Is the history behind that measurement somehow tied to lathes? Lathes are spec'd by their swing, or iow, how large of a workpiece can be put in the spindle. It seems an odd thing to use to measure a drill press even though that's how it's been done for probably forever.

And bandsaws use the radius, just for consistency.

Something more logical, like the size of the work that can fit between the CL of the spindle and the column would be much more logical for a drill press. Much like the measurement RTM referenced on a bandsaw, the throat depth.

The band saw / drill press comparison doesn't quite work. A band saw is cutting, so the capacity of the throat is the most logical specification...you can't have anything larger than that as your result or remove anything larger than that as an offcut.
A drill press is putting a feature (a hole) in a plane. Diameter gives a good visualization of what you can do. Actual reach would work just as well, but apparently the marketers got possession of the spec sheet in the very beginning of drill press history and knew that bigger is better. If you are more comfortable with actual reach, learn to divide by 2.

I can assure you, a 14 inch wide board will not fit between the CL and the column. Only half will.That is what they do.... cl of spindle to edge of column.
yup on the 7" from column to chuck center, so you can drill holes anywhere in a 14" wide pc of material
