I was wondering if when you worked someplace sketchy that you took your tools home daily. I do. When i first started i wanted a nice box to be there but now im glad my cart i ordered was back ordered. I found out today that they dont even put a pad lock on the bay doors overnight. I have already inquired about an alarm and at least they have that, but untill i can make the changes that are necessary, i will not leave a single tool.

My company lets me drive my service van home 7 days a week, and if not I'd be taking them home in my car. I work from home too so I need tools, luckily I'm on call 24/7 so I always have my tools here

If I worked at a place where I had to worry about my tools like that, and I didnt have a service truck, I would leave and find work elsewhere..

^^^totally agree..shop should be locked up, and all boxes too. I even lock mine when I go to lunch. You have every right to lock your home when you are away, why not your toolbox?

They are pretty bad about leaving doors (OHD or regular) unlocked at my place. We had a official policy about coverage up to $35K in tools dated 2005 but I recently inquired about it again and they said "Lock your box and carry your own insurance". This is a pretty large company. I got pissed about it and am in the middle of getting another job over it.

I open the shop and I find a OHD or side door unlocked anywhere from once every two weeks or twice a week. Also no alarm system at our place.

I'm just a home mechanic so I don't need to lock anything up but if I'm leaving for the weekend I lock my box to keep my tools out of the hands of my roomates
But for op, I wouldn't go looking for a new job yet. My landlord has a diesel shop by my house and he never has anything locked. We are out of town a ways a know all the neighbors since they all go there to get their stuff fixed. However the only two boxes in the shop are the owners box and his sons. The other mechanics use the bosses tools. I'm not aware of anything getting stolen besides one disgruntled employee who made off with a couple items. Guy was a ***** anyways

I just building a tool bag that I can lug in and out of the job sites but once I get the sled deck I am building a small tool box that will be way better supplied that I can just run out to the truck to grab certain tools, or if need be break my back and take it in as It be on casters as well.

Simply put, I wouldn't work there. If they can't even lock up at night, what the hell eles don't they do right around there. This is coming from a guy who locks his tool box twice a year to move it to clean under it.

I did a wiring job one summer and was told I could leave my tools in the GC's gang box.
I came in the next day and my tools were overturned in the box.
From then on, I took my tools home with me...

When working for a dealer, big boxes usually stayed at the dealership, and were locked at the end of the day, and often while on a test drive or during noon break.. When on field service jobs; I use smaller carry boxes, and am very particular where I set them.. They usually, but not always, get loaded at the end of the day. If you have any gut feelings ,, load them....
Keep in mind that theft can happen in broad daylite when customers and co-workers can walk off with stuff.. How about the co-workers who "borrow" tools and do not return them? Locks and rules are two good things to maintain wherever you work.. USE or Lose.. The boxes in my home shop get closed, but seldom locked... A Security breach out here ?? Possible, but no fool has tried it yet.. Remember to lock your vehicle when your tools are inside...

I lugged my bag of tin knocker tools all over the Metropolitan Transit Authority system for years. Never left them on site.

My old boss would get mad or something, he would send one of use home. When he did this to I'd fill up a bucket full of my tools, he really hated the idea of side jobs at home, I did it whether I had a side job or not.
