In the US you guys have managed to hold out for longer against outsourcing just about everything to China/Taiwan/etc compared with Australia. What you're currently experiencing in this regard we went through about 20+ years ago in the 1980's. I think it happened sooner in Australia because there was a lot less resistance to it than what you're seeing in the US.

When I was a kid in the 1970's my dad had lots of good Australian made tools, mostly Sidchrome, but most of what on the shelf these days is Chin/Taiw.

These Sutton drills are one of the few made in Australia set of tools I own.

Wall cabinet tool set; historically, usa brands like, snap-on and craftsman used to sell these. I don't think I have seen anyone else continue to make these type of sets that attach to a wall! Pretty cool... :)

Kincrome do them as well --> http://www.kincrome.com.au/web/cata...2526%2BSets%26sub_category%3DTool%2BCabinets=

Just wondering if anyone can pick this "new" Sidchrome ratchet? Go to 2:10 in the vid where the rep explains the new tool. Look like a familiar brand? I'd guess it might be a European made thing...

I wonder if it really is Sidchrome's "innovation"? Where's Monte!

My guess is Facom.

I despise our companies for taking their manufacturing off shore. That's why I support European stuff so passionately. I support the brands that support their own people and industry...and I don't care where that brand is based. If its a good product, and they support their own, that's good enough for me.

Sidchrome is saying its a 72 tooth ratchet on their site while Farcom is saying its a 50 tooth ratchet on theirs. I wonder if Facom would go to the trouble of putting a new mech. in it for Sidchrome or they just didn't bother to count!

I was cutting some plywood today and saw the COO on the skilsaw I inherited from my father and thought of this thread.

I think it would have been pruchased in the early 70's when he was building our house.

I listed them in post #60, haven't seen any of their stuff though.

That's a cool old saw Rural53...I'd say it has a few more years left in it too. Built like a brick S.H.

My DAWN vises are made in Aus but I dont know if they are still made locally. Probably now just 'Australian Owned' and import some of their products.

Mumme tools are still made locally. Mostly masonry tools and ladders and they also make the James Watt punches

As far as I know my Triton "collection" was all made in Australia, these were all bought about 7 or 8 years ago. The Super Jaws and the Multi-Stands are outstanding tools.

I was in Bunnings this weekend (please forgive me) and they had 'Wiss' tin snips on the shelf 'made in Australia'.

By Apex tools? part of cooper tools?

i don't know all the details. but at least they were made in Australia.

There were quite a lot of tools made in Australia historically, but very few in current production. Seems as though most Oz companies either folded, were bought out or started manufacturing offshore.
I have old stuff made in Australia by Sidchrome, Dowidat, DUFOR, Zircalloy, POPE, GEE JAY, and Wiltshire, but I'm not sure that there are many, if any companies producing tools here on a large commercial scale. (I'm no expert on the topic though, so I may be totally wrong:eek: )

I believe the tool in Mad Max was Mel Gibson :lol_hitti

Mel Gibson Made In USA Peekskill NY. Moved to Australia when he was 12.:bounce:

That is great news. I will have to check Bunnings for a set. If they are Made in Australia I would feel compelled to buy! :)
