Low time lurker of the forum, however I also had a simple 3 car attached garage that was filled to the brim and very ugly.

About 18mo ago, my wife and I decided to look for a new home to accommodate our growing family (twin boys who'll be three end of December) and also to give us some more luxuries we didn't currently have.

Her requirement: walk-in pantry. My requirement: at least four garage spaces.

After not finding anything we liked for less than seven figures, we started looking into builders and looking for land. We found both: land in December of 12 and solidified our plans with our builder in February. We broke ground on April 29th, 2013.

Thus far, this isn't exactly 'my build', as my garage was built by the contractors. Next spring I plan on fully tackling the inside: walls, electrical, insulation, lift, cabinets, floor, etc.

Some pictures thus far:

First up, a pictures of my boys on groundbreaking day:

The house was well built before the garage was started. This is a view from upstairs of the future garage location:

After a bit of work by the graders and some serious stone:
IMG_6483_zpsb3f2d9d3.jpg

The surveyor offset the front and back stakes by a foot on each side. . . someone forgot to tell the concrete guy. This is what led to my 30ft depth - it was supposed to be 28ft. I didn't have to pay for anything. . . only issue was my roof trusses ended up being 2ft too short. Concrete paid for new trusses and I got a larger garage. In one day, all the walls were up - then the waiting game for new trusses:

Roof trusses were in and roofing went on. I opted for attic trusses over the two stalls and a cathedral/vaulted/scissors over the single stall - allowing me room for a full two post lift:

Not much else, buttoned up with siding, matching garage doors and exterior brick:

Finally was able to get the toy inside. As you can see, plenty of room! Not looking forward to snowblowing the driveway, however.

Great project you have on your hands. Had to comment about that excellent opening picture, and i've always been a fan of that model of Supra.

Where are you located?

I'm located in the town of Waukesha. HM Ford Taurus? Fan of DT? Shoot me a PM if you are, I have a little bit of history with DT through my father.

Thanks. I see you have VWs. Frequent vortex much? My first car was an 01 GTI VR6. Picked up a 92 Golf as a daily and turbocharged the VR. Sold the Golf in 2005 and the VR in 2007.

Yes sir, i've been a member a few years now, however i've been avoiding it lately. They are having major issues with the site. It keeps stalling, and or crashing every time i use it.

Nice dubs you had. Especially your "first car". That would have been a hoot!

Beautiful home, I'm also in waukesha. In fact the company I work for actually makes all of the signs and prints the blueprints for your builder... So chances are at one point your home came through my office.
Can't wait to see the progress, how did you like working with your builder? My fiancé and I are in the same boat trying to find a home we like in the area, everything is expensive or junk in the area unless you build new.

Building with Zach was pretty painless. It was the first home we built - I'd build again. No where near the horror stories you hear from some people. I suspect many people just can't dedicate the time to building or are piss poor communicators. I talked with our builder at least twice a week and was at the house every day, so if an issue came up, we sorted it out quickly and nothing really was allowed the chance to percolate.

I know of a nice 3bed/3garage stall house in Waukesha, if you're interested ;)

I love the layout, it's almost exactly (small tweak) what I want to build. Where did you get the plans for it? Are they available to purchase someplace?

I really like the high bay side of this. Especially since from the outside it just looks like a normal additional garage door. Interested to see you finish this side out and how the lift fits in there.

I have the same question for gravel fill/footings. I have the same elevation change challenge and figured the ONLY way I could build safely is to dig foundation and 4ft foundation walls? Here in MN.....

My builder did the plans. It's a very simple building.

I've gone back and forth, but it's probably just going to be insulated and drywall finished. Probably epoxy the floor and then call it a day.

Fill was probably about 3-4ft. I'm bad at eyeballing that sort of stuff. It's slab on grade. The brick on the front is actually 'tiled' on - they cut the face off of each brick, then put it up. It was my main cost overrun (that, and the gravel).

Might have to send me in the direction of that house. I'd love to see your car sometime to, looks nice

Car is being covered soon, just too dang cold to give it a once over with quick detailer before the cover goes on. Also need to head out and get some gas in it - looks like I'll have to use a gas can for that as they've already salted. I have another project that's just getting going - we're putting a 2jz into a '79 Volvo 242GT. Should be fun! I'll send a PM on the house.

Pan of the garage. Still need to pick up another car, then my long term project can begin (2jz into a '79 volvo 242GT). If the weather ever warms to near freezing, I'm also going to start pulling wire for outlets and lights.

Any suggestions on cabinets? Through searching, it looks like Saber cabinets are a good value for the quality you get. I'm meaning toward them at the moment.

Sorry for slow response. On the right side the ceiling is 10ft. Don't know the pitch-close to 7/12 though I think.

Here is an updated panorama:

Great looking place for sure.:thumbup:

But are you not worried about stone washing out from underneath and the floor cracking? That looks like a hell of a lot of stone with no retaining wall or foundation for things. And the stone doesn't appear to be compacted any either. Hopefully you won't have a problem, but if it were me, I'd be worried. :dunno:

My final grading fills all that in. I'll have to get a picture once they replace three junipers that didn't make it over the winter.

TJG - nice garage & place! Another Waukesha guy here...

Do you know how much compacting they did to the gravel fill? Looks like a lot of stone, and it's about the same amount of grade/leveling I need for my garage build in northern Wisconsin this summer. Any issues so far? Any shots looking at the back of the garage? I'm trying to talk myself into the idea that the back of my garage being 4' up in the air is not a bad thing appearance-wise!

Lots of WI folks in this thread...maybe meet up with a few of you in the future. I need to start my 'build' thread!

I'll post some pictures this weekend. I'm still in the process of finishing up some items as well as working on the red Supra, so the garage is an absolute mess right now!

I'll try to attach some pictures here from my phone that show the grading, updates inside and updates on the cars.

Soorry about that last one. One of my kids must have gotten my phone and changed the filters. I thought it looked dark when I took it!

TJG - awesome garage - thanks for sharing the details and pictures.

I'm just getting started building a 36x30 like yours, without the attic part and gable. Trying to explain the size and especially the vaulted roof to the wife is impossible - so your pictures helped!!

What lift did you buy? type etc and how do you like it?

Nice garage. Hope the fill was compacted properly. See my thread where mine was not. I'm dealing with it almost a year later with much hassle, attorney fees etc.

Hope it works out better for you than it did for me. BTW, I used to live in Brookfield and my kids were born at Waukesha Mem.

Glad I could be of help! The lift is a standard Rotary Lift SPOA10. I bought it used from Frank (use name Aahz) here on the boards. He owns/runs an equipment dealer business.

Is this what it looks like inside now? Man there were some details glossed over, that is fantastic!

I've put trim on the windows now, a couple more trim pieces this weekend and I'm calling it done! I'll take some more pictures and attach them. Still working on the Supras, hoping to get the red one running before winter. Trans came out of the black one last night and flywheel was sent to South Bend to be resurfaced and matched with my new clutch!

What sort of issues? The biggest issue I'm having with my house/garage (they were new construction and built at same time) is the lawn not coming in how I thought it would.

My kids are now 3.5yrs old and just started in the Waukesha Catholic school system, born over in Stallis though!
