Hey ,
Well as often happens in my shop and I am sure others here, I went to fix up my old Delta / Rockwell drill press a bit basically clean and oil and grease along with fix the variable speed adjustment handle. Well that is where it started unfortunately I found several other problems... I went to unplug It and found the cord had dry rotted so time for a new one. I then moved on to the variable speed adjustment I had never fully run out since I drill mainly steel and such but it was always stiff to move. Found two gears of the assembly missing teeth / tooth and a few teeth with burrs from hitting at the wrong angle I presume because of the other gears missing teeth. I have searched several sites that were suppose to have parts but most only had basic stuff you could replace from a good hardware store. So I will see if someone can cut me new ones or order blanks and file to fit though they are hot fit I believe so it will be a PITA. Moving on to new cord took the box apart to do so and found not only had the outside sheath dry rotted so had the wires inside for the power cord and the wiring for the motor to the switch.. Sigh back to the hardware store for a 4 wire 12 ga cord nope they did not have any so found a dryer cord 4 wire 10 ga well close enough. Even added a goose neck light wired into come on when the drill press comes on so one small win.
If anyone has one of these presses Delta/ Rockwell model (15.000) though it appears the 15.041 and 15.042 have the same variable speed control gearing and it is totally trashed I would like the gears if you do not need them and are not going to rebuild it. Also if you have old equipment like this you may wish to check your wiring too externally it may not look bad but as soon as I moved the wiring in the box you could hear the insulation cracking and see it falling off word to the wise.
