Die grinder overhaul

I've collected a lot of die grinders over the years, most of them still kicking with authority. My favorite 90 degree grinder started making noise though, so I took the sioux apart. Besides the bearings which should be easy to find locally, the gears look chipped up. It's a nice enough grinder that I might actually source a replacement geared shaft.

While I had it apart, I decided to look inside the dotco I recently acquired (very used) and they're pretty similar.

The sioux seems to have more robust parts, but then again the sioux is the one that is broken so go figure. The dotco seems more finely machined and has a simpler mechanism with sealed bearings all around.

Anyways, just in case you were curious what your die grinder looks like when you take it apart and flush out all the gunk and dried grease:

If it did, I never used it. I just put oil in the airline like my other airtools

Thanks, I was able to find both of the parts listings. Hopefully parts are cheap. If the bearings are standard sizes I might be able to get them cheaper, but the gears will need to be ordered. Now that sioux is a snapon company, they may be easy to deal with.

I did, it's ugly. the gear set is 50 bux. I don't think I spent more than that when I bought it. I might just sell it for parts at this point, or look around for a used gear set in good shape.

Oh, bummer; maybe try calling one of the listed dealers and see if the parts are cheaper... you never know! :) I wonder if they have a flat repair fee; like snapon does?

Update, I finally gave in and took both ziplocs to the big tool repair place in portland. I just didn't have the patience to track down all the parts I needed. The Sioux was too far gone, it would have cost about 200 bux to replace all the shredded gear sets and bearings. They replaced the bearings and honed the valve body on the dotco for $60 bux, bringing a 300$ grinder back to life. If anyone needs some spare parts for a sioux grinder, let me know.
