I keep a magnetic parts tray on the drill press. I keep the chuck key (and alternate drill bits, if I'm swapping back and forth between sizes) on that tray.

Mine goes into the chuck when I'm not using it, when I am using it it just lays on the bench near the press. The magnet sounds like a good idea, but I'd have to retrain myself, cause I'll be looking all over for the dumb thing at first!:bounce:

Duct tape so you don't have to clean under the drill press?

Also, how does the little vise attach to the table? I've seen those, but never seen one in use.

Albrecht keyless ball bearing chucks

Concur,

Albrecht chucks are both easier to use, and grip the drill better. than will a Jacobs chuck.

One often sees drills with marked-up shanks from spinning under load in Jacobs chucks, but the Albrecht will hold the drill reliably.

Keep a light pattern 'Ridgid' strap-wrench to hand, tho, as sometimes an Albrecht chuck will grip firmly enough to require the use of the strap-wrench to release the drill. (yes, I know, there are machinists who will use a Stillson pattern pipe wrench to loosen an Albrecht chuck.....and, yes, that works.....but its not a nice way to treat good equipment)

Even better, if you do enough drilling to justify the first-cost investment, are the 'Wahlstrom' chucks. They use four jaws instead of the more common three, grip very well, and are the most convenient to use.

(if you feel you really 'must' have a Jacobs chuck, get the ball bearing variety......the plain bearing version is common and cheap, but really meant only for very light duty use.)

cheers

carla

Yes the duct tape keeps the shavings out from under, but that was because the drill press was bolted down, now it's just sitting there so I can skooch it over and clean under it.

The little press vise just sits on top of the plate, I don't bolt it down. As this is pretty light duty equipment I just use it to hold the odd bit of sheet metal or whatever to keep from chewing my hand up.
