Some times the wife will say woody I have never seen that tool before but most times she does not care.

What scares the **** out of me is when I am pushing up dirt from 6 feet under and she thinks getting $5.00 dollars for a mag drill is a good deal while the guy is throwing the money at her and running out the door laughing all the way.

Oh she knows. She is just trying To figure out how much it cost. So she can spend the same amount

No, she really doesn't pay any attention to what I have out in the garage. I've been buying, restoring , and trading motorcycles for close to 40 years now. Our garage has held as many as 10, and as few as three. There's five in there now. They come and go. She couldn't tell you which one I've had for 30 years, and which one I picked up this past summer. There's two more out in the barn she hasn't seen yet, and one in the basement all in pieces, too!

I heard this saying once "my only fear when I die is that my wife will sell all my cars for the price I told her I paid for them"

My wife was an artist before going blind, so she also needed gobs of tools & supplies. We just never questioned each others purchases plus I bought stuff for her and she did the same for me. Some of hers I built and/or used for her art work such as a mat cutter and I made virtually all of her frames.

Its a good thing to be married to someone who understands the need for tools & supplies along with a place to keep & use them.

Sure my wife knows and she's usually cool about it. I generally let her know in advance what I am interested in adding to my tools and equipment. Hell, it's her money as much as it's mine so why not let her know .....

You guys need to let the wife use tools, when I met my wife she had never put gas in her car. Last year she bought a man lift, now she wants a cnc router and a powder coating gun. When I want tools she gets excited and starts looking for them now, and never even wants jewelry.

I mentioned to the wife at lunch today I was going to stop by the hangar tomorrow to make sure the plane was ready for our trip the next day. She said "Tomorrow is Tuesday, thats Snap-On day." and rolled her eyes.

Guilty.

Sometimes my girlfriend will ask me whether I really need that tool I bought or is it worth buying that massive lot of tools just to pick out a couple to keep and sell off the rest. However, as soon as she sees me using the tools to fix something for her she never questions my tool purchases for at least a month. Soooo when it comes time to buy a lift ill just fix something big on her car and she wont complain when I get it installed!

Yes, she notices every tool I buy.

Because I take her along to use the other 20% off coupon...!

Bill

same here. She likes that I show her my new tools and is generally happy for me and doesn't mind when I drag her along to HF to get a freebie and use a coupon with me...she doesn't really have any expensive hobbies and isn't much of a shopper so there's no quid-pro-quo to worry about...though she has recently developed an affection for converse tennis shoes for some reason...

I just loaded up my two boxes with a bunch of new Gearwrench tools and moved all my Pittsburgh tools to a new tool cart. I showed her the new cart and how to use it, I'd rather her dirty up and leave scattered throughout the house my Pittsburgh tools v.s. my new Gearwrench's. She didn't seem to care/notice that the box was new.

She also used some of my new screwdrivers the other day taking apart some furniture, never said a word about the "new" appearance, and she proceeded to dirty them up

she usually dont notice new tools unless i point it out to her.

i use my "extra" cash to buy small stuff occasionally.
anything over that, she knows about before i ever start looking.
i dont buy tools just to have more tools. theres always a purpose in mind, and rarely does a tool not get used after it's purchased

Single small items go unnoticed or she might ask "did you get some new stuff?" when she catches me near my tool box or knows the tool man is / was just here, because she is actually interested in what I'm up to. She definitely notices big stuff, but never questions it.

Most of the time I show my wife the tools, but if she remembers what i got is another story. Since most of my tools I get at estate sale for cheap she don't really say much, plus I sell some of the finds to support the hobby so she really don't say much.

Not a clue, I have brought home full Jeeps and parts too. I hide them in the trailer and filter them in and out over time. 3 Willys have come and gone in the last year....she still thinks it's the same Jeep.

And this tread needs to self destruct in 2 days!

I went from a 26" craftsman to a 44" w/side cabinet. I had so much extra room that I was getting packages almost everyday for a long time. My wife has no problem with my spending. We both have good jobs, our youngest just graduated from college, and our house is almost paid off.

My wife cares.. Only because she didn't understand how you can need 20 different pliers..
One day she was doing something with her tiny tool kit she had for around the apartment before she moved into my house and we got married. and was using a pair of pliers and having a heck of a time..
I walked by after a quick look, to the garage grabbed one of those "20" pliers and handed it to here and said "try these".. Within a minute she "got it".. as she had been playing with hers for 20 minutes and it took all of 30 seconds with the correct pair..
She worries more about the boxes that say summit on them..
My worry is has started saying she wants an old vehicle for her own..

funny you mention that....

a week or so ago, i was thinking the same thing, so i beat her to the punch.

i need a couple tires for my mud truck
need to repair the winch
need to rebuild my air compressor
need to fix the drivers window, and get the correct rear rotors for my truck.

i came up with a total, then told her she could have the same amount of money to spend on whatever she wants...

got the ok to get everything taken care of

Yeah, she usually just wants to know what they do though. I can buy a $1K tool and she won't blink an eye.

she only notices the large items like a hawk! "is that new, how much did it cost and did we talk about is??" heard that a million times. Of course I've always mentioned these purchases to her and why it's needed but she tunes me out until it's home.

Years ago my brother in law and I built hot rods. We would scour the area looking for old cars and parts. My sister in law was bitching to my wife about how much time and effort we spent building cars. My wife's grandmother told them "It could be worse. They could be chasing women and getting drunk". My wife took that to heart and has never complained about tools, cars, motorcycles or any other habit I picked up. In fact, she knows and often goes with me to pick up new items. Today, she bought me a nice Bretford service cart at Goodwill because she "thought it might be handy". We don't keep secrets from each other and I definitely don't have to "slip in" something behind her back.

Not so much but if it's a tool I get from Amazon, I'll usually buy a children's book for the kids at the same time. Anyway, one day I walked in the door after work and I said to the kids, "I got a new book for us to read, today." and my wife says, matter-of-factly, "Did you get a tool or something for the garage." Haha.

Mine never notices anything new in the shop, unless I had her with me when I bought it. She always encourages me to buy whatever I want, I recently bought a bunch of snap on tools from a guy that got promoted to management and when we went to pick them up she bought me his classic 78 for Easter. She is very good to me.
