I am looking into this approach for building an auto-drain for my 80 gal 5hp Dewalt compressor.

Here is the listing for the electronic solenoid valve:
.....Two options for solenoid valve:
.....Affordable Baomain Part ($14.79) - http://amzn.to/2EGY4Xn
.....More Industrial ASCO Red Hat Part ($36.99) - http://ebay.to/2Eh3pa5

The two solenoids listed above both have a max pressure of 145psi

I can't seem to find any listing for one with 175psi capability.

Any info on a 220v solenoid with 175+ psi rating would be helpful.

or

Does anyone have experience using one of these lower rated valves on a typical 5hp 2-stage 175psi compressor?

Thanks
Todd

The ASCO Red Hat are very high quality valves, we used them at the shop for years until switching to SMC.

If you don't put a strainer before your solenoid you are going to get frustrated. I don't know why you would DIY this when ready made timed units can be had for under $50.

I want to do an automatic drain as well.

I have been thinking on the Tsunami Moisture Minder Automatic Piston Air Tank Drain w/ External Reservoir (250 PSI). No power required.

I drain mine maybe once or twice a year. It usually has a a pint or so of water and oil.

Have this 230v valve on my compressor, connected to the motor lead side of the starter so it only activates when the motor runs. It's set to the lowest setting and will bleed off 3-4 times on each compressor cycle.

Might consider the Harbor Freight one? Worked good but the plastic tubing is weak and I replaced it with HD truck air line.
Water Drain for Tank
Only $10 and works well for me. It's not on a timer and just drains the water using pressure differences. So when the compressor kicks on it blasts a jet of air out the water drain. All manual so no wires or electrical complications.
