An iPhone may be a "poor" replacement for a pro tool, however as a comparative, I find them very useful. Showkey, this is an excellent little review with an attempt to quantify your observations with the tools at hand :)

I did a similar review on the Cree T8 replacement specifically looking at higher CRI lighting (the Feit is at a fairly low CRI of 80) and found excellent discussion in that thread as well. The Cree bulb was still brighter than the T8 TL950 off axis, which is consistent with your off axis observations on the Feit.

http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=274462

It's ranking #4 in Google "Cree t8 review" which illustrates the importance perhaps of good information and civilized discussion in threads like these ones :)

I'm waiting on a 90+ CRI direct wire T8 replacement.

You might be waiting a bit. I believe the LED folks are banking more on the "CQS" standards as it takes more colors into account, and lends itself much more to the more inclusive color spectrum of LED.

The problem with 90+ CRI is the > 20% lumen loss (thus efficiency loss) when compared to 80-85 CRI. I have a 95 CRI fixture (CQS: R9 > 89), efficiency = 84 L/W. Compare to the identical fixture at 85 CRI (CQS: R9 > 16), efficiency = 107 L/W.

Doesn't the high CRI need to mix RGB diodes?
I have used the Cree recessed light bulbs in our kitchen.
CRI is high 80s which is good at the time. But the mixing of lights does start to fail and some are turning red. Too bad they are $100 each if I wanted to match

I will take a single color diode chips for the garage with a CRI hit , it isn't that bad you guys are making it sound like it is monochromic or something. I am 100% sure you can tell wiring colors under 85 or 95 CRI

Higher CRI does indeed come at an efficiency cost..and for many will be a non-issue. One of the quality control issues we deal with for example is anodizing. Black vs very dark blue looks identical under 80 CRI, but look quite different under sunlight (sunlight=100CRI). So in the shop, the closest thing to sunlight with decent efficiency are the Philips TL950s at 98 CRI. If you're doing any kind of paint work in your shop, the ideal scenario again is high CRI lighting. Where similar colors are used in a wiring harness, I figure better color accuracy is never a bad thing.

It's been well discussed here how LED lighting needs a better CRI equivalent measure. I agree completely and look forward to CQS as the standard. In fact, by looking at spectra, it looks like LED high CRI lights will do much better than phosphor juggling in florescent tubes. The reason I tested the CREE T8 LED particular is that they do advertise 90+ CRI. In any case, I have two cases of the T8s :)

This site has some neat interactive images on the LED side of things: http://www.yujiintl.com/high-cri-led-lighting

At their cost, these Feit lights look to be great value for utility lighting.

I wish you the best of luck. Feit is some of the biggest garbage on the LED market. With a little searching you can do better for a little less.

None the less, it'll still do better for you than the fluorescents did.

No. That's one way of doing it. The other way is to change the phosphor blend in the LED itself. All white LEDs are actually blue with phosphor put on top (that's the yellow/orange stuff you see when LEDs are OFF). The phosphor is excited by the blue wavelength and emits white light (or whatever color your phosphor blend yields).

Depends on who you ask. Looking at the Amazon reviews, the Feits are doing quite well. Mine have been perfect.

Another data point......:dunno: Consumer Reports rated FEIT standard LED bulbs the highest of all bulbs tested.

The best buys on all LED bulbs is look for utility companies rebates......Costco in southern Wisconsin had 40-60 watt equivalent standard LED for $1.00 each. LED BR30 75w for $4.00 each and vanity bulbs for $2.00 each :beer:

They are all FEIT and I did keep the receipts "just in case".:lol::dunno:

T8 replacement were not rebated and still too expensive at $37 for two. Might try the Home DEPOT $9.95 T8 replacement LED but not in a hurry.

IDK what all was in the Amazon reviews, but keep in mind, customer satisfaction and initial cost ratings are not the same as efficiency, light output, overall energy savings and CRI ratings.

Consumer Reports can also be fairly biased. They sometimes praise things for how they seem to the uninformed, not if they're provably better. In the 80's they continually rated Toro walk behind mowers WAY above equivalently priced Snappers because they had more accessories or "features", even though the Snappers outperformed, outlasted and had a much better reliability factor. I worked on both back then. The Toros were a fancified $199.00 mower with all sorts of easily broken doo-dads that had no real benefit to the user as compared to the Snappers.

Again, if you're happy with the Feits for what you paid, that's all that really matters.
