Drill press spindle questioj

Hello all,

I have a Duracraft 500 drill press. I want to use a newer keyless chuck with a JT2 taper, however it seems the current spindle is just shy of the JT2 size. Odd seeing how it has a Jacobs on there now.

But anyway I was wondering if spindles from similar size presses were interchangeable? I suppose they could vary a bit so long as the bearings were of size.

Any help/thoughts would be great.

Don't confuse a Jacobs brand chuck with what taper might be in it.

go here https://www.newmantools.com/tech/taper.htm and see if you can find the taper of your spindle. Jt33 is a popular one.

Well it can't be the 33 because my taperb is smaller than a JT2 and the 33 is obviously larger than that.

I'm sure you looked at the link, but 2 short certainly seems to fit the bill.

What I really wanted to know was if drill press spindles are interchangeable? Say a 15" press spindle with another brand 15" press spindle, all things otherwise being equal.

If it's a generic Asian machine, then it's likely that the same machine is sold under a gazillion different brand names.

So I suppose it will come down to just pulling the trigger on a shot in the dark..l
