Dewalt Miter saw question

I'm looking to upgrade to a Dewalt DW779 12" miter saw from my current DW713 10" saw.


I noticed some 12" blades have a 1" arbor while others have a 5/8" arbor. I can't even find the DW779 on Dewalt's site but I can find the DW780. The latter states 5/8" or 1" arbor.


Does anyone own or can you verify what size arbor is on the DW779 or does it include an adapter ?

Off topic but I've used the DW780, love the XPS shadow line. I believe the DW779 is upgradeable to it with a special handle/light kit. I even fitted Dewalt's XPS light onto my bosch miter saw.

Eric- I have a 20 year old CM 12" miter saw. It replaced a 10" saw. The larger blade makes a world of difference. You'll love the bigger saw

Per the manual, saw has a 5/8" arbor shaft. Use blades with either a 5/8" hole or a 1" hole with the arbor blade adapter (p/n 152636-00 item # 25 on the DeWalt ServiceNet site

The DWS780 uses the same blade adapter btw. Same 5/8" arbor on the same and use the blade adapter if you have a blade with a 1" arbor hole.

My DW708 has a 5/8" shaft. But I see that the current cordless 12" saws have 1" shafts.

Personally, I don't like any of these guides, laser or shadow. Lasers always have a fuzzy edge, and even the shadow looks like a snake that swallowed a dozen eggs, because of how the teeth stick out from the plate.

I suppose if you're framing it's a time saver, but when I'm using my miter saw, I'm using it for precision cuts where pencil lines are often too thick, so light guides just don't cut it.

One of my favorite features of a sliding miter saw is that I can pull out the saw and pivot it down while it's off, to precisely align the edge of a tooth against my cut mark.

I had a Cman years ago before it bite the dust. It had a laser on it and I never cared for it nor did I use it. I'm the same, blade down to mark to check before cutting.

That's part of what I said. Before the days of sliding saws, I had to use a square and draw my mark across the entire piece, because I never new exactly where the tooth would fall when the saw dropped. With a sliding saw, I can pull it out and reach the mark wherever it ends up. The difference is subtle, but significant for me.

The shadow system works extremely well and it's much much easier to hit your mark, lasers in comparison are useless.

I'd like to wait till I sell my 10" saw to help fund the new saw. Although, I don't have to, we just spent $1400 on a new washer/dryer so I'd like to allow the financial funds to build back up before I buy.

I was also considering waiting for Black Friday ads to come out and see if either HD or Lowes have them on sale.


A DW780 for less or the same cost as the DW779 with a free stand, I'd be all over that deal.

A little update. I waited for the BFads to come out. I compared HD to Lowe's. The latter will give an extra 10% military discount.

Both DWS779 saws come with a stand. The Lowe's stand is a folding four legged stand. HD free stand offer includes the one that has wheels and folds down like a dolley. No military discount.

So for the extra $40, I'll take the one with wheels from HD. Better yet .....

....the wife is going to buy it for me for Christmas. Sweet.

why not go with the 10in slider. I seriously doubt you will run into much it won’t cut with one pass. Not to mention blades are cheaper and saw is a little lighter

Most 10" saws can't cut 4x lumber in a single pass. Most also can't cut a 2x6 vertically. Every 12" saw I know of can do this.

As for blade price, it's a wash. Blade prices tend to follow blade circumference. Bigger blades cost a little bit more, but also due to a larger circumference, tend to last a little bit longer. My best educated guess is that the price per cut will work to to be the same in the end.

Still, 10" saws are lighter and take up less space in a work truck. If you're a mobile trim guy, then a 12" saw probably doesn't make sense as your primary saw (unless you're on a job that calls for huge crown moldings). For my stationary setup, I'm not bothered by the weight or space loss.

I have the non-sliding version if this saw. It has a 5/8" arbor with a little adapter piece to make it fit all of the universal blades. Though looking now, it looks like they're available in both a 5/8" and a 1" arbor. Seems odd.

Most of the newer 10in sliders on the market will cut 4x material in one pass. I guess If you were cutting true 4in material you may have an issue but typical dimensional lumber you will be fine. They also can usually cut 5 1/4 base vertical even though you maybe limited to only cutting on one side. What would be the purpose of cutting a 2x6 vertically? I tend to have several blades for my miter saw depending on what Im doing so blades cost can add up.

Miter adjustment is just easier and more accurate than bevel adjustment, and I've cut many a 1x6 and 2x6 vertically on a 45 for things like raised flower beds.

I'm not at all saying that 10" saws are incapable of most jobs or that 12" saws are inherently superior or the right choice. Just that I don't have anything against 12" saws.
