Do you really need an added on air compressor filter?

I got a used 30 gallon, 6HP Craftsman oil less compressor for general home garage work, I went to Sears and I saw they have a red $20 air compressor filter and also a $10 self oiler (inline). It should trap and Remove Harmful Water Vapor and Debris Particles from Compressed Air Supply.

I will basically use an old 1/2 impact wrench. Since the wrench and the other tools are used, I feel I am wasting 30 bucks on this stuff. I read the reviews on the oiler and they said negative things. I am also debating whether I should install the in line filter. I need to get some extra pipes since the tank is to big and cannot accommodate this filter. Does anyone have any opinions on these filters? I saw Harbor Freights had some, but they look cheap. I tend to buy in impulse.

If you don't want to buy a filter, make sure you use tool oil. On the Cman compressor I had, I ran a 25ft hose to a water filter with quick disconnects. Then another 25ft hose to the tool, I don't use an oiler.

I would protect the tools from moisture with the filter. Put it as far away from the compressor as possible (I know, a home application, but even 15' of black pipe cools the air down so the filter can trap the water).

I don't use an oiler. I just add a drop or two to the ****** every time I use my tools (other than a paint gun of course).

I have seen some folks do piping all over their garage, I think that looks tacky.

Not if you like the industrial look. Besides, it works. You should be cooling the air, not super heating it by piping it through the attic. Cool air drops out the water. And you really need to control the water.

I have a 5 hp 2 stage compressor and I have a filter right on the outlet of the tank. I did oil ( Marvel Mystery oil) my air tools 1-2 times a week when I used them daily in the body shop. My air tools are really really old now....
