Clarification for Wizard:

The meter box is on the outside of the detached garage and the 2 panels are in the detached garage. The breaker panel containing only the 200 amp disconnect feeds the house, the other panel is for the garage (which is where both those panels are).

The OP got lucky because the electrician used a 200 breaker panel as the disconnect for the house feeder rather than a more simple 200 amp switch enclosure. Now the OP can feed his house from the detached garage using an interlock kit.

Have a similar service setup only I have a regular 200 AMP switch on the feeder. I have a 200 amp 40 space panel I'm going to swap out in it's place now so I can feed my mobile from the detached garage.

All thanks to this thread! That's a perfect solution to my dilemma.

Wizard- u are the one who is incorrect.

The panel with the 200a breaker and lugs is for the house feed.

The OP knows what he is talking about here.

Yep, I am 180 out of phase.

I still think a 40 space load center as a "disconnect" is ridiculous !

This one box would replace the the current meter base and that 30 space house disconnect.

The interlock would be placed inside the house on its load center

Sure would. But it also costs a hell of a lot more plus you gotta buy the breaker. Plus he's trying to leave the genny in the garage are instead of dragging it out by the house. Your box does NOT allow what he wants to do.

Just because he uses it as a disco doesn't mean that he can't use some of the panel in the future.
Oh yeah also your box turns the garage panel into a sub panel as well increasing conductor count and size.

So did I until you look at cost and availability and versatility. A standard load panel is a lot easier to finish around since they are designed for use in walls that will be finished and allows the breakers to be inside the structure rather than outside....clever vandals like outdoor breakers.

Yeah but the way it's setup is a lot easier and a lot less expensive plus he can leave the generator in the detached garage! No dragging it out by the house and a lot less noise!

Easier, yes. Less Expensive ???

It had better be a detached garage if he plans on running the generator inside of it. CO can seep from an attached garage into a house.

yep for the third time its a detached garage and i bought the place like this so i didn't spend any money on anything related to the original wiring. i wouldn't even run a gen-set in a detached garage just due to the smell, but maybe i should to kill all mice in there?

thank you all for the ideas and hopefully i can get someone out to the house in the near future and get this all set up. summer thunderstorm season is right around the corner.

Even if it was an attached garage the generator wouldnt be inside the garage. Thats why they have cords for them. The gen plug should be put outside next to the meter.

Easiest thing to do is look for an interlock kit that uses the breaker on top left, which i havent seen to many. Otherwise you just need to move the two wires down like was posted and put new breaker in, probably 45 minutes worth of work for everything

Hi fatkidracer,

I just bought a house with the exact same panel and configuration. Can you share how you eventually solved your generator installation? I am currently pursuing an interlock and input box, however, the interlock is not readily available for the combo box. Any update is appreciated.

Thank you,
