Outlaw, not a bad idea. I have two mats for my bench that are designed for pinning locks, very helpful for keeping all the parts in order!

A huy at my work dropped his 1/4 SO ratchet in the frame of the car at about 2pm, we closed at 5pm and he was still at it. Found out he was there till 6pm and it some how fell in lower rad support and he had to use an air hammer to get the damn thing out.

I found a 9/16" Craftsman combo wrench in the lower radiator support of my '95 Caprice. Old cop car, probably some poor city service schmuck dropped it in there and couldn't find it.

haha this just happen to me on Monday as I took of my license plate to put on the new registration sticker. I take of the two screws and place them on the ground next to my ratcheting screwdriver. When I go to put it back on I can't find the one of the screws. I'm looking everywhere in a 20' radius under the car, in the garage, under my cabinet, compressor, check to see if it rolled out the door. For the life of me I can't figure out where the damn thing went. I must have spent a good 5-10 mintues looking. So I go into my hardware cabinet and pull out a new screw to use and when I pick up the screwdriver the magnet had the original screw stuck to the shaft. I don't know how I missed it before, I picked up the screwdriver looking for the screw before and didn't notice it.

Personal favorite of mine, Manual Window Crank clips. Nothing is more fun then watching a new tech remove a manual window crank and you just hear ... PING... as it shoots off to god knows where. You hear a few faint tings and tangs and its gone forever. once watched a tech search for 20 minutes before i let him in of the bag of 100 or so we keep in the shop for situations like this.

After a while you learn to put your hand over the top of them to atleast try and control the blast.

Whenever I drop something in a bad spot, it seems to happen in slow motion. Dropped a 3/8 t45 socket down the rear cover on a navistar 6.0L. Heard three dinks as it went all the way to the bottom. Luckly one of the other techs had a flexible magnet that reached all the way to the bottom.

My truck tends to eat 12 mm sockets. I kept buying a new one from Sears everytime, until last time. I picked an SK 12 mm for a quarter from the pawn shop. Guess what? I now have a socket that won't disappear, but it doesn't match the rest. :eyecrazy:

I have a good one.....

I was working on a flap drive system on a Dehav Dash-8 aircraft one day at work and I was on a large wing stand that is placed beneath the wings. I was behind the wing working on the wiring in the trailing edge. The wing stand allows you really comfortable access to the leading edges, trailing edges, flaps, etc and you're about 7-8 feet up off the floor when you're on it. It's a high wing designed aircraft so it's a must when doing any large maintenance checks on this aircraft.

Anyways, a couple guys were on a man-lift working on the inboard side of the #2 engine......about 7-8 feet off the ground. They were towards the front of the engine, close to the rear of the prop...nowhere near me really, when one of them dropped a socket. I heard them fussing about trying to find this socket and it was getting pretty funny listening to them trying to locate it.

So about 5 min later, I looked down near me and I saw a shallow socket near my feet. I was so far away from them and also at about the same height as them that I just assumed it was someone else s so I picked it up and put it in my pocket. Then I heard one of them mention the size they were missing when someone else came over to help them out and it was the same size.

I thought to myself....."it couldn't be, they dropped it straight down 7 feet to the hangar floor nowhere near me". I hollered down to them......."was it a 7/16" Snap On shallow?" They said "yes". I said "well I found it up here".......

They looked at me with what I would describe as rage. I think they were assuming I was playing some kind of cruel trick on them because if you looked at the situation, it was damn near impossible for this socket to end up where it was. I gave it right back to them but honestly I don't think those two guys ever believed me. They were looking at me with those accusatory eyes and I really don't think they believe me to this day.
