Now that the snow is mostly gone and the sun is shinning for the first time in over a week, its time to move outdoors. You are looking at the east side of the garage, siding and windows are complete on the other three sides. Going to put siding on the dormer section first then install two windows under the gable. There will eventually be a 30 x 12 - 14 ft lean-to on this side of the building.

Got three lifts of staging up today. Have to take apart some staging on the second floor tomorrow or Sunday, haul it down to set up the fourth lift. Then I'll put on the outriggers and tie it to the building. Will most likely procrastinate a few days before getting the first piece of siding up.

I'm with you on that one Don.
I can't believe you still have patches of snow on the ground.
I'm sure you'll be happy to have the siding done.
Get in some mustang time and enjoy some sun. All work and no play....you know.

Just drizzle so far Dan. Still haven't finished the staging but all the parts are out there.

Tried to get started in the garden the other day. Filled the tractor bucket full of rocks then got stuck. Had to empty the bucket so I could use it to push myself out with the help of a pallet and a couple of planks. Still have more rock picking to do. Next week a local farmer will deliver 12 yds of screened topsoil. Will blend that in with the 12 ysd of compost that I put in last fall. There are 6 yds of compost in the trailer below.

Put the boat lift in the lake this morning and if the rain holds off a bit will put the dock in.

No updates for awhile Don. I'm sure you haven't been sitting around doing nothing. Show us what you've been up to. I'm sure I'm not the only one that's curious.

Back in May I put up some scaffolding to install a little bit of siding. Then I got busy with garden, then June & July came and went. Procrastinated long enough and finally got it hung.

Now I have to take the scaffold down and reset it for installing upstairs windows. Maybe I'll get it done before the snow flies. Early goose season starts Sep 1st and I have to build a couple blinds.

Took half of the scaffolding down today then started on building the frame for a goose blind. I'm using parts salveged from a shelter logic greenhouse that a tree fell on a few years ago. Debated on whether or not to build a couple small ones or one big one. A hunting buddy came over today to help. After a few beers, decided on a big one that will be 4' x 8'. Will post photos after it's a bit further along.

Here's a pic of the old green house

Finished assembling the goose blind frame today. Since the tree bent up a lot of components, including upper corner pieces, I took the four corner feet and rebent them. They initially had an eighty degree or so bend. Not having a tubing bender, I improvised and stretched them out to around 112 degrees.

Here is the frame set up in the Sportsmen's Deluxe configuration, which can also be used for deer hunting. It's 4 ft deep by 8 ft wide and 7 ft to the peak. I have a couple sets of extra legs so it will have four possible height arrangements. By removing the legs completely, it can be used as a ground blind with a pop open roof and two people can sit back to back.

The roll of straw mat will be used for one of it's skins, several are planned.

With regard to work on the garage today, I regraded the driveway to get rid of a few high spots.

Glad for the update Don. That should make a difference when it's done. But don't rush it. It appears that you are a Ford man. Tinker Rick will be happy to know that, he worked Ford parts until he retired and is a ford guy all the way. Always has been. I love to have him work on GMs when he comes down to help me. All he does is *****.

Started getting ready to continue upstairs work today. Have about 120 sq ft between the second floor and attic to close off, the area behind the plastic.

Cleared out a work area, moved some tools upstairs. There is a bunch of temporary stuff in the overhead that needs removal, plan to start on that tomorrow.

All the stuff on the left hand side of the plastic has been moved out of the way.

Just an update. Finished getting one layer of insulation in the attic (R-23), started on a second layer (R-46), put up a little more sheet rock and cut holes for a couple can lights. Using a hole saw to cut drywall can be messy, produces a bit of dust and flying chunks, safety glasses and a respirator were used.

Also rearranged stuff so I can start putting up walls.

Don, I love the recessed lighting that you've done. When we start the kitchen reno my wife tells me that's what she wants. I'll be looking for advice. Looking good by the way.

