I've used peg board (cannot do large items) and Garage Grid hangers (take up a lot of space). Both also leave items out in the open to get dusty or catch as you walk by. Using 3/4" plywood sides, top, bottom (but not back). I built 12" d x 48" w x 72" h cabinets with 1x4s across the back to mount to the wall. Then a piece of 1/4" plywood that fits in the cabinet and secured to the 1x4s as the back. But before actually installed the 1/4" back I lay it on horses and layout all the things I want to store in the cabinet. Tools, battery charger, funnels, everything (spare tire in one), and make holders for each and move things around to maximize the storage. Then once all the holders are created and fastened on the 1/4" plywood it goes into the cabinet and things are stored. I also make doors out of Melamine with a 1x4 frame. Nothing gets dusty now, smooth, shiny doors (no handles) so I can walk by and not get caught, and the doors brighten up the garage. I have five of these along one wall and I now store in them what took up three walls before. Cost about $50 each. If you want a Word document with pictures and more details, PM me your email address.
