I'm beginning to lean towards a DeWALT 20v compact battery set. It will be used for carpentry. I might go back later and by the Milwaukee ratchet and impact for working on cars.

The compact battery set is to get you hooked on the sorry batterys. Milwaukee fuel.

Check to see who has the tools you need. We've had Dewalts at work since they started with the 14 volt stuff. Still using the 18 volt with no problems. I like the 18 volt grinder, great for a few cuts before battery dies. It saves time from getting a cord setup for a few cuts.
I bought Dewalt bare tools from Amazon around Christmas last year. They had a special on bare tools and a instant rebate too. Check their site for updates.
Don't forget Zoro tools, they should have their 30% off sale too.

It appers./////"appears" Dewalt is trying to appease the C.O.O. addicts by doing some stuff here. That may be appealing to some.
I have them all. More and more I'm drifting back to where this all started. Makita.
First you think: "kinda fugly and cheap lookin'". 5 years later you say "that ole thing is tough as hell".I like that.

Oooops. The answer to the OP's question.
Milwaukee. The warranty program answers that question quick.

Yellow. When I was apprenticing, that's all I ever saw and it stuck.

Milwaukee is everything Milwaukee tools has ever been. Just as tough and very well supported. DeWalt on the other hand is nothing like the Dewalt of a decade ago. I have a dozen yellow cordless drills and tools from then and used the hell out of them semi professionally. Now I fix their stuff and sister brands fairly often at work. Unless you specifically seek out top tier yellow you don't get too tier construction...and big orange or blue don't sell top tier.

Bottom line is buy what you like...I use Milwaukee at work now, tho I still use my yellows for construction and at home.

I've got a mix of all the majors. Milwaukee, Dewalt, Makita even some newer Ridgid power tools. Can't say any of them are bad. Used to do a lot of remodeling on the side and they all did well. In fact I love my Makita 1/2" drill so much I've jokingly said I'll die with it. I have to agree with Justme, get what you like.

I think DeWalt 20v is an excellent choice.

I was a DeWalt guy, back in the 90s. By the late 90s, they went through about a decade of pretty bad quality. Milwaukee went down too, but not nearly so bad, IMO.

Milwaukee was the first to recover and started making some really good stuff and the M series battery packs were a break through in battery product, IMO.

... these days, it seems as though DeWalt has *at least* caught up with Milwaukee in a few key areas. Milwaukee still leads with a few items but DeWalt seems to have the momentum.

Either way, I don't see how you could go wrong.

I own craftsman, father in law owns Makita, Dad owns Dewalt, and I've only tried display milwaukee stuff at HD.

The truth is, IMO, ya just about cant go wrong with any of them. I felt my craftsman were kinda cheap ($150 for driver, drill, bag, 2 batteries and charger). Not a fan of the drill really as it slips on drill bits sometimes, but I have used them in construction for the past year - inside and outside in the mud. They keep going.

I think Dewalt makes very powerful tools, although somewhat cheap-ish feeling. I own some Dewalt stuff and it gets its job done.

The milwaukee stuff that I do own is unimpressive - angle grinder, and vice grips.

When my craftsman kick the bucket I will undoubtedly go with Makita.

Best advice is to go to HD and put them all in your hand and pick which feels best. They will last the average home owner many years.
