Out of curiosity, why didn't you take payment before mailing the stuff? Why not use PayPal. Don't think I would ever buy or sell anything over the Internet with out PayPal protection. Especially if I'm dealing with people I don't know.

Just trying to help fellow GJers. Thought (hoped) they would all be stand up guys. Which the real GJers are. Everyone else I have dealt with has been johnie-on-the-spot with payment. He is just a slug that slipped in. I'll see if the USPS will do anything. If not, well, let's just say that I know some people in his area.

Yeah, probably 99% of the guys on GJ would never rip you off. It'll be Duct_Dummy's loss, though, if he gets booted off GJ. He'll miss out on the collective wisdom and advice of this website.

Ryan or the mods could probably block his IP or the MAC address of his router, so he can't simply set up a new GJ account.

Definitely not your fault, though, for trusting someone. It's his fault.

Damn! I hope he sorts his ethics out.
Sorry for your troubles, I hope they step up soon.

If not you should read up on some of the stories on the internet where scammers names and addresses have been made public, people have lost jobs, the place they rent and and friends they have.. when anonymous douchebaggery comes home to roost. I know that some people who might feel morally challenged doing something like that but remember, it takes a village to raise a garage journal member.

If anyone is looking for a perfect example of victim blaming today, look no further.

Look, I take the same precautions as you do, but that's not really what this is about.
How is this victim blaming? I'm just asking a question. I'm not bashing the guy.

Sorry about getting worked up about it. This thread makes me a little upset.

I read it as a rhetorical question that went on and was answered by setting an example of how someone with better sense would never do something like that.

Anyway, let's focus on the real turd here, Duct_Dummy.

I don't ship out anything till the check clears the bank----it's that simple! If someone doesn't like it, it's a red flag to me and I just go on to the next customer. People know my work and what they can expect, so are willing to pay before items ship. This is very common! I won't even consider packing something up and shipping it out until the $$$ is in the bank. If someone doesn't like it, they won't be my problem to worry about!

Yes, lesson learned. I've just always been one willing to help people. I mean, look at my job for the last thirty years. But there's always a slug that spoils it for the others.

By the way, I talked to my local Postmaster who referred me to the Dallas postal inspection office. However, it no longer exists. So from there I was referred to the Fort Worth postal inspection office. But by then, they were closed for the day. So I'll try again tomorrow.

I got stiffed on an item I bought and the guy never shipped over on the HAMB. Same as you it started off with correspondence and then, nothing. I continued to correspond, however. In my last email I said I was sending a letter to each and every one of his business neighbors in his building exactly what has happened.

I had done enough homework, at that point, to share with him the names of the neighboring business/people. I told him I wouldn't defame him, I'd only include what was so. I had already drafted all the letters and would have them sent by a time I had set that afternoon. I sent him a pic of the envelopes. Even the envelopes had a note on the outside saying "**** ******** (his name) was paid $*** for an item and never sent it, can you believe that?" Within an hour, I had the money refunded to me and I destroyed the letters.

It was the only time that I figured it would've been worth getting stiffed. Dang, that would have sucked for him.

I really like your idea. I wouldnt have cared about the money at this point. I would have sent the letters. One good turn deserves another.

It's a shame there are people like Duct_Dummy who would do this kind of thing on here or anywhere. Toolmutt is a great guy to deal with. He just helped me with a tool purchase and everything was exactly as he said it would be. Thanks Toolmutt. I hope I can return the favor someday.

Great to hear!! We need to put a stop to these petty thieves!!! Morals, ethics and basic humanity are sorely lacking in people like this. Cowardice is very evident , as he has not attempted to contact you or defend himself here.
Duct_dummy karma is a ***** !!

Hey Toolmutt I am retired law enforcement. If you need help with authorities let me know via PM. I'd be glad to make some calls on your behalf. I'm sorry I'm a little late to the game here but I'm willing to help in any way I can.

Good luck dealing with the post office. My son has been having issues with a former non-paying tenant at his house (evicted in June) and they tell him its domestic dispute and they can't get involved. She puts a hold on the mail and then picks it up.

You probably mean a "civil matter"... vs a criminal matter... Every government agency loves to give that excuse otherwise they might have to do some work...

There needs to be a glitter bomb website where you can choose your package shape. That way you could keep sending different boxes to the same person and glitter the **** out of their place...

I filed the fraud complaint with the United States Postal Inspection Service electronically on January 17. Waited a while. When I had not heard back from them, I called to check on the status of the complaint. They have one of those customer service systems where you never actually talk to a human so I left a message. Waited a while. No response, so I called again and left another message. Still waiting. I'll try one more time but I don't have much hope. :dunno:

Wow. Sorry this has turned out this way. No one likes to be taken advantage of. I've been burned before and gotten pissed about it. Then I finally came to the realization that the offender will get his/her due - but it might not be from you.

Things have a way of working themselves out. Personally, I would just let it go and don't allow it to sour your perspective on your fellow man. There are a lot of good people out there - others, not so much. For them, they will reap what they sow.
