Hey guys! It's pipe dimple time!

Ok, Iv'e freed up some time to get this project done. Time to rock n roll.:rocker:

I shall start with the 1/2'' Pipe Die.

The actual size is 0.89'' . I will make it .01'' smaller (0.88 )for ease of sliding it thru the hole. The thread is 7/16-20. Which ***** , because all the blanks I made from the regular size run have a 1/2'' hole in them......

On which Die should I make the thread, top or bottom?

I made two individual dies (not nearly as nice as yours) and I put the thread on the male part. I looked at a couple of the commercial ones and of those that had threads, they were all in the male part.

Why don't you go to their website and try to order one and see what happens. Here's the link
http://www.harborfreight.com/hydraulic-punch-driver-kit-96718.html

This is the link for the 3" punch
http://www.harborfreight.com/3-inch-knockout-punch-and-die-set-96796.html

This is for manual set ( you need it to get the 1/2" die http://www.harborfreight.com/knockout-punch-kit-91201.html

Can you make a 1/2" knockout punch die for the harbor freight hydraulic punch driver set?

Also since your selling the pipe ones in cold rolled steel, can you get them hardened? And how much would that be for the set?

So there is only Tapping the 3/4-16 threads in the tops of the big Dies and 20mm for Sarel's Dies left to be done on the 6 piece Pipe sets.I will be shipping on Monday.

I also made some bigger standard size dimples.
I can now offer 2.25'' and 2.5'' in stock and am making some 2.0'' now.
I am also going to make the 3.0'' pipe as well as the standard 2 3/4'' , 3.0'' , 3.25'' and 3.5''

As far as tempered top dies goes. I just haven't had time to look into it yet.
I am in production mode until I get all of these done.
I will catch up to my PM's and my life when I get there. I am an army of one.

Thank's to all the guys who put there trust in me and pre paid for some sets.
You will get to play with them soon.

You can buy the 1/2" die in another HF set and it will work with the hydraulic set - I've tried it. http://www.harborfreight.com/knockout-punch-kit-91201.html

You can also buy a 3" die http://www.harborfreight.com/knockout-punch-kit-91201.html

Ok so call me a dummy but, how would a person use these die? Do you use them in a press just to dimple the rim of the hole for strength? Or does it punch the hole and dimple at the same time? In otherwords do you have to make the hole first with something else. Dont get me wrong I know what they are for, because I would like to make lightening holes in my frame boxing plates. Just curious if it would be in my interest to get some but, my press is only a manual 20T. Or would that be enough. I generally dont work with much more than 1/4" plate.

You have to have a hole in the metal first then the dimple die flanges the hole for more strength. The holes are put in with either hole saws or with punches. I am getting the pipe size dies so I can use them with the HF hydraulic punch set. Search the HF site for "knockout punches". There is tons of discussion earlier on in the thread.

Nope, cold-rolled low-carbon steel can not be hardened via quenching. Not enough carbon in the steel to do that.

Case-hardening or nitriding could be done, but those only make a hard surface layer on the steel a few thousanths of an inch deep. Good for things that need a hard surface layer, but not really what you would want for a press die.

Claude said he's making the dies out of C12L14, which is a low-carbon leaded, resulphurized, and rephosphorized cold-rolled 'free-machining' steel used for screw-machines and its good machining and surface-finsh properties, not for hardness or high-strength applications.

Want the dies to be hardened? You need to use a hardenable steel alloy in order to do that. C12L14 ain't. Claude said he was trying some other steel alloys, but cost of the metal and machining were some 'issues'.

Couple days late, but shipping out Wednesday morning!:rocker:
I still have 14 sets in stock.
Worked all weekend and made all those other sizes too.
I'll post them up when I get a chance.

Thank's for your patience guys, I think it was worth the wait.

A good thing is, I have a huge selection of Dimple Dies to make projects for myself and others now.
I want to see your dimple projects. I'll post mine when I get time to play a little.

The first person who completes a project with the dies should start a thread called "Show me your Dimple Die projects using Claude's dies" and we can all add to it. If you also post on the HAMB or one of the off-road forums you should talk up Claude's dies and help him generate some business. Those guys are always interested in this type of thing.

Ok, so here is what is now available for you guys.

The 6 piece 1/2'' to 1 3/4'' set has now grown to 13 different sizes, in 1/4'' increments. Up to 3.5'' diameter.
They will be on the Virages web site this week.

I checked at the store and they do have them on sale for $79 no coupon needed so you can use the 20% off one. I also found out that online they have it for $74.95 plus a flat rate shipping of $6.99. I have not found an online 20% coupon yet but at least if someone wants one and they are not close to a HF, they can at least order one and save a few bucks. :rocker:

Thank's Jim, the latest pics of the Dies were taken before they were 100% complete. I have to make a proper photo shoot to put up on here and on the Club Virages web site.

Nastyzen, what is the price going to be for the 13 piece pipe set?

The pipe set is 6pcs. From 1/2'' to 2.0'' and the 3.0'' pipe size is separate.

The standard set is also 6pcs and goes from 1/2'' to 1 3/4''. The other 7 pcs are separate and they go from 2.0'' thru 3 1/2'' in 1/4'' increments.
I should have time to figure it out later this week and put them up for sale on the web site.
I'm thinking there will be the small set, a big set and individual pricing.

Hey guys, found this thread during an internet trawl looking for dies. Will be ordering a set when I get paid, assuming they can be shipped to Australia... Claude, can you please confirm this?

Also, thought I'd try and help Claude out by posting this in another forum I use as there are a number of fabricators who might be looking for a set. http://www.nissansilvia.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=518797

^^^^ Good writeup MoonRise & fantastic workmanship Claude.

Tapered Roller Bearings are turned from low carbon steel, for ease of screw machine or CNC turning.
Before laser marking, they were stamped & chamfered, prior to entering HT operations.
Then "green stock" went into a electric fired carburize furnace for approx. 4 hour cycle @ +1700 degrees, and then quickly quenched in oil. (the case hardened wear layer was 1/32" wall thickness)
Finally went through a hardening furnace (quench again) and then a tempering furnace (stress relieve), to remove the steel brittleness (of induced carbon deposit) while maintaining the wear resistance.
Steel shot wheelibrate to clean up (product now called hard stock) and off to finish grind operations.
Induction skin hardening, is also another expensive process, that can replace the old Brg. Mfg. method.

Hey thank you Matt for spreading the word!:thumbup:Much appreciate.
I checked for someone else from your side of the planet for a small set 7kg. Most economical was about 100 bucks transport....
PM me, if you would like more details.
Thank's again.

Any chance you'd make them NOT out of cold rolled... ?

I have a standard set already, and would be interested in the Pipe size set but not in Cold Rolled.

That still makes them about $300 cheaper than anything else I can get, so I will contact you next week when I have been paid.

Thanks
