Well my friend had a Virus attack his heart......but is feeling much better now.
Of all the places the bug could of settled at,it went right for the important one!

Anyhow, I sent some parts to the zinc plater's and sent a Dimple Die to see how it would look.

Here it is.

quick question, when ive use my dimple dies on sheet metal, the sheet metal tends to curve.... am i pressing the dies too hard? how do i know when ive applied enough pressure?

I assume you are talking about the initial deformation or dishing that occurs when dimpling sheet.
If this is the case, usually as you initiate the dimple, the sheet will have a tendency to dish . But as you increase pressure, the sheet will want to become flat again. This dishing is worse the thicker the sheet and you may have to ether hammer or press the dimple from the flared out side.
Make a few practice tries with some offcuts to determine how much pressure you need to get it flat again without printing the die into the sheet.
I'll have to make a pictorial 'how to' post to demonstrate this.

BTW ,how thick of sheet are you using? A picture would be nice to be able to determine exactly what is going wrong with your project.

Hope this helped a little.

Yay!!! The first set landed last week (second set is still in the hands of USPS/Aus Post). Thanks to Nastyzen, and a huge thank you to Fordman7795 for going above and beyond to help me get hold of them. Thanks guys, your help is much appreciated.

Out of the box, first impressions: Machine finish is good, and the paperwork that accompanied them is a professional touch. Well oiled before being packed, so no rust/corrosion when they landed on the other side of the world. Pretty happy with them on first impressions.

Havent tried them out yet, will post up something when I have.

That's awesome that they made it to your part of the Hemisphere Adam!
I can't wait to see what you shall Dimple.
Glad they didn't rust on the way there, Mine have started a little. I think I will have all the inventory I have zinc plated. But first I have to thread all of them for the HF hole punch kit.
I got the bigger threading attachment for my cnc lathe a while back, so that should be easier to perform.
My oldest son has been giving me a hand in the shop since High School has been out. We should have the backlog taken care of sometime next week.....
But now he's off to the Yukon for six weeks this Sunday....

Has anyone else had the time to Dimple something? Who shall be first to post?
I have all kinds of projects in mind, but just haven't had the time to produce anything yet with all the regular jobs and rush jobs being dumped on me.

Cheers everyone!

I'm new to this site and kind of to the dimple die stuff also, so I'm trying to learn more before buying a hole punch set.

NASTYZEN, looks like some great work you are doing with making these dies and I do plan on ordering them, probably all the sizes.

My question is, will this 15 Ton 4" Hydraulic Knockout Punch Driver Kit have most of the right size punches that I will need for the standard sizes you make? It sure looks like it does the way I read it?

I know I would have to buy other punches that this kit does not have to work with all your dies.

Thanks, Scott

Buy this one from Harbor Freight http://www.harborfreight.com/hydraulic-punch-driver-kit-96718.html It's less than 1/2 the cost on sale for $90. If you want a 1/2" punch you have to also buy the manual knockout set http://www.harborfreight.com/knockout-punch-kit-91201.html on sale for $15

Hello Scott,
First knockout kit I've seen with standard hole sizes. They usually make pipe sized holes.
Looks like those are actual hole sizes, therefore you would need the standard hole sized Dimple Dies.
I don't think the pipe sized Dimples would work with this kit, unless you get other cutting dies.
I am soon going to take care of plating all the Dimples I have before I start shipping them out.

Corresponding Size:
Actual Hole Size
Dies & Punches Size

First mistake this year - right? I still haven't made anything with my dies but I'll be mounting my radiator soon and that should present an opportunity. I'll post pictures when I do assuming it comes out looking OK.

Yes, its covered further back in the thread, something to do with the properties of the stock they are made from. One of the sets I bought to Aus has been case hardened. Dont believe my mate has used them as yet since this was done. He lurks here, maybe he'd like to throw his two cents worth in.

A big thank you to the last couple of guys who ordered kits!
Hope they found you well.

Now come on people, show us what you've all been dimpling.

I should be able to get to finishing up all the other sizes next week sometime and I'll send everything off to get Zinc plated.

I'm thinking that I will send a freebee to the guy who has the coolest Dimple project to show. How's that for motivation.:pimpflash

If there's a prize at the end of it, maybe run a seperate thread? My money is on Jim being able to come up with something way cooler than the first couple of projects I have lined up for mine...

On a seperate note, any idea when the larger sizes of the std's will be available for purchase, you'll need to organise passports for a couple of sets

Your Zinc plating, what thickness are you aiming for and is it for protection or lubrication? I have a Zinc passivization plant (yellow chromate) and am considering to plate mine.