DP: sorry i haven't made a post on your thread yet, but honestly i was having a bit of a problem with the map you gave me. where do i turn off to get there? I was looking for Stairway to Heaven and showed up in Three Dog's Night's driveway. :D

I was going to pick you up and take you to DLC's garage because they were having good beer and chili, but i guess we'll have to stop next time.

Worked for a while in the garage today.

First photo is all the **** that drips off the cars in the winter. The rubber berms are doing their job.

Second photo shows the flex space for the roof trusses to keep them from damaging the drywall and prevent transferring the roof load to the floor trusses. The spacers are to keep a 3/8" gap until I'm done. Drywall will be able to slide on the upper 2x4 and the gap will be covered by trim. Lateral loads will be taken by adjoining walls or pins in longer wall segments. Hope that makes sense to everyone.

Sorry you couldn't find it Drives, the hair on the end of the dog's tail is to small to show up on the map. Don't think we would have made it all the way to DLC's as I have a good selection of IPAs to enjoy and my neighbor, a retired trooper, would have a few with us. Back in the day it wouldn't have been a problem but Arnie, being the responsible person that he is, would insist we don't drive and that we stay put and drink a few more.

DP: wishing you weren't 3000 miles drive from me because seriously sounds like fun. here's to your health and i'll go grab an IPA from the fridge to tip your direction. here's a picture for you visual.

sounds like you are still making progress even though it's awefully cold and a lot of snow around your place.

don't work too hard because your body already is working hard in the cold weather.

cheers (IPA to you sir)

I know this is an older thread but .....that Bend Pak weld would scare the hell out of me being under that lift. Nice looking garage build though!

Thanks rburke65.

Did the weld before I assembled the lift and talked to Bend Pak before doing it. That was not a structural component. If it was structural, I would have called someone that I know and is a certified high pressure boiler welder.

Don.

Just read through your thread and you certainly have done an excellent job on your garage. Well designed and implemented.

I have thought of installing a stair lift sometime down the road, one of the reasons the stair is 4 ft wide.

Have you considered using your 4 post lift to get items from the first to second floor, via an access opening? I used my 4 post for moving heavy items up into loft areas at my previous shop. I'd put items in my 5' x 10' trailer, put the trailer on the lift, lift the items to height, roll the items off the trailer, onto the loft area. Food for thought.

Looks like that was a cold weld... How's the rest of the welding look? Having been a CWI for years I've found that where there is one bad weld you'll typically find more by the same fella.

Thanks for taking the time to document your build and your other adventures.

Thanks for the kind words John.

The thought of using the lift to move stuff to the 2nd floor did cross my mind. There is one location that I could use, the landing at the top of the stairs, that would not involve modifying any trusses.:)

I did look at the other welds prior to assembly. On the broken weld, the bead was off to the side of the **** end and only a small portion of the bottom edge was attached. In other words, the person doing the welding missed the mark.

Finished framing the center room and put a couple sheets of OSB on the back wall of one of the closets. There will be a layer of aromatic cedar on top of it.

Doesn't look like you sat around today. I'll bet you are happy that much is done. Looking good Don, the layout looks pretty sweet for a garage. Are you planning to stay there if the house becomes unavailable to you on a bad night.:lol_hitti

I'll through up a couple of photos in the chair thread.

Thanks Dan

I'm basically out of lumber for the moment. In the second photo, you can see what remains of my 2x4 supply. Next week I'll make a run to the lumber yard and pick up a few things. I typically limit what I haul home to what I feel like ******* up the stairs on any particular day, which tends to be enough to last around a week. If I feel like a diversion, I still have lots of electrical supplies.

As far as bad nights go, everything I need is up there.

Drives & Dan, planing on posting a few more when I finish drywalling the corner room. If its not raining tomorrow I'm planning to pick up more materials, including enough drywall to finish the room, currently two sheets short.
