sure if you know but the grinder has a very short run time on the battery.
Any grinder has short run time on a battery simply due to the amp draw, especially when trying to use it for anything more then cosmetic dressing.

I know my Makita did, it would kill a battery in a matter of a few minutes. Hence why I like the idea of a brushless one. Curious to see how long it would go (along with even higher capacity 4.0AH batteries)... can't be any worse, I wonder what kinda improvement it'll be. Interestingly, the Makita didn't discharge much before it would say the battery was dead and performance sucked. The battery would be fully charged in like 10 minutes, instead of 30.

I was just thinking in my head the other day it couldn't be too long before someone dropped more brushless tools. I'm not holding my breath for a W7150 killer here, but maybe I'm wrong. Oh well, I'm pretty happy with my 3/8" impact, but I'm in a shop, with a 2135 and 15cfm of air. If I were a field mechanic I'd be thrilled.

I'll just be grateful they've given me motivation to not buy the Sawzall and grinder for a while now.

I don't expect a W7150 killer, but something more competitive with it would be nice.

I just gut my m18 Fuel 3/8 impact yesterday and used it at work today. Awesome tool, light weight, and doesnt seem to vibrate as much as my M18 1/2" impact or the snapon 3/8 impact that I have used. So I thought to myself "I will have to buy the 1/2" fuel hi-torque impact if they come out with one" and now they are.lol

I used the M18 grinder today with a 4.0 ah battery to cut some 1/2" rebar; 9 cuts drained the battery to 2 (out of 4) led's left. I was happy enough.

Which number we going off of... 780 ft./lb. max, or the 1100 ft./lb. "nut busting" (whatever that means) claim?

If I had to guess, I'd go with 650 ft./lb. or so.

The answer is...........YES

Seriously, I don't care. Just something that's more competitive with the current offerings. The W7150 looks great but it's balls expensive and I'm unlikely to EVER buy anything else for that cordless platform. So just something more potent than what they're making now with batteries I can use on other tools I actually want and can afford.

IR proved a cordless impact wrench can kick ****, so the other manufacturers have to be finding ways to copy that design. I don't really care about marketing numbers on paper anyhow, I just know my V28/M28 impact wrench is a dinosaur by today's standards, like bringing on old GM 6.5 diesel to compete with any of the new diesels from the Big 3.

Totally agreed. I just about don't care what it does, the W7150 is insanely expensive. The owner of one of our neighbor shops just bought one from the Matco guy... $700 later. :wtf: I think I've got about that in my M12 Fuel impact, Fuel drill, Hackzall, rotary tool, flashlight, and M18 Fuel impact, with a total of 10 batteries between the systems.

If the impact has really good torque (like at least my 650 guess) and is under $200, I'll have to think about it. I don't really need it, but... dammit, I'm gonna end up buying it anyway. ****.

I just bought my W7150 new for $343.25 shipped from the tool warehouse and I also am getting a free extra battery from the IR promo. That MATCO guy is a ripp!!!

IMO for $343.25 shipped, you shouldn't have to make weekly payments. I'd use a breaker bar until I saved enough rather than spending 2x more.

I'm interested in the new 1/2" Fuel impact. I haven't seen a full size brushless impact gun on the market yet. Can't imaging what that's going to be like in terms of runtime.

Does the tool warehouse give you the tool and take small weekly payments?

Are you seriously trying to justify paying more than double the price on an item just because you can make weekly payments? :dunno: Wow.

Use a credit card. You can make monthly payments.

Anyways, I'm interested in the 1/2" M18 Fuel. My 3/8" gun does good with my 1-ton trucks lug nuts...but I'd rather use something a little larger to keep the wear & tear down on my 3/8. Dragging out the impact and air lines, and firing up the compressor for smaller jobs *****...

"picked up an M12 Hackzall, but am without a grinder, or a real sawzall."

Real sawzall? That Hackzall can do anything a sawzall can do. I have one and wouldn't live without it. That Circular Saw is what I'm waiting for, will be a nice addition to my Milwaukee collection. And yes, everything I've read about brushless is it's the future of cordless tools, a good future.

Anxiously awaiting longer term reviews on the Fuel grinder in terms of real world use & runtime...a grinder is one of those tools I've said countless times "Damn it would be nice to have a cordless" but by all accounts from everyone cordless grinders **** more then a shop vac when it comes to runtime and real world usefulness.
I know my Fuel drill has excellent run time..a brushless grinder if it can follow suit will be a quick add.

Really? It's great for being 12 volts, and the runtime is probably close to even with what my 18V Makita did, but it's a little down on power. Works good enough for cutting pipes and other small stuff for now, though.

I'll probably let you know shortly after it's available. The grinder is most definitely on my short list. Why not, I've 3 M18 batteries, and only one tool.

I had a chance to use all of these new M18 FUEL tools at the Milwaukee media event and can definitely say they are very impressive. The 1/2" Impact with friction ring has pretty much the same max torque as the W7150 (both claim 1100 nut busting torque) however the Milwaukee also has 2 speeds, brushless motor and 4.0Ah batteries so run time should be significantly more than the IR. The 1/2" detent pin mode has a little lower torque because it's made for utility and steel workers.

On the grinder we were actually able to use this tool as a grinder, go figure. I leaned on it very hard continuously and it didn't stall like we've seen with every other cordless grinder ever. This is the first time there is a tool that actually grinds. See our video in our recent post on it - http://www.coptool.com/milwaukee-m18-fuel-saws-impacts-grinders-almost-here/

The Milwaukee press release on these tools from Monday said these will be available in October which is a pretty good sign, that probably means November at the latest.

What was the RPM on the new grinder?

How does the 28V grinder compare to this new one? My impacts are so so but I can live with 9 cuts on a rebar half draining a battery, I wouldnt need to lean hard on it but a little would be nice. I nioticed my circ saw got usable again with a new batch of batteries. Is a grinder more greedy? How many watts does this battery put out? If it made half what a corded 4 1/2 did it would be useful.

The grinders have a huge amp draw, at least my Makita did. It seemed like it was only useful for maybe the upper 1/3 of a battery charge. The Makitas charged fast enough anyway, but a battery that was utterly useless on the grinder would be fully charged in about 10 minutes, instead of 30.

I'm gonna have to put my hands on the grinder for sure. The impact is even more tempting seeing how much power it's got.

The M18 FUEL grinders all have 8500 RPM speed which is slow for a 5" but about the same as most 6" grinder's RPMs. The M28 grinder is 8000 RPM and probably the closest thing to a real cordless grinder before this. We would expect the new brushless motors with 4.0Ar to still have more power and more runtime per charge. The handle is also very slim making it one of the most comfortable grinders we've used corded or cordless.
