I'm designing a 4th axis for my CNC laser. While I could easily by a low quality three jaw chuck for work holding for $20, I decided I want to design my own. I'm planning on 3D printing it. It doesn't have to be super strong or precise. We are talking about laser engraving plastic cups and pens. Not a high precision part by any stretch of the imagination.
I have found several CAD models I could just print, but not any info on how to design. I'm actually interested in learning something new as part of the process. I'm having trouble finding a reference for how to draft the compound curve for the scroll plate that controls the jaws. I'm also interested in learning about the pitch angle of that spiral and how it affects the chuck.
Anyone have a good reference they could point me at?
I do have a copy of The Machinery's Handbook at home, but I'm on travel and will not be able to get to it for a couple of weeks.
