Are you going to do any permanent A/C or Heat in the shop? I noticed earlier you mentioned you had some temp heat.

I have been getting lots of quotes for mine, but they are all north of 12k. I can't convince them this is a shop and not a house.

Thanks,

-Eric

I plan to install a full system eventually with minimal duct work. My neighbor has an a/c business and says he will do if for cost if I do all the ***** work and build him a driveway gate. Even the cost he has hinted at is more then I'd rather spend for a shop.

I do mostly wood work in mine and think I will just put in a wood burning stove and insulate well. Just burn up all my scraps.

I'd spend 5k, but not 12.

HOw about a ductless system? probably be $2-3K and you'll get a heat source if needed.

Those giving me estimates are saying a shop that size would need multiple head units and would not work as well as central heat and air. I am still looking for someone who would do it.

I only have my ceiling insulated right now and it really doesn't get all that cold in there. I've only used the heater when I needed paint to cure and other then that I haven't even turn it on. Last year when the soffit vents were letting in cold air and any heat I had was flowing right out the ridge vent it was pretty dang cold. Now a/c on the other hand is what I'm looking forward to!

Good to know. I am hoping to insulate in the next few months. I need to finish up all wring and then want to run air lines and ducting for my dust collector.

After I insulate, I'll assess how bad I need heat and A/C. Also, being from Texas, I may only need A/C.

find a local HVAC guy that will keep your number handy if he does a full replacement of a decent unit. Probably pick up the equipment for $500 or so and pay him to install it. Or a mobile home furnace...

It's colder up here so I plan on a hanging shop furnace since I have natural gas.

Heck, check Craig's list for an HVAC guy. I found one who runs commercial property systems by day and evenings and weekends is building his client list prior to shifting full time. He was great!

A hundred bucks found an error in my wiring that the regular HVAC "Pros" couldn't or wouldn't.

Also, you can install a mini-split. It's not that tough, they are pre-charged, connect and go. As efficient as having it vacuumed etc, nope, will it be 95%? Probably. An electrician for the disconnect and you're off to the races.

Probably 2k for the equipment. Multiple heads are great and readily available, also much more efficient than central systems which strive to get to 19 seer, mini's are often 23. Another significant benefit is the ability to de-hydrate the space, keeping the humidity down is, in my mind, reason enough, DIY!

Great build... I might have missed it but how much head room do you have in your loft and how wide is it??? ve been tossing around the idea of a loft with room for a "man cave" in the shop I'm building just worry about usable space... I'm toying with 28' by 32' for my shop with 12' walls and a 10/12 roof...

Thanks for the ladder picture.

I also use your method when painting multiple items by hanging them off a line. When the guys were here putting new shingles on my roof , I had the metal front porch railing hanging from the clothesline post so I could do everything at once. He had never thought about it but I feel he was going to steal that idea.

Yeah just regular 3/4" #2 solid oak tongue and grove flooring nailed and glued to plywood. Its 2 layers of 5/8" plywood staggered to make up 9' of length. The trim around the outer edge is 1"x3" (actual 3/4"x2 1/2") routed with a 3/8" round bit top and bottom. I have about $100 in the top, a butcher block top would have been a lot more money.

Thanks for the info! I may just steal this idea because I have lots of extra 3/4" oak T&G leftover from my wood floor install in my last house. We just poured the garage floor on my new house so I'm anxious to get in there and start building my shop space finally. I think your bench top looks great! Thanks.

Below is a picture of the recent pouring of our garage floor. It's 24'x36' three bay.

Insulation and walls finished only lack a little trim work.

I wanted a sign for my shop and saw a few on here that sparked some ideas. I like the way it turned out. It was cheap to make since I had the wood and paint already. The only thing I had to buy was 2 strands of lights from target. I used the left over 1/2 sheet of plywood from the bench top build.

The plan

We cut it out with a jigsaw and glued it together.

Next was drilling holes to add light

Then I stained the edges, painted with red oxide primer, and painted 2 coats of the same blue paint I used on the cabinets. After the blue dried I scraped the edges with a paint scraper. After that I added a very light brushed dark green on the letters and border. Lastly I lightly painted the back ground white with the blue still peaking through some.

Then put the lights in. I really like how it came out.

Update: I installed 2 liftmaster 8500's and when the wife heard how quiet and smooth they were she said we needed to buy some for the house garage. I love the garage door openers!

Next project was getting some climate control before the summer heat shows up.
I ended up with a scratch and dent 4 ton, heat pump, split system for an excellent price. It's a little big for the square footage but it will not run all the time and I was more concerned about being able to bringing the temp down quickly when I do want it on. I installed a wifi thermostat so I can turn it on or off from my phone if I plan on working out there when I get off work I can turn it on before I get home. Very simple duct work design which I used duct board to build. The air handler is mounted in my utility closet with one vent and one return. Pic was before the lines were soldered in and I also added a p-trap to the drain since the pic.

It all blends in with the wall stuff good enough9983510582225959eff1efa625fc0922.jpg

Now I'm ready for some really hot days to see how well this works for me.

would it be possible to see some close up pictures of the sliding gate and get a description of how it works? I am putting a fence around our yard and need a 16' wide gate for access to a detached garage. I would like to build a sliding system, but would like some ideas on how do it.

Wow this shop turned out great. Have you decided if you were going to paint the walls? I have my doubts about making OSB look good with paint.

I will not be painting the OSB. I think it would look bad painted and show more defects. The natural camo helps hide a lot!

Great looking build, love the way it all came together. Any plans for a lift with all that ceiling height?

I was planning on buying a 2 post. I have the ceiling height, slab thickness and electrical ready but I'm not ready to give up the space. It's on the back burner for now and untill I really have a lot of use for it I just can't justify buying one.
