Drill Press Sleeve Fabrication

Hi GJ

I'm in the middle of restoring a Toolkraft drill press (8in, 1/2HP, model 360A).

Unfortunately, I broke some parts on disassembly, and I'm looking to make or find replacements.

Specifically, there is a sleeve at the top of the press that was stuck to the upper pulley.
- Exterior of the sleeve is 3/4OD and rounded (fixed with set screw to the pulley).
- Interior of the sleeve is 5/8ID, but is fluted with 5 longitudinal channels, which the top of the spindle rides in. I've seen very similar channels on other drill presses.

Wondering if you have any suggestions? I figure I can buy 3/4 OD, 5/8 ID tubing.

Then in theory I could put some set screws through the tubing wall to the spindle grooves, but the trouble is they'd need to be a square fit (takes rotational torque, but needs to be free to slide longitudinally).

Breaking that internal spline part is an issue.

I made one once (it had a flange) using a keyway broach (it was a straight sided and not an involute-ish profile). The broach had to be used 6 places in my setup. I welded a short tab to the broach bushing and put a clearance hole for a #10-24 screw. I used my mill to drill & tap a bolt-circle with 6 bolts on a diameter that would match the hole in the tab.

So then I just cycled the bolt around and broached the keyways one at a time.

Would be an ideal part to 3D print in metal

You could make it on a lathe..

I busted a similar part on an old Atlas dp and was able to buy one.. maybe a similar model would work. The part on the Atlas was plastic and made to be sacrificial

Thanks for the thoughts! I checked today - they don't have any replacements for sale. I also wondered if there were similar parts available from other manufacturers.

@rsanter, I broke it several ways....I cut several pieces off the end of it, and it seems damaged the OD. Access was very limited, so the cuts were not flush - their design has it caught inside the housing. Unfortunately not repairable.

@matt_i, I'll have to look closely at home on the gears profile. I have a hard time imagining that I'd be able to make the 5 cuts evenly spaced enough to fit ! :)

If parts on available, you have three choices
1. Make new parts from scratch
2. Modify available parts.
3. Take machine to scrapyard

Grizzly tools has a good website with exploded views of the various assemblies. Just a quick look showed a similarly splined shaft for $46. I’m sure it’s metric and would require some modifications but it’d be a start

Can the OD be turned down to save the spline portion and insert that piece into another tube and silver soldered?

@strength and power : Good idea, I'm going to start with Atlas but may also check on Grizzly too.

#3 is a real possibility - but it has been a fun project to try to save it. I'm only $60 in..

@rsanter - now that I hadn't thought of ! Will look at wall thickness and available tubing.
