So the Autel works, at least partially, on the Ferrari. It scanned most of the modules but could not find the Capote module, which I thought was a bit strange and lead me to believe problem with top was either a bad module or power supply problem. It turned out to be a power supply problem, which I only discovered quite by accident. The car had a built in radar detector which fortunately was connected to same circuit as the Capote module. While looking at module I just happened to touch a connector in wiring harness and the radar detector went off. I showed the gentleman and he said yeah can you remove the radar detector it's driving me nuts keeps going on and off. I said oh, you mean like this... and moved the wiring harness. He said exactly. I said I don't think the radar detector is the problem I think there is a loose or broken wire in the harness. I moved it to a position where radar detector was working and wouldn't you know it, the top started working too! He was thrilled but his wife was even happier. He apparently spent past two weeks trying to resolve issue with no luck. It turned out to be loose connection on main ground wire within the connector. I put a jumper bypassing the connector and told him it would try to find connector or terminals and will replace it next time I'm upstate. In the meantime top is working fine.
The Autel was able to see the Capote module after power was resolved but got hung up scanning it with a no network connection found. Not sure if this mirrors factory software and was looking for a Ferrari server or if it just wanted the Autel connected to Internet. I didn't test it any further. The other modules seemed to scan fine but I didn't spend anymore time with that as problem with top was resolved.
We spent several hours talking to the guy and his wife afterwards. What an interesting couple. The gentleman was a car afficionado and has had some really nice and some extraordinarily rare cars over the years. One was a 1935 Lincoln V12 that was apparently one of only fifteen ever made. He has some cars that he previously owned in museums. He's owned many Ferraris, Jaguars, a Ford GT, original Shelby Cobra 427 among others. Really interesting character.
I think I got my son a driving gig to take him and his wife to the local Casio or restaurants. My son goes to school about 15 minutes away from where they live and absolutely loves the types of cars he owns I told them they would love him. They said they would definitely call him. My son was thrilled when I told him. They currently own the Ferrari, a beautiful Maserati (I think he said with a Ferrari 430 engine he started it up and it sounded like a track car LOL) and a new Mercedes SUV.
Fun day.
