This was my grandfathers mortiser. The 4 step pulley broke so he made one out of oak that he glued up and turned on his lath. Any help in finding a new pulley would be greatly appreciated.

I have my grandfathers drill press from about 1940. Sears. The color is the same, the hex bolt on the front of the pulley guard is the same, the bent rod clamp handles are the same.

I’m out of town for another week, so i can’t get more info. Like the data plate with model number.

Correct... made by Duro.

Duro also made their own branded machines. Parts MAY be interchangeable.

The internal splines located on the top of the spindle pulley are also very similar to some Atlas-made spindle pulleys. What are the specs on the underside of the pulley... bearing shaft diameter and depth?

I looked at my old pulley and the only marking is the "made in USA" The top is .51 and .63. The bottom is .82. My guess is there is some ware. I forgot to check the depth. I think it may also started out in life as a 4 step pulley.

How does the original pulley attach? What size bearing shaft fits into the pulley from underneath? How deep does the shaft insert into the pulley?

I just checked it out closer. It simply slides on from the top. My grandfather simply made a straight bore with recessed bottom bore to receive the larger bearing/ bushing on the bottom of the shaft which slides up and down on the splined shaft. He then drove steel pins into the splines to keep it in position. He then capped it with a small plate to keep the pins in position.
Pretty ingenious I think.
The larger part of the bushing is 1.308
The smaller part is .810 Top to bottom is 1.25

I'm now thinking the recess in the bottom of his pulley is due to ware, but I am not positive. He did install a set screw in the side of the largest slot
But your right it is working and has for over 30 years. I am hoping to find a version of the original metal pulley.

Ingenious? I agree! And well crafted.

I believe the female shaft of original pulley rode above that collar and the large sheave extended below the collar. It's rather typical I think.

I have a fubar Atlas spindle pulley. The female pulley shaft measures ~0.9345, so that idea won't fly. You'll need a Power Kraft or Duro part.

If the broken partially white thing you posted was the original pulley, it was likely a pot metal zinc casting.
I know zinc is used for a lot of applications, but it’s sort of a **** metal to use.
It can lose strength over time a few years after casting due to off gassing.
Depending on how the original zinc alloy was made and the zinc purified, there could be impurities in the alloy, that would make the part more likely to corrode over time.
Unless you find a pristine “new” old stock example of the part, it probably wouldn’t be worth it, and might not even be safe.
