I am in need of a new string trimmer and am considering a cordless one. I am already invested in the DeWalt 20V line of tools so would like to stay with that battery platform. I would consider the DeWalt 60v since those batteries are compatible, but that is a whole lot more expensive.

The issue I have is that I despise yard work so I tend to put it off as long as possible. Which means that when I do get into it the weeds are a lot thicker than they would be if I did it more often. The question is does the DeWalt 20V trimmer have the power to get through some fairly thick weeds? Is the 60V enough better to justify the cost? Or should I just get another gas trimmer.

I have 6 acres of land total but all but about 1 to 1 1/4 acre is in woods.

I have a medium sized lawn corner lot. I use the Dewalt 20 volt trimmer and while it isn't as powerful as a gas unit, it does alright. I do have a lot of problems with the string head. I should replace the head with another brand.

I've never had any power issues with my 922. I'm a shorter guy and its setup is fine for me, my taller brother is not a fan and does feel has to hunch over to use it. The only regret I have with not getting the 60 volt is being able to attach different tools. But I have cut through some pretty thick weeds and grass with 20v and no issues.

I have the 20v XR, i think it works great and get at least 30 minutes of hard use on the 5 AH battery. I haven't used my Stihl gasser since i got it.

Put on a bigger battery.
i have a 4.0 ah on it now...but id have to put a tractor battery on the thing to even get a sniff of a 50/50 weight balance..im thinking of returning to dewalt and just using my good old husky 326, which has awesome balance, a larger shield, and a strap. the dewalt guard is a joke

You're doing something wrong. Move the handle or put a bigger battery on it lol.

I have the 20v 920 XR brushless w/ an echo speed feed 400 head and it's handled any challenge. The low setting is more than adequate for any lawn and the high speed eats line while flinging debris at a speed where injury should be expected.

haha, you would have to mount the handle in front of the hinge..which would certainly be even more awkward. i strongly prefer dewalt products, so i ignored all the reviews talking about this issue and it was a mistake. its like using a shotgun with the barrels full of cement.

i probably should have not gotten the folding model..

Older thread but I am in the same boat needing a DeWalt 20V with the option to run a blade.

Is the 20v 920 XR still a good choice?

Thank you.

I posted a few years ago about my 20v dewalt. It only lasted about 1 1/2 summers. I let the smoke out of it. I got a dewalt 60 volt and have used it for probably 3 years with good results. The "head" is easy to restring, I only have one battery but I usually get at least 2 uses out of it before recharging. It is heavier in weight though.

I also had problems keeping the magic smoke in my DeWalt 20V trimmer. Died on my last summer and I haven't replaced it yet.

If you want to run a blade, you should have something more than 20V as you're going to be asking a lot from it. While I'm primarily DeWalt for cordless tools, I went with Ego for the OPE and have been very satisfied.

Okay, I am pretty hard on my 40V Ryobi with a blade attachment for years now and it is holding up.

The batteries on the other hand…
