how are you getting the roof trusses and perlins up by your self? I'm doing the exact same size and have the pad done. just waiting to get the cash to do the shop. Haven't decided on metal or stick build and since most work will be done by me I was wondering about the build methods?

First thing is, I poured the concrete with the plans and specs to match. all the anchor bolts set in place when I poured.

When the building actually arrived, I rented a Forklift (around $200 a day). set the beams up, and F.L. the trusses. the center I had to prebuild, then lift into place, only took one day to do that. the rest was pure muscle. the perlins were heavy but I just lifted one side at a time into place.

I went with steel because of the hight restrictions in my area and it is easy to bolt together . you will need some special tools like a Milwaukee screwdriver with a clutch and a panel cutter but for your air hammer. but most everything else is common tools, also don't forget scaffolding.

But like I said I have done it by my self. in about two months so far. and should be done in a week or two.

Good luck,

Nice work but, I don't think you will be getting neighbor love!!!!

Maybe not, but it might ease the tension when I offer to change the oil on there cars, and they would be happy to "donate" less then the lube shops cost.
Besides the one neighbor to the east poured the concrete. and the other one to the west, I watch his dogs when he goes on vacation. and that is the only two neighbors I have. I will not be getting midnight surprises any time soon.

I feel bad for the neighbors of you guys that say "if my neighbor doesn't like it he can sell". Well no he cant' because no one will want to buy his house with something like that next to it. Would you guys be happy if your neighbor decided to paint his house bright pink and yellow when all the other house in the neighbor hood are brick? Try selling your house with an eyesore next door.

Try living in San Francisco where I grew up and my parents live. Every third house is Pink, or bright green or purple or yellow. All owned by Chinese who paint them that color for God knows what reason. They think it is good luck or looks good but it ruins the entire look of the neighborhood.

In my neighbrohood, plenty of people have build new McMansion amongst older 1950's ranch homes and they all look way too big and not fitting in at all. I have to agree that this garage would cause me concern if it was next to me. A little smaller and made of wood or stucco and it would be a different matter.

Your garage is so disproportionally large for the lot it is just beautiful!!!!

Do your neighbors still talk to you........without profanity?

Hey, you have a great garage and something I hope to build in the near future myself. However, I have to concur with tdkkart in regard to the impact your building has on the neighborhood and how it will ultimately affect the property values...including yours. It looks like you live in a very nice neighborhood where everyone takes pride in their home. But, anytime you build a structure in a neighborhood that does not conform with the existing homes, you essentially degrade the value and character of the existing neighborhood......regardless of the building code.

A neighbor of mine recently built a huge white two-story metal garage in our all brick single-story neighborhood. It looks terrible and is an absolute eyesore.....not to mention that it's about all I see when I look out my back window. Although it meets the liberal code for our small, formally rural town, it has essentially ruined the character of a beautiful neighborhood. Most everyone in the neighborhood feels that it has negatively impacted the value of our homes.

When I build my dream garage, I want to practice what I preach......especially since I have a corner lot that is very visible to the surrounding homes. Although I know that I can't possibly please everyone, I will certainly make my neighbor's aware of what I plan to build and listen to their input. I want to do everything I can to minimize any impact my building might have on others. I've already decided that I must brick the building and want it to match the house and look like it was build at the same time the house was.....matching the scale and style of my existing home, although that will end up costing me more for construction and limit the ceiling height, etc. However, my dream will hopefully not become someone else's eyesore and will improve the neighborhood instead of hurting it.

Just my two cents worth for anyone planning a new shop or garage. :)

How about this......it's his land, he can do what he wants on it. :spit: What a concept. :lol_hitti:shocking::shocking::shocking::shocking:

If he wants to build a swimming pool shaped like a body part, or paint his house green with pink dots, that's his house, and his property. If everyone wants "property values", go live in a Nazi HOA. :wtf:

Better yet we need HOA and whole streets for automotive enthusiasts.
Bylaw #1. Have as big a garage as you want.

I have two enthusiasts on both sides of me, I'm very fortunate, beers get passed over the fence, we borrow each others tools, Holy **** we're neighborly.

In the OP case there probably just angered by all the trucks an heavy machines and workers around. My advice get a mess of beer a big piece of meat toss it on a fire and invite them over. They'll warm up quick.

Oh and Cool board lurking for a while.

Thanks to everyone for all the comments, and to you Ward Spose, I'm glad I could be your first (Posting).

BTW... it will be punch and cookies for the neighbors, I'm in Utah!!!...
...Beer and Steaks in a week, for the friends.

All the neighbors are jealous, not mad. I am well known in the neighborhood and well liked by most. also verry respected by many for what I have done in the neighborhood, and for the neighbors. I tried my hand at self employment, and yes, did not succeed, and that alone earned respect for giving effort where most fear to leave the comfort of others employment.
They had thier chance to voice their opinion at the city council meeting, and no one showed. that was the time to ***** about it. they all got a notice in the mail, so they cant say they didn't know, and if you are that concerned about it you should go to every city council and planning meeting.
had a friend/appraiser look at it for free, just to see the impact that it would make, It increased the value of my home by at least twice what I put into it. and didn't decrease the value or the sell-ability of the neighbors homes.

"To you whom worry about the neighbors opinions, Worry less thy neighbor, more for thy self! For you may be the ones the neighbor frowns at most".
I would not want you as a neighbor, because you probably complain way too much.
