What would you guys recommend for hanging tools or whatever on a garage that has been dry walled? Obviously using the studs but what has your experience been with using other methods to maximize space?

Slatwall, pegboard, geartrack, or French cleats are a few things that come to mind. What types of things are you looking to hang?

I just use nails, sometimes screws. also I make long shaker hangers out of 1x4 and put shaker pegs every 6" and mount those in the garage for hats and coats...slatwall is too expensive for me. I like French cleats and have done that in my woodshop but not the garage. I had pegboard but life's too short for messing around with the stupid hooks. the box stores have aisles full of organization hooks as well, from the cheap rubber coated screw in hooks to fancier hanging bike racks...

I've used peg board (cannot do large items) and Garage Grid hangers (take up a lot of space). Both also leave items out in the open to get dusty or catch as you walk by. Using 3/4" plywood sides, top, bottom (but not back). I built 12" d x 48" w x 72" h cabinets with 1x4s across the back to mount to the wall. Then a piece of 1/4" plywood that fits in the cabinet and secured to the 1x4s as the back. But before actually installed the 1/4" back I lay it on horses and layout all the things I want to store in the cabinet. Tools, battery charger, funnels, everything (spare tire in one), and make holders for each and move things around to maximize the storage. Then once all the holders are created and fastened on the 1/4" plywood it goes into the cabinet and things are stored. I also make doors out of Melamine with a 1x4 frame. Nothing gets dusty now, smooth, shiny doors (no handles) so I can walk by and not get caught, and the doors brighten up the garage. I have five of these along one wall and I now store in them what took up three walls before. Cost about $50 each. If you want a Word document with pictures and more details, PM me your email address.

I screw painted 1x to the studs in horizontal runs and then attach whatever nails, screws, clips or brackets make sense for whatever I'm hanging into that.
