I wish I could... When I got out of college thats what I wanted to do was buy a chunk of land and put up a large garage, then just make a small apartment inside it. Unfortunately that was when the housing market crashed and banks were scared to lend money for a house let alone a garage on a plot of land.

A buddy of mine lives in a big pole building. It's a monitor style roof & has been sided with conventional siding like a regular home would have. Plus it has a few more windows. The living space is two stories, 2 bedrooms, 2 bath, probably about 1200 sq ft at one end of the building. This is the shop end. Just thru the doorway from the living space to the shop is a big table, bar height, about 10' x 10'. It's a great party table.

But the entire building is finished inside & out. It's nice enough that his wife has no issues living in it & raising kids. They call it a "Shophouse".

BTW, the shop space is big enough I think I could drive my Chevy 1/2 ton truck & 21' ski boat inside, do a U turn & drive out!

If I had it to all over again I would live in a garage. It would be a metal building in the 60 X 120 range with 1,800 sq ft of that being a 2 BR living area.

My wife really wants us to do this. Something similar to Chaz's place. We live in a rural area with no zoning or permits needed. There are many around here that do it.

I'd love to more pics. I'd really like to see more interior pics of Chaz's place. That was a job well done!

We live in my garage, 4 of us. The overall building is 30x40', about 900sf of that is living space. Includes 3 small bedrooms, a single bath, a living area, and a small kitchen/dining area. It is a tight fit but we've been living in here for about 18 months and it isn't so bad. I don't have the space to bring a car inside to work on, but I have a carport and a tractor shed that I can use for that. The upstairs has flooring for storage and could be converted to living space in a pinch, but that isn't in our plans for now.
The plan is to live here while we pay off our debt, then build a big house. The land and this building are paid in full, just need to pay off a stupid credit card then we're building.

If I look at it through the mind of a...say.... 18-26 year old, I could see it being OK, maybe even fun - for a while....but I am AMAZED that anyone actually thinks that living in their garage - or parking in their kitchen - is a decent way to live. What about the CO? The smell of oils and gas? The dirt and water tracked in? I really love my garage and my house, but I don't want them in the same building! Just seems odd to me.

Of course The Shrine is beautiful! :)

I don't think anyone is parking in their kitchen. It is the same is walking through the door from a attatched garage into the house. Just with a much larger garage.

My next house will be a warehouse.

I was parking my motorcycle in the kitchen until I finished the workshop.

In the meantime, I have a 360 square foot room above my garage that I'll be turning into an apartment and moving into, does that count as living in the garage?

The old police / fire station in our town is for sale. 90mi e of Chicago. Cool outside but a mess inside. Wouldn't be surprised if you could get it for $1. With the right proposal.

I've got my eye on an old 3 story school building in town. It's all brick, probably about 150' x 150', maybe bigger. I would make the ground floor into the shop. The second floor has the main stairs going to it, so I would give that to the wife for her photography business. Then we would live on the 3rd floor and have some patio space on the roof.

x1000, there is a small older one here, I drive by it and dream all the time. But they want like $400,000+ for it, or lease it. I could have a huge house and garage for $400,000....
