Getting closer on starting the framing for the new garage. We are planning on using the 4'x8' sheets of StuccoBoard for the siding so that it matches the house. Do I need to use the standard OSB or plywood sheathing or can I put the StuccoBoard straight to the studs? Can I still use vapor barrier if I dont use sheathing?

Thanks, Hodag

I'm not familiar with Stuccoboard, but most companies these days have installation instructions available on their website - take a look there and see if they require sheathing underneath their product or not.

Are you talking about the James Hardie / Hardipanel boards with the embossed stucco surface? SOME Hardie products say they can be installed over studs. As already stated, check with the manufacturer for requriements INCLUDING stud spacing. IMHO, I wouldn't do it even if the mfr. did allow installation over bare studs. That board is only 5/16" thick, and regardless of impact strength, it will deflect a lot in the wind. Also, if you don't sheathe the building, you'll have to use some other form of diagonal bracing to keep your walls from racking.