Sorry the response took a while, I went camping for a couple of days to get away from the insanity....
Good idea Adam,I guess I should start a Dimple projects thread soon.
I should be good to put up all the dies I made a while back for early Sept.

Sarel, the Die I had Zinc plated was done according to the PPS.6.2.18 standard like all the aviation stuff I get done. So light that it's barely measurable.
These Dies will sit around a lot more than work. The main reason for me to get them plated is so they stay presentable. Some of the ones I have sitting on my work table have started to get an ever so slight surface rust from the intense humidity this summer. I don't want to piss off anyone who lays out the bills to get them for them to get a new rusty Die set.
I sent a couple of other Dies to get White Zinc and Nickel coated this week.
I'll be testing for wear and looks when I get them back and post the results.
Then will see witch finish suits them best before sending a couple hundred pounds of them out.

On a different note. I wish to thank Ryan for tolerating me on this forum. I have just about covered my material costs so far on these things and I am really grateful I haven't been kicked for spamming. My intention was to help out all the members who wanted to Dimple.( for sure, making a few bucks along the way can't hurt)
AS well, I would like to thank the mod's for also tolerating me and doing a great job of weeding out the real spammers from this thread.

Thank's all

Claude.

Just saw this thread for the first time. My favorite project with dimple dies was my 08 Jeep Jk Teraflex side steps. I made 2 traction plates for the steps out of Stainless steel. The holes are 3/4"

Yes I meant you Alan, but I typed Adam...
Another question while I'm at it. Does your plate tend to trap dirt? Or do you have some way for it to run out?

The name spelling is fine. I have been called worse:thumbup:

Never had any trouble with dirt collecting though i am not a serious off road guy with a new vehicle. Was concerned this might be a problem but never saw accumulation of anything under the plate. I think a spacer might be needed if someone was always entering the vehicle with muddy boots.
I have since sold off the Jeep go go back to a truck. The 3.8l was a dog. Love my V8 in the truck.

Hey guys, just got my test Dimples back from the platers.
So wadaya all think? On the left Yellow zinc, in the middle, Nickel ( but forget it at $15.00 bucks each!!) and Clear zinc on the right.
Please give me some feedback on your preferences before I send them all out to get plated.

i like the nickle but that kinda defeats the idea of an affordable dimple set. yellow works for me just fine too. one of these days i'll make it to a hf and get the punch set so i can use mine. lol

Just a couple of questions, why can't the dimple dies be made out of O-1 (oil hardening) as the price difference isn't that much different for 3' or 6' lengths. I know that sending them to a heat treat facility would change the prices some.

Are the dimple dies made for a certain thickness of material as a standard die? By that I mean do you make them all for a specific thickness say like .050 material thickness? Don't take me wrong, I'm not trying to sound like a smartass, or dispute what you do, but I know that different material thicknesses would change the radius slightly, either on the punch or on the die.

Ouch!!!!! Too late to backup now. Are you certain that you don't have them backed up? A lot of programs will automatically backup every few minutes (something like 15 minutes or less) so you may still have them in there.

What you may want to do is go down to your "Start" button, then "Search" and type in the name that you saved them under. Chances are they are hiding in there somewhere.

Good luck and keeping fingers crossed for ya.

Would you believe I back up my **** on a usb key, on an external HD and every so often also make a copy on the house computer....
I always have 2 HD's on my computers. One for the OP system and installed programs and one for data and that's the one I backup.
When I work on stuff a lot I make a shortcut to the desktop. In this case I guess I dragged the whole file over to the desktop......!!oooooooooooooo
When I look at some of the programs I printed out it's right there, printed on top ( File name, path , C:\...Dimple Dies\blah blah..................

I could be such an Idiot at times...

If I'm lucky, I still have some in the lathe.

All is not lost though, I still have the original hand drawn drawing with the important info and a few programs I printed out with feeds n speeds of which all the other sizes were based on.
I also have lots of dies to measure from.........
When I run out of inventory, I'll just have to sit down and re type programs for all the different sizes again.

Most French Canadian or Quebecois cursing comes from the Catholic Religion.
Tabernacle = Tabarnak theres Calisse and criss also ostie to name a few.
The great thing about the French language is that you can conjugate all of the above with each other and in any order and still get a good sacre. Best of all you can conjugate these with the particular object that you are sacring about. Of course throwing peoples names and saints helps in creating one long and satisfying sacre.

I'd be happy with them in either of the zinc passivates. I like the nickel plated version best but its not really cost effective. If you had that done here it would be charged out per thou of plating thickness, very crudely calculated over the surface area (the company I use are electroplaters, not mathematicians ).
