Do you need compressor or engine rings

A while back a member which is also my bud needed to find some rings for his old errie compressor. They don't make this compressor pump anymore and there is very little information about them. He went on a search but only yielded quantity purchases because it was a custom made job for the rings. You can see the original post here.

So I got on the web and track down a guy who has alot of older rings for all types of machines and if he doesn't have them he can make them for a reasonable price.

This was a 4 pistion compressor pump that was worth rebuilding, so don't get rid of old machines if it needs a rebuild. Hope this info helps others.

Where were you when I scrapped out the old Davey compressor from work 2 years ago! Danged thing ran dry of oil due to leaky head gasket and blew a connecting rod. I forced it to live another year while looking for parts but apparently they don't exist. Boss man got tired of me nursing the thing and bought a (ugh) IR from TSC. Nowhere near the compressor as the Davey! I tore that old warhorse down and let the scrap man haul off the remains. It was a sad day for me.

It's sad to hear a story like that. These old compressors are so much better then the new stuff lower end stuff.

So this is how it all came about, I was working at his house and noticed his comp was taking to long to refill. I mention it him and he told me it's fine but has notice oil in the tank. I told him the oil rings are gone so it's going to need a rebuild. After a couple of weeks he picks up a IR T30 5HP 80gal used and offered me the old one. I guess I jumped to quick because he knows I only grab quality stuff and he had to rethink it.

After a while he tells me he wants to rebuild it, sure I told him but make sure you can get the rings "BEFORE" you do anything! Next thing I know he machined the diameter of the valves and ask me to punch the holes though, which I did. Then he decided to look for the rings and couldn't find them. I even asked him to post on GG to see if any other members had a connection, which non had. I stayed up one night and punched in all kinds of keywords until I found several but only one panned out. Lucky us.

So if I didn't help him fix the old one I wouldn't get the IR compressor. So I had a little incentive. lol I already have two compressors (quincy, speedair) but their gas. I wanted an electric to blow off chips on the machines.

I use Dave for rings. Plus, he can also machine your piston for ring spacers if needed. Almost every Hit & Miss engine I have rebuilt has needed ring spacers. Good guy to deal with, just sent him a piston yesterday for a 1917 2HP Waterloo Engine.

I've been using an old Erie for the past 40 years, it was 25 years old when I got it, always thought the damn thing would just quit. Not yet. It just keeps going. It's neat to see people make parts for these forgotten machines.

I have an Erie compressor built in 1951. The 1 1/2 HP Peerless electric motor runs quite nicely and the compressor is much quieter than most home compressors. However, it takes a long time to build air. Do you think new rings would solve that issue?

Remember that rings are only a part of the whole system. The condition of the cylinder wall and the size of the cylinder bore are equally important.
