I'm currently in school for Diesel Technology/Onsite Power Generation, we have folks that don't even finish school because they get hired on to killer jobs during their internships and just don't come back. If you're willing to move where the work is, there is a lot of money in it.
I'll have some pics posted next week of my current setup. Been learning what I need tool-wise over the last year or so. Pretty well set with 12pt sockets, 3/4" drive stuff, wrenches of all sizes, BIG snap ring pliers, all the impact stuff available, everything you can imagine for electrical diagnostics, and a lot of measurement tools (micrometers, calipers, t-bars, etc.)
I honestly love the work. It's 100x easier than automotive, since everything is built to pull out and rebuild.
I'm going for working on BIG stuff like gen-sets and trains, not just big trucks and equipment (which is still great to work on, besides dealing with tires).

Dodge610, No it's not, I don't work for waste management. I just happened to have one of their trucks for a few days and took a picture. This truck was much cleaner than most of the garbage trucks we get in. The tilt bed did not work, it would have saved me some time!!

pic was taken back around '97 at the last dealership i worked at.
hidden behind me is another SO roller, and a mac side box on top of it.
the CM double bank, set of matco 900's with 2 side boxes belong to the other guy in the rebuild room i worked with. we ran out of wall space for his 2nd set of matco 900's, they got put along another wall

Crew chief what was the reasoning behind a few smaller boxes instead of one big box I've seen you mention it in other threads love ths snap on stack by the way I'd love to have one for work. Have you ever had an issue with the friction slides

ive replaced 1 set of slides in that box since i bought it new in '86.
that drawer was filled with pullers, puller parts ect. the slide wasnt worn, one of the clips had broken, the drawer would pull out, and leave the slide inside the box.
the smaller boxes are easier to move around, and adapt to the space available, from what i recall the only bigger box that was around when i bought those in '86 was snapon's taco cart, and i never cared for the design of the box, especially being used in a crowded shop, where sometimes the box is up against a wall and doesnt get moved.
i moved all those boxes (and several more) cross country in a uhaul
loaded and unloaded them by myself, i couldnt see doing that with a double or triple bank. i transported the kr555/550 in the back of an '85 bronco to my 1st job after i moved..
What's the number and size of that box?
Its just a double bank tech series box (MB 1000A) with an add on side cabinet and an extra set of castors
I never seen a box on blocks like that. What is the purpose of having your box on wood blocks vs. just sitting on the floor if you don't mind me asking?
As Joe said its all about height.Im 6'1" and when standing at the box the bottom edge of hutch door ( open) was at my forehead and its was irritating when I would be working on something.
I was apprehensive about doing it at first but I made sure it wouldnt roll off or crush the 6 x 6 blocks by setting two steel I-beam sections and welded flat stock at the ends.
That's what I was thinking, I just wasn't sure.maybe it's the angle of the pictures that made it look bigger than mine.

Packt, are the plastic socket trays you have the ones with the measurements on the top of the post? I have ones that look similar but the hex part of the socket goes against the bottom of the tray so the measurement sticks out the square end.

I only do diesel stuff here and there and I would hate having a white box... I like my black box, hides all the greasy booger hook marks.

And to beleive I used to work out of the top and bottom craftsman that's sitting on top of the box! currently the box on top of the snappy is gone. I bought and used a bunch of plastic trays to organize more. Plus the westling socket trays helped big time.
How bout we share a little of what we work on? right now i'm with a construction company that also doubles a dumpster rental service. We got a 2007 international 4300, a 92 cab over mack. A pete tractor, pete tri axle, mack tri axle, 6 chevy duramax pick ups, 7 excavators both big and small volvo, cat, jcb and case., 2 cat dozers, 2 back hoes, 3 front end loaders, a john deere 544h, cat 950g and cat 938. A couple of rollers, and 3 bobcats. how about the rest of you guys!

I'm changing careers. I've been a bicycle mechanic for over 10 years and I'm now in my second year of a diesel tech associate's degree program. I went with a Snap-On Classic 60 from the student discount program and I'm trying to fill it with all the tools I can afford, since the 40-50% discount will vanish after school is over.
I know the box will be too small before long. The plan is to add a top box, fill that, then when I outgrow this setup I'll get a bigger box for work and put the Classic 60 boxes in the garage at home.
I did an internship at a passenger coach line, then took a semester off school and now I'm back at it and trying to figure out where to work.

I don't know if its kosher to link other forums but if you happen to google a "heavy equipment forum" kind of place, there is a shop talk sub forum with several threads that some guys update regularly with pics from a few cat dealers and the like. Its pretty interesting if your interested in that kind of stuff.

Nice box FunkyfullWidth!! The green and black trim looks really good. I have the same craftsman setup(not a bad deal for $700) and have outgrown it quickly. I am debating on getting a KRL1033 or possibly an epic. Your pic really puts it into perspective.

To AJH, the new SO road chest measure up perfect for the the classic 60. Some day I want to get one for my classic 60, but since I have a kra 62 already, I'm having a hard time justifing.

The construction place I work at has over a thousand pieces of equipment. Not gonna name them all. All I work on is trucks though and we have got 4 macks, 16 Freightliners, 3 western stars, 2 international's, 2 sterlings, couple Pete's.

I have been in the shop I am in now for 2 days and have worked on two CAT loaders, a
CAT 345D excavator, and a CAT paver. We have about 30 Peterbilts on the lot and about 200 pieces of CAT and John Deere equipment (They are a construction and gravel hauling company)
