Tonight I took care of something I've been dreading, went through every tool in my truck tool bag after it was exposed to water. Oh, last month I pulled out everything that looked rusty and took care of it immediately, sprayed Water Displacement formula 40 over the rest and left it under a 60W reading lamp. Today I finally went through it.
Results from best to worst-
I had already cleaned up the brake tool and the worse Vise Grip. Below is a picture of everything else that rusted, everything good, and the bag.
So the circumstances. My Dakota had three rain leaks. One was the High Mount Rear Brake Light. Second was the gasket split at the bottom of each rear vent (a.k.a. rear side window). The other, harder to figure out, was the rear cab vents behind the rear passenger seats. They had been knocked inward by a bent bed and water was getting in there bad. The Cman bag soaked up water from the bottom on the carpet.
Interestingly the SK deeps were the only thing still wet when I pulled them out of the bottom, and they had zero rust.
I had fixed 2 leaks and thought I nailed it, put my tools back in then the rear vents got me with the worst flooding ever.
So my question, is there a good tool bag that is waterproof? The Cman bag was pretty much perfect in size, lots of internal and a few external pockets, it has held up for years. It is not one of their cheap 2/$12 promo bags. It has a nylon canvas type outer and a smooth plastic inside that could fool one into thinking it might be waterproof. But it sucked up water from the carpet it was sitting on.
Pictures in order- rusted tools, the bag, cleaned rusty tools, all the rest of the tools (including already cleaned up brake tool and vice grips).
